5 best horses rdr2 online in 2024 [horses ultimate list]

Arabian Horses are the best horses

Horses in Red Dead Redemption 2 are put it into categories to tell you what they’re good at. Those categories are riding, draft, work, race and war. They also have handling styles, to give you an idea of how they ride. Those styles are standard, race and heavy.

Arabian horses, however, have their own category — “superior” — and their own handling style, “elite.” You want an Arabian horse, but the path to acquiring one isn’t easy.

The best horse in the game is the rose gray bay Arabian horse, which is rated 7 in health and stamina, and 6 in speed and acceleration. Health and stamina can be increased by three points through horse bonding, and speed and acceleration can be increased by two points with stirrups, so this horse will reach 10 health and stamina and 8 in speed and acceleration once you have kitted it out and fully bonded with it.

The trouble is that it doesn’t show up for purchase in a stable until very late in the game — you can only buy it in the epilogue, after Chapter 6. And it will cost you $1,250 once it’s available. You can buy a black Arabian horse with a 6 in every stat in Chapter 4 for $1,050, but that’s still a big investment in time and money.

Focus on the white Arabian horse if you want the best upgrade possible as quickly as possible.

Rare Breeds

Unlike the other wild horse breeds, the Rare Breeds, the Tiger Striped Bay Wild Mustang and the White Wild Arabian, only spawn in very specific locations. Their spawn rate is also considerably lower than regular wild horse breeds, so you may have to come back to their locations multiple times.

Tiger Striped Bay Wild Mustang

The Tiger Striped Bay Wild Mustang can only be caught in during the late game, as its only spawn location is found in the southern part of the map. The horse can be found in the open area directly to the west of the Rio del Lobo Rock.

This area is also the same one where one of the Legendary Animals can be found.

The Tiger Striped Bay Wild Mustang is an excellent horse, but there’s no comparison with the White Wild Arabian, especially since this rare Mustang can be obtained only when the main campaign is almost over.

White Wild Arabian

The White Wild Arabian is, without a doubt, the best horse race of Red Dead Redemption 2 and, as such, it requires some effort to catch.

This horse breed spawns near Lake Isabella, near the northwestern shore of the lake. As the area features snow, it’s sometimes difficult to spot the horse.

The best thing about the White Wild Arabian horse is not only its speed, the fastest among all wild horses, but also the fact that you can capture the animal as soon as Chapter 2 begins, as the area can be accessed without any particular issue.

Few-Spotted Appaloosa

The Few-Spotted Appaloosa is one of the rarest horses in the game and it will be time consuming to attempt to come across one.

You can find the horse at any one of the Appaloosa spawn locations and it will randomly spawn among the Appaloosa herds. You can refer to the locations shown below on map where you can find these herds.

If you go to New Hanover and check right below the letter “H” of “NEW HANOVER”, you may come across one NPC campsite. You can also find the horse there. Some other locations include the Lavender fields near Hanging Dog Ranch, all the way to the west near Little Creek River; also just north of Cattail pond in Grizzlies West, near the Wapiti Reservation just below the letter “R” of “AMBARINO”; and of course the NPC camp mentioned earlier at New Hanover near the oilfield.

If you are in the epilogue you can also find a herd of Appaloosa at Cholla Springs at New Austin. The herd is above the letter “A” of the word “NEW AUSTIN” and just below the letters “LLA” of “CHOLLA SPRINGS”.

Perlino Andalusian

A Perlino Andalusian can be found north of Annesburg by the Brandywine Drop water fall. The horse will be just below the letter “R” of “ROANOKE RIDGE” beside the Roanoke Valley.

Red Chestnut Arabian

This horse is easily found to the west of Owanjila. It will be in the open area near the Pagan Ritual site where you get to inspect the bones.

Warped Brindle Arabian

The Warped Brindle Arabian is found in the mountains just above Wapiti Indian reservation. You need to go above the mountains at the reservations and the horse will be there. Be careful when you are scaling the mountain as well as when breaking the horse, as you might fall down easily by slipping off the mountain. For your reference, the location of the horse is slightly above the name “WAPITI INDIAN RESERVATION” on the map.

