Non-MCU Marvel movies and shows: is Spider-Man in the MCU?

The simple answer is only Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far From Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home are in the MCU. Spider-Man-centric properties such as Venom or the upcoming Kraven are part of Sony’s Spider-Man universe and should be treated as a separate entity, even if there is some occasional crossover.

Now we’re getting to the confusing bit: the multiverse. Thanks to Spider-Man: No Way Home, we have had various Spider-Man villains from through the multiverse in the MCU. To fully understand everyone’s motives and intentions in No Way Home, you need to have watched a fair few older Spider-Man movies.

These take place on three alternate timelines: one where Tobey Maguire is Spider-Man, another where Andrew Garfield is Spidey, and a third where Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock becomes the villain Venom. For a full deep dive into watching these movies, then check out our guide to how to watch the Spider-Man movies in order.

Long story, short, however — Tom Holland’s Spider-Man currently exists in the MCU, with the other Sony Spider-Man movies existing (broadly speaking) in the multiverse. Don’t expect them to appear again into the main Marvel universe anytime soon, though.

You might also be wondering about Across the Spider-Verse. Technically, that also exists as part of the wider multiverse (indeed, No Way Home was referenced in the Spider-Verse sequel), but doesn’t have to be watched in any order other than within the framework of its own trilogy. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has just been added to Disney Plus, too, for those looking to jump into one of Peter Parker’s most tragic cinematic adventures.

What’s the Best Way to Watch the MCU: Chronological Order or Release Order?

The cast of “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2” (Marvel Studios)

While the overall story makes sense either way, if it’s your first time in the MCU, you should probably start by watching all the movies in order of release date. Not only is that the order in which the films were made, but you can also chart the evolution and refinement of MCU storytelling as Marvel Studios worked out the kinks and perfected how to make a Marvel movie.

But if you’ve seen most or all of the Marvel movies, watching them in chronological order is a fun experience. It doesn’t change any of the story, and it’s definitely weird to watch “Captain Marvel” so early and then wait 20 movies for Brie Larson’s character to ever be mentioned again. But it allows you to appreciate how well Marvel retrofitted its prequel movies into the existing timeline.

When the Marvel Disney+ Shows Take Place in the MCU Timeline

Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany in “WandaVision” (Marvel Studios)

WandaVision

The first Marvel Disney+ show takes place three weeks after the events of “Avengers: Endgame” and is nestled between “Endgame” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home.”

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

“The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” takes place six months after the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” but before the events of “Spider-Man: Far From Home.”

Loki

“Loki” begins in the immediate wake of “Avengers: Endgame,” but it’s unclear when the MCU-altering events of the Season 1 finale take place. Season 2 of the series picks up immediately after the Season 1 finale, so the whole show is taking place around roughly the same point in the timeline.

Hawkeye

“Hawkeye” takes place at Christmastime in 2024, about a year after the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” and concurrent with the events of “Spider-Man: No Way Home.”

Moon Knight

A specific timeline date for “Moon Knight” hasn’t been revealed other than the fact that it takes place after the events of “Avengers: Endgame.”

Ms. Marvel

The teen-skewing “Ms. Marvel” clearly takes place after the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” and it seems like some significant time has passed since the world was saved.

She-Hulk

“She-Hulk” takes place an indeterminate period of time after the events of “Avengers: Endgame.”

Secret Invasion

“Secret Invasion” takes place after the events of “She-Hulk” and before the events of “The Marvels.”

Marvel Movies in Chronological Order

Robert Downey Jr. in “Iron Man” (Marvel Studios)

Most of the Marvel movies take place one right after the other, but others chronicle events that occur concurrently with events from other films. For instance, the events of “Thor: Ragnarok” take place around the same time as the events of “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” with both films leading up to “Avengers: Infinity War.”

The MCU story is divided up into three phases that make up The Infinity Saga, a story that begins with “Iron Man” and ends with “Avengers: Endgame.”

Phase Four began with the Disney+ series “WandaVision” and also includes “Black Widow” and “Shang-Chi” and concluded with “Wakanda Forever.” Phase Five began with “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.”

Here’s how to watch the MCU movies in chronological order of events:

  • Captain America: The First Avenger

How to watch the Marvel movies in order on Disney Plus

If you’re like us, you might have assumed watching the Marvel movies and shows in order on Disney Plus would be easy. Not quite.

The vast majority of the Marvel movies are available on Disney Plus, but not everything. Currently, only Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Incredible Hulk are not available to stream on Disney Plus in the US. Even so, Disney Plus is by far the easiest way to watch the MCU in order. Let’s dive into the list.

