Mortal Kombat 12 Story

If we talk about the story of the game, the developers would be continuing on the pre-established story of the Mortal Kombat series instead of a new one.

In the previous games, after Liu Kang defeated Kronika, he ultimately became a God of Time, Thunder and fire. Eventually, he gains Raiden’s powers and further uses them as his own. Liu Kang and Kitana Kahn have the duty to protect Earth and the Outerworld.

However, on an unfortunate day, Shang Tsung returns kills Ermac, and steals the soul of Goro. Shang Tsung’s objective is to use his soul to revive Onaga, the Dragon King, who was destroyed by Raiden, Shang Tsung, and Quan Chi many years ago, in which he becomes successful.

As Onaga has become more powerful than ever, with the souls of Shinnok, Kronika & Goro, he brings back many of his deceased allies. He and his army are about to rule all the realms by conquering them one by one.

Though the original story of Mortal Kombat 12 is not out, it is possible that in the upcoming game, you have to fight Onaga and defeat him as soon as possible.

Mortal Kombat 12 Characters List

At this point, it’s impossible to say for certain what characters might be included in Mortal Kombat 12. It all depends on exactly where this new story is going and what implications the ending of Mortal Kombat 11 has on the established timeline. Likewise, if this new game is genuinely set hundreds of years before the first arcade game, it might suggest a wildly different cast of characters.

That being said, when Shang Tsung mocks Lord Liu Kang for being cold blooded – given how he essentially sacrificed his friends to attain the one ending whereby he might save the overall timeline – Liu Kang replies that his friends “are not gone” and will “live again” in his new era. So who knows maybe they will return in some fashion.

For now though, the only characters we can say will be included in MK12 are Lord Liu Kang, God of Fire & Thunder as well as the Great Kung Lao. Will Raiden be in Mortal Kombat 12? It’s hard to say based on the MK11 ending which saw Liu Kang become the god of Thunder. We’ll be sure to keep this list updated as we get more info.

Mortal Kombat 12 Release Date

At the time of writing, there is no official release date for Mortal Kombat 12, since Netherealm has yet to formally announce the game. As we’ve touched on, there’s still a lot of debate as to what the studio is actually working on.

Speaking freely, we think it’s likely that we do see an MK12 reveal in 2022 (in line with the 30th Anniversary celebrations) with an eventual release scheduled for 2023.

Regardless, we know that NeatherRealm usually follows a similar pattern for their release schedules. As the table below shows, we typically see the studio release a new game every two years, and had it not been for the COVID 19 Pandemic and the ongoing Warner Brothers turmoil, they might well have released something by now.

Many fans suspect that Injustice 3 is in an early development stage and primed for NetherRealm coming project release but Jeff Grubb a very famous and influential journalist hints that it might not be the case.

A giant bomb video suggests that the currently uncertain surroundings of Warner Brothers Games may lead to NetherRealm changing its projects. Grubb says that it lines up with reality and based on what he has heard, Mortal Kombat 12 will make the most sense as this is a that will attract money. He says that Mortal Kombat 11 did well and Mortal Kombat 12 will do even better. “It will also be bought and will do well in the market,” says Grubb.

It is suggested that players might not have to use any of the Batman or Superman characters that may have licensing issues if they try to get away with NetherRealm or sell it to someone.

On June 18th, 2020, NetherRealm released the latest job as stated that the studio was looking for a Principal Software Engineer. It was done to drive the next-generation console graphics for the gaming series of the Mortal Kombat and Injustice franchises.

The job listing is also one of the main causes that have led the fans to believe that Mortal Kombat 12 is in the development stage.

Mortal Kombat 12 release date

It’s hard to make any firm suggestions for when Mortal Kombat 12 could release, as it’s difficult to know if production for Injustice 3 was initially the priority for NetherRealm over the past few years.

One would suspect that if NetherRealm was working on Mortal Kombat 12, the best-case scenario is that it might release in the second half of 2022, but more likely, we suspect it will launch in early 2023.