Missouri Fox Trotter

The Missouri Fox Trotter balances the best base speed of all the horse breeds with solid Health and high Stamina. As a mix between the Race and Work breeds, the Missouri Fox Trotter comes highly recommended for those who want all of the perks and benefits of a fast riding horse with resilient Stamina. Like the Turkoman breed, all of the Missouri Fox Trotter coats have the same exact stats, which are reflected below along with a brief breakdown of where you can purchase them and when.

Where to find the best horse

You will find Lake Isabella in the western Grizzlies in the state of Ambarino — the snowy, mountainous area in the far northwest corner of Red Dead Redemption 2’s map. The white Arabian horse hangs out on the western bank of the lake.

Manually save your game before entering the area. The horse will bolt if you fail to tame it, and it can be hard to find again.

The white Arabian is flighty and nervous, but you can break it the same way as any other wild horse if you’re patient. Approach it very slowly, so you can hit the square/X button to calm it as soon as it starts to get anxious. The horse will try to buck you off once you mount it, so be ready to hit the left analog stick to further calm it and stay on. Then it’s just a matter of putting your saddle on it.

While you’re in the area, consider catching the legendary fish in the lake or hunting the legendary white bison on the eastern shore. The first clue to track the bison is on the island in the middle of the lake.

How to break in the White Arabian in Red Dead Redemption 2

Keep doing this and edging closer until you’re within range to pet the White Arabian. When this happens, do this a couple of times and then press Triangle/Y to mount the horse. Unfortunately, it’s not over just yet. The horse will naturally start bucking and attempt to throw you off. What you want to do is hold the left analogue stick in the opposite direction to which the White Arabian is attempting to pull you. Basically, resist like you would when you’re trying to catch a fish, but keep hammering Square/X to calm it as you do this.

Eventually, the bar in the bottom right will hit rock bottom and you’ll have broken in the White Arabian. Congratulations, you now own the best horse in the game. All you have to do now is go to your current horse, remove its saddle by holding Right on the D-Pad and place it on your new steed. Now you can bond with it and customize its kit to make it even faster.

Make sure to whistle on your way out of the area so that your previous horse follows you. This makes sure it won’t be left in the cold and you can stable it just in case you lose this one. As of writing this article, we do not know of any other appearance of the White Arabian in-game, meaning you better carry some Horse Revivers to ensure it doesn’t shuffle off this mortal coil, or you won’t get anything quite as good ever again. Safe travels!

Why the white Arabian horse is so good

You can tame the white Arabian horse as early as Chapter 2, and it has the same 6 in speed and acceleration as the other Arabian horses, but only a 6 in health and stamina. This means it will have an 8 in every stat once you’ve fully bonded with it, which is a big improvement over every other horse you can buy during the early chapters of the game.

In contrast, the $450 Dutch Warmblood has 5 health and 6 stamina, but only 4 speed and 3 acceleration. The white Arabian also blows away the Ardennes War Horse you might have gotten for pre-ordering the game, and the Dappled Black Thoroughbred you got if you bought the Special Edition or the Ultimate Edition.

Once I was fully bonded with the white Arabian horse, I was able to complete the sixth horseman challenge, which requires you to ride from Strawberry to Saint Denis in nine minutes without touching water. My plan is to ride the white Arabian until I can get the rose gray bay Arabian late in the game.

Arabian

Arabian breed horses have some of the best stats overall. There are three coat types in total, each with their own unique statistics: White, Black, and Rose Grey Bay.

White-Maned Arabian

The White-Maned Arabian can only be found in the wild, which makes it possible to find relatively early on. This snow-white beauty wanders around the edges of Lake Isabella. It’s quite difficult to tame, so you’re going to need to be persistent in following it around and calming it down enough before you can approach it.

Compared to other Arabian horses, it has the lowest base Health and Stamina stats—though, it’s still much higher than any of the more standard horse breeds. A worthy compromise for a fantastic horse you can catch and tame so early in the game. Just watch out for the wolves who hang out nearby.