  • Iron Man
  • Thor
  • Iron Man 2
  • Captain America: The First Avenger
  • The Avengers
  • Iron Man 3
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  • Thor: The Dark World
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron
  • Ant-Man
  • Captain America: Civil War
  • Doctor Strange
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
  • Thor: Ragnarok
  • Black Panther
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • Captain Marvel
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp
  • Avengers: Endgame
  • Spider-Man: Far From Home
  • WandaVision
  • The Falcon and the Winter Soldier
  • Loki
  • Black Widow
  • What If…?
  • Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
  • Eternals
  • Hawkeye
  • Moon Knight
  • Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
  • Ms. Marvel
  • She-Hulk
  • Thor: Love and Thunder
  • Werewolf By Night
  • Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
  • Secret Invasion
  • Guardians of the Galaxy 3
  • Loki season 2
  • Echo
  • The Marvels

Some things to note: You will also not find The Incredible Hulk on Disney Plus. This is because the rights to Hulk belong to Universal. As a bonus, both The Amazing Spider-Man movies are available in the US.

On top of that, The Defenders saga (Daredevil seasons 1-3, Jessica Jones seasons 1-3, Luke Cage seasons 1-2, Iron Fist, and Marvel’s Defenders) are now on Disney Plus, but are separate from the list to avoid any confusion over the ‘main’ MCU movies and shows.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and Guardians of the Galaxy 3 are also now available on Disney Plus after their cinema releases in 2023. The Marvels followed suit in February 2024.

How to watch Marvel movies in order of release

Richard Madden as Ikaris in an embrace with Gemma Chan as Sersi in Eternals. Marvel Studios

If the chronological order sounds a little too confusing, there is also the option to simply watch the Marvel movies in release date order, which also neatly categorises the MCU story into four distinct «phases».

The first three phases make up what is now referred to as the Infinity Saga, beginning with the introduction of the Avengers characters and ending with the time-hopping mega-event that was Avengers: Endgame.

Watching this method will send you on the same journey that millions of Marvel fans all over the world have enjoyed, allowing you to watch first-hand how the MCU grew from a fairly grounded superhero flick to an all-out space opera.

It’s true that watching this way will mean you see some events outside of their in-universe order, i.e. the origin of Captain America or the first meeting between Nick Fury and Captain Marvel, but this doesn’t cause any serious storytelling problems.

In release date order, the MCU begins with 2008’s Iron Man and continues all the way up to 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever with several new movies to be added to that list next year.

Phase One

  • Iron Man (May, 2008)

What’s the best way to watch the Marvel movies in order?

Zoe Saldana as Gamora in Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Marvel Studios

While the choice is yours entirely, we’d recommend just watching in plain ol’ release order – it’s the order in which the films were produced and so, ultimately, the order in which they are best viewed…. at least if you’re an MCU newbie, with post-credits scenes, Easter eggs and so on all making the most sense viewed in this order.

We would advise against using the chronological order if you’re a total newcomer to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While the method sounds appealing in theory, there are several reasons why it could actually hamper your overall experience of the MCU.

First off: you may struggle to remember the background of certain characters. Captain Marvel, for instance, will be introduced in the second film in the list, but won’t be mentioned again until more than 40 screen hours later.

Also, making Captain Marvel your second MCU movie means you miss out on the in-jokes and references established over 17 preceding entries.

However, there is something to be said for ardent Marvel fans revisiting the saga chronologically, as this will give more depth to the backstory of some key characters and brings a new understanding of the MCU timeline (e.g. many don’t realise that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 and 2 are set mere months apart).

What the heck is the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Just in case you finally decided to find out what this “Avengers hoopla” is about, and now you find yourself besieged by a lot of this confusing talk of universes. So let’s explain what the Marvel Cinematic Universe is.

A “universe” in this context is a shared setting / timeline / group of characters that appear in different films, tv shows, comic books, or other media.

You’re all familiar with movie universes—any series of movies are set in the same universe. For example, you understand that the Iron Man character in Iron Man, Iron Man 2, and Iron Man 3 is the same character with the same friends, living on the same earth, in the same time period across all three films.

For the most part, characters in a shared universe are played by the same actors throughout. So Robert Downey Jr. plays Tony Stark / Iron Man throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

But even when a character changes actors, you understand it’s still the same character. For example, between Iron Man and Iron Man 2, the actor playing Rhodey changed from Terrence Howard to Don Cheadle, but he was still the same character, friend to Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark.

Now, if Emma Watson (who played Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter films) showed up in an Iron Man film, you wouldn’t think her character is a witch who went to Hogwarts. That’s because you understand Harry Potter and Iron Man take place in different universes.

The final twist is that some characters are found in multiple universes. For example, in 2002 to 2007, Tobey Maguire played Spider-Man in three films. These films are not a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in theaters today.

Just because something happened to the Spider-Man character in 2002, we don’t expect Tom Holland’s Spider-Man (of the Marvel Cinematic Universe) to remember that or have been impacted by that. Those are different universes. (Likewise, the things that happened to Adam West’s Batman in the 1960s aren’t a part of any of the modern Batman films.)

So the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a collection of movies, tv shows, comic books, and a few other media that all form a cohesive story. The universe is led by Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios.

The main part of the universe is the film series. Characters in those movies appear in each other’s title films, and things that happen in (for example) Captain America: The First Avenger impact the events of Captain Marvel even though the movies share almost no common characters.