Traditionally NetherRealm has released a new game every two years, which you can see from the below list:

Drahmin

This one is a longshot, considering Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon said that Drahmin is one of his least favorite characters in the series (alongside Hsu Hao) in an issue of Game Informer magazine, but we think the demon from the 5th plane of the Netherrealm deserves another chance.

Much like most of the entries in our Mortal Kombat 12 characters wishlist, Drahmin has a compelling concept; long ago, Drahmin was a sadistic warlord, who died and was exiled to Netherrealm for his crimes; there, he was tortured for 500 years and grew progressively more and more insane until he reemerged as a tormentor with an iron club for a hand and a painted Oni mask the only thing to inhibit his insanity.

That being said, Drahmin’s moveset leaves something to be desired. For starters, he’s slower than many of the other characters in the game and relies heavily on his special moves, which can make him predictable to players who know what they’re doing. To rectify this, it might be helpful to give Drahmin two different fighting styles – one with his rage suppressing mask still on, which would lend him a more calculated and reserved fighting style, and another with his mask off, which would make his fighting style wild and unpredictable.

In terms of appearance, Drahmin needs a facelift from his current Freddy Krueger in a loincloth look. We’d like to see Drahmin’s design focus more on the Oni mask as a central design theme; samurai armor to accompany the Oni mask would make sense considering Drahmin’s former life as a warlord, or even flowing, colorful robes with colors to match the ones on his mask.

21 August 2021 – Many fans would rightly have assumed that the next project after Mortal Kombat 11 would be a new entry in the Injustice series. As we’ve touched on before, that’s partly to do with Netherrealm’s pattern of flipping between each series. However, according to VentureBeat reporter Jeff Grubb that could be about to change.

Speaking on the Giant Bomb podcast, Grubb suggested that the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Warner Brothers Games, and the Merger with Discovery, led to NetherRealm changing projects or potentially abandoning any hope of working on an Injustice 3 project.

“It lines up with the reality and it lines up with what I’ve heard, where Mortal Kombat 12 would make the most sense because that’s a game they know will make money, it will sell well… Mortal Kombat 11 was great, it’s doing well, but if you come out with Mortal Kombat 12 it will also sell and do well,” Grubb said. “At the same time, you don’t have to use any of these Batman or Superman characters that might be tied up in licensing if you try to get rid of NetherRealm or sell it to whoever.”

Mortal Kombat 12 Release Date Speculation

At the time of writing, there is no official confirmed release date for Mortal Kombat 12, but in this article, you’ll find all (if any) information that the developer shared, as well as some speculation from Ginx on when we could see it launch.

NetherRealm has yet to announce the game. It is likely that an MK12 will be revealed in 2023  with a 2024/2025 release date window.

This would fall in line with how NetherRealm releases its games, which are usually on a two-year cycle. The past few years have been challenging in terms of the development cycle at many studios thanks to COVID-19 and other factors, but now that some form of normality has been restored, we expect a release date announcement very soon. 

Mortal Kombat 12 Leaks & News

NetherRealm senior production manager Jonathan Andersen may have dropped a major hint that the studio’s next game could be Mortal Kombat 12. Andersen tweeted the image below in January 2022, then deleted it promptly.

Some fans suspect that this was a planned leak to tease us with a bait-and-switch while they work on the game or even something else. Regardless, NetherRealm has refused to comment on the post, so we’ll have to wait for the studio to make an official announcement before we know more.

Mortal Kombat 12 Story

Mortal Kombat 11 Aftermath, the game’s campaign DLC that was released a year after its initial release, is the only way for fans to get a feel for what to expect in Mortal Kombat 12. The «bad» ending is obtained by choosing to play as Shang Tsung, whereas the «good» ending, in which Shang Tsung is defeated, is obtained by choosing to support Lord Liu Kang. Although it hasn’t been confirmed, many people anticipate that the «good ending» will continue as the perceived canon.