Speed Acceleration Handling Type
6 6 Elite Superior

Black Arabian

The Black-Maned Arabian horse can be purchased at the Saint Denis Stable during Chapter 4. It has most the well-rounded stats of the Arabian Horses with decent Health and Stamina.

Speed Acceleration Handling Type
6 6 Elite Superior

Rose Grey Bay-Maned Arabian

The Rose Grey Bay-Maned Arabian can only be bought at the Blackwater Stable during the Epilogue section of the game. It has the highest Health and Stamina of the three Arabian horses.

Speed Acceleration Handling Type
6 6 Elite Superior

Turkoman

Turkoman breed horses make up their lacking acceleration with solid speed, average handling, and a high Health pool. As a cross between War and Racing breeds, they’re well worth owning for riders who want a trusty steed who can withstand damage without sacrificing speed. All three Turkoman breeds have the same exact stats, which are reflected below along with a brief breakdown of where you can purchase them and when.

Speed Acceleration Handling Type
6 5 Standard Race / War
  • Gold Turkoman: Sold at the Saint Denis Stable during Chapter 4.
  • Dark Bay Turkoman: Sold at the Blackwater Stable during the Epilogue.
  • Silver Turkoman: Sold at the Tumbleweed Stable during the Epilogue.

Where to find the White Arabian in Red Dead Redemption 2

The White Arabian is an elusive creature that hides out in the tundra of the West Grizzlies. Its white coat masks the horse amidst snowstorms, making it particularly hard to spot. Put on your best Winter Gear to mitigate the weather so you have enough stamina and health to tame it, and head to the western bank of Lake Isabella, as marked on the map above.

I’d recommend you dismount a good distance away from the spot marked there so that your current, inferior horse doesn’t scare the White Arabian and make it bolt. At this point, you should save your game manually to make sure you have an instance to return to if you mess up. It’s easy to put a foot wrong and lose the horse, and it’s not guaranteed to return if you frighten it off. To my knowledge, you only get one shot, so you want to be very prepared before you attempt this.

Once you’re ready, crouch and start moving towards the area, using Eagle Eye (L3 + R3) when possible to spot heat signatures from afar. Once you find it, you want to slowly get in range of the White Arabian until you can hold L2/LT to focus on it. Now that you’re in focus, you’ll notice the calm bar in the bottom right corner, which you want to keep as full as possible. Basically, hammer Square/X to make sure the horse is ok with you approaching it.

Every time you see the calm bar deplete (this will usually coincide with the horse making noise and moving erratically,) you want to stop dead in your tracks and keep calming it until everything returns to normal.

Why the horse is worth the effort

The fully bonded white Arabian can run long distances at its impressive top speed, and it feels almost like a cheat code as you crisscross the map while doing missions or challenges. A horse this fast is a big upgrade during the early hours of the game.

Keep in mind that there seems to be only one white Arabian horse in the game, and horses can die — permanently — if you’re not careful. Make sure to keep some Horse Reviver on hand at all times in case your horse is severely injured, and manually save your game frequently so you can reload to a recent save if there’s some kind of catastrophe.

Your journeys between missions and points of interest will be dramatically shorter than they would be on an inferior horse. Treat the white Arabian well, feed it frequently and brush its coat so its stamina core doesn’t degrade. Pursuers won’t be able to catch you, and targets won’t be able to outrun you. Everything about your early- to mid-game experience will be better.

Turkoman

Turkoman location revealed.

The Turkoman is a beautiful mix of race horse and war horse that gives the Arabian a run for its money. Known for high speed and health, Turkomans can easily become impatient and run away from new owners. Make sure to build up a good relationship with yours right away.

  • High speed and health
  • Priced under $1,000
  • Multi class
  • Great for high speed shoot outs

  • Handling: 40

Regular Breeds

Wild American Paint

The Wild American Paint can be found in the southern part of the map, in an area to the south of Tumbleweed and to the north of the gap between the “N” and “E” in New Austin, to the north of the road. This area of the map can only be accessed late in the game.