After defeating Shang Tsung, Lord Liu Kang is then able to use Kronika’s Hourglass to alter history, which he refers to as his «New Era» and in which he hopes none of his friends will be «lost.»

If this means that the timeline has been reset, Mortal Kombat 12 might usher in a completely new period of Mortal Kombat. And possibly take place hundreds of years before the events of the first Mortal Kombat arcade game.

So to conclude what we suspect, the story for Mortal Kombat 12 will see new faces appear and old faces return, with a blank sleight (the reset timeline) for them to battle it out in epic new battles.

Sareena

Sareena, who first appeared in 1997’s Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and first became a playable character in 2003’s Mortal Kombat: Tournament Edition, is a former assassin for Quan Chi who broke free of his control thanks to Bi-Han, AKA Noob Saibot.

Her affiliation to both Noob and Quan Chi is a story thread worth expanding upon in Mortal Kombat 12, as is her wardrobe, which was a bit too skimpy and reflective of the times since she last appeared as a playable character.

Interestingly enough, Sareena also appears in the ending for Kabal in MKXI, perhaps hinting that her return could be something planned for the series’ next installment.

Human Smoke

We’d be remiss if we had Tremor on our Mortal Kombat 12 characters wishlist and not Smoke – more specifically, human Smoke.

Smoke is an OG character who first appeared as an unplayable secret character in Mortal Kombat II, a gray palette-swap of Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Reptile whose body perpetually emits puffs of smoke. He reappeared in Mortal Kombat 3 in a cyborg body as one of the Lin Kieu’s top assassins.

Smoke would then make his first appearance in 19 years in 2011’s Mortal Kombat, in human form once again, along with an intriguing twist revealed when you beat the game with him: he was kidnapped as a child by a cult who intended to sacrifice him to a demon. In the act of the sacrifice however, he transformed into an enenra, a demon composed entirely of smoke and vapor, killed his captors and then returned to his mortal form, completely oblivious of what he’d done.

Unfortunately, after such a cool twist, human/enenra Smoke hasn’t been a playable character in a Mortal Kombat game since, something that we hope changes in Mortal Kombat 12 so we can further explore his motivations.

Mortal Kombat 12 Storyline | MK12 Storyline

Mortal Kombat 12 has a storyline that will begin from the end of Mortal Kombat 11: Aftermath DLC. If you wish to choose Shang Tsung, you may face a bad ending. But on the other hand, if you wish to opt for Liu Kang, you will get a good ending. The latter is known to be a canon. This is the story expansion of Mortal Kombat 11. The two different endings will be much more fun depending on who you wish to fight Kronika as.

In the ending, where you choose Liu Kang (now Fire God), the character will use the hourglass to create a new history before dwindling into the black. It is speculated that we may get to see the Wu Shi Academy. This is where the characters like Kung Lao and Liu King received their training to become Shaolin Monks.

He also greets the young Kung Lao who is chosen as the new champion by Liu Kang. He then elaborates that they have to begin their “training”. When Kung Lao will ask what he needs for his training, Liu Kang will not speak and will only smirk.

The second path can lead to a direct sequel which will take up from Shang Tsung’s ending. Here Shang Tsung defeats Liu Kang and becomes a God determined to win all the realms. It’s the darkest road that the franchise could go for, specifically with Liu Kang not in the picture and Raiden and Fujin under Shang’s mind control. This would mean that those who survived the Aftermath and the Tsung’s takeover will unite and defeat Shang Tsung together. And try to save the Earthrealm and Outworld. The ending can be explored more similarly to the last version i.e. in Aftermath. The crucial thing to pay attention to is that the other realms have not been explored fully yet. We can finally get to chance to explore these realms in the spotlight as well. This also suggests that there can be new and familiar faces that will become playable again.

Mortal Kombat 12 is most likely to get a whole new era which is potentially decades before most of the previous MK games have seen so far.