The Wild American Standardbred can be found more often in an area to the north of Valley View, right by the river.

Wild Appaloosa

The Wild Appaloosa is usually found to the west of Donner Falls, which are located to the north of the Bacchus Bridge. The Appaloosa is actually a very good horse race in Red Dead Redemption 2, so you may want to bond with one to increase its stats and get yourself a very trusty steed.

Wild Hungarian Halfbred

The Wild Hungarian Halfbred can be found near the city of Blackwater. Specifically, this wild horse breed spawns more often in an open area to the southeast of Fort Riggs, right past the river. The best area to find this horse breed is by a cliff.

Wild Kentucky Saddler

The Wild Kentucky Saddler spawns more often in the open area found to the east of Manzanita Post. If there are no horses around when you reach the area, simply camp, make some time pass and try again.

Wild Morgan

The Wild Morgan can be found more often in the same area where the Wild American Standardbred spawns, to the north of Valley View, near the river past the road.

Wild Mustang

The Wild Mustang can be found in an area located in the gap between the “L” and “A” in The Heartlands on the map, to the east of Oil Derrick. There’s another breed that spawns more often in the area, so make sure to study the horse before attempting to catch it.

Wild Nokota

Like the Wild American Paint, the Wild Nokota can only be caught late in the game, as it’s best spawning location is found in the New Austin area. The Wild Nokota can be found to the south of Armadillo, in the open area found in the gap between the “S” and “T” in New Austin on the map.

Wild Tennessee Walker

The Wild Tennessee Walker can be found more often in an area located to the east of Oil Derrick, in the gap between the “L” and “A” in The Heartlands on the map.

How to unlock the stables in Red Dead Redemption 2

First off, you have to make sure you’ve unlocked the stables. This is early on in the game, a reward for completing the Chapter 2 mission “Exit, Pursued By A Bruised Ego,” where you hunt a Legendary Bear with Hosea.

Once you’ve done that, you’ll find out that the best horse breed in Red Dead Redemption 2 you can purchase is an Arabian. They are always the most expensive when you’re shopping at a stable, averaging around $1000, and offer excellent speed, acceleration and handling.

However, there is also a wild variant of this breed, the White Arabian, that has better overall stats. Fortunately, you can acquire this horse for free, as long as you’re ok with going through the arduous process to tame it. But that’s what we’re here for!

General Tips

Shortly after the game’s first Chapter, players are able to not only improve their current horse’s stats by bonding with it, but also to purchase new horses in Stables. There are a lot of different breeds in the game, so finding the best possible horse is a fun, but money and time-consuming, activity.

New horses in Red Dead Redemption 2 can be obtained in a variety of ways. Not counting purchasing them in Stables, it’s possible to steal them or catch wild ones that can be found roaming all over the map. Stealing horses is not really advisable, as you also need to “take care of” any witnesses to prevent getting reported to the law and increasing your bounty. So if you don’t have much money, catching wild horses is the way to go if you’re looking for a better steed to accompany you through the game.

In total there are 15 different wild horse breeds in Red Dead Redemption 2, six of them being rare breeds. The regular breeds can be encountered in multiple locations, but there are areas where the spawn rate is higher and so it’s easier to come across them. The six rare breeds, which are among the best horses in the game, can only be encountered in specific locations. They also have a very low spawn chance, so you may need to return to the area more than once to make them appear.

Catching and taming wild horses in rather straightforward in Red Dead Redemption 2. Once you find a horse you like in the wild, take out the lasso and use it on the horse while in range. If the horse is trying to get away, mount your current horse.

Once a wild horse has been lassoed, you need to get close to it. Keep L2/LT pressed to keep the horse lassoed, and then use the Calm option when it becomes available. Continue using it until the horse has visibly calmed down to mount it.

Once a wild horse has been mounted, it’s time to break it. To do it, you need to move the left stick in the opposite direction of the horse’s movement. After a short while, the game will notify you of your success. You can also move the saddle to the new horse if you want to take it your main horse.