A fan of the Mortal Kombat video game series would be thrilled to know that the 12 edition of this series is rumored to have a character selection screen reminiscent of 2006’s Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. Though there are some conflicting reports about what developer NetherRealm is working on next. Some of the common rumors point towards that the coming installment is going to be the priority of the firm over other projects.

There are various speculations about which far-reaching roster of playable warriors will be coming back in Mortal Kombat 12. It is highlighted more since the MK 11: Aftermath DLC dramatically shook up the series status quo. Some fans hope that they will get to see the classic fighter of the MK series as hidden unlockable characters in the coming new edition. Many think that Mortal Kombat 12 can be a game of the series with a new direction. They may introduce some new Mortal Kombat legends canon as they did with Smoke and Ermac.

Dame, Falconstein, a Twitter user and Twitch streamer hopes to see a huge roster of characters that spans the entire Mortal Kombat Franchise. Many fans are discussing that whether or not newcomers will welcome having to learn more than 78 move sets. Some think that some players might stop harassing NetherRealm to incorporate the famous unused character in Mortal Kombat 12.

Many commenters have been comparing the custom Mortal Kombat 12 character selection of Dame Falconstein to the one in Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. It is famous for the inclusion of virtually every playable combatant. These have been featured in one of the Mortal Komat games before. Some of them are joke characters like Meat and Mokap. This was the second last entry of the series before the developer rebooted MK in 2011. This was the only game that was released between the 2008 crossover Mortal Kombat VS DC Universe.

The franchise of Mortal Kombat has released many memorable characters to gain the attention of the audience over the years. These icons are Liu Kang, Scorpion, Cassie Cage, and some guest appearances too like Rambo and Spawn. A roster that will have each one of these which would easily shorten the already gargantuan Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. NetherRealm this time is going to be more careful while choosing who makes it to the Mortal Kombat 12, specifically given the Earthrealm which was shattering in the last game.

August 2, 2022 — No MK12 News from EVO

IGN had previously tweeted: “The developers behind Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Tekken and Guilty Gear are all expected to make announcements during Evo 2022.”

But it turns out that’s not actually the case, at least based on a few quote tweets from NetherRealm’s Ed Boon, who poured cold water on any MK12 announcements, suggesting instead that it was time “for Street Fighter and other great fighting games to be in the sun”.

Ah well, guess there’s always The Game Awards in a few months’ time…

July 4, 2022 — EVO Coming soon

The Evolution Championship Series (EVO) for 2022 is now a month away, starting on August 5 and lasting until August 7.

Could we finally get some big news from NetherRealm at the event. We sure hope so!

June 21, 2022 — Johnny Cage actor teasing next MK game?

The actor for Johnny Cage might be hinting at something going on with Mortal Kombat in a new twitter video released earlier today.

Andrew Bowen, who portrayed Cage in Mortal Kombat X and Mortal Kombat 11, has tweeted a video of himself at the Warner Bros. Studio lot.

What’s even more intriguing is that the background music appears to be from 1988 martial arts movie Bloodsport, which directly inspired the original pitch for Mortal Kombat.

If that wasn’t a big enough clue that something fishy is going on, Bowen swiftly deleted the tweet once it caught fire. We wonder why… (you can watch the video clip below courtesy of another account who grabbed it before it was pulled.

June 2, 2022 — Summer Game Fest Is Next Week

Don’t forget that the third Summer Game Fest takes place on June 9, and promises to showcase “what’s next in gaming with huge new game announcements, world premieres, special guests, and much more”.

It’s also worth noting that the show’s creator Geoff Keighley has let fans know that the show will be “primarily focused” on already announced games. But this isn’t to say it won’t have some new game announcements. Plus with Warner Bros confirmed to be part of Summer Game Fest, it sure would be a good time to announce what NetherRealm is working on. Could it be a new Mortal Kombat? One can only hope.
