TITANS FIRST BIG EVENT TITLED BEAST WORLD
Titans: Beast World preview cover shown at SDCC 2023. Credit: DC Comics
With the Justice League not around DC Comics has made an effort to elevate the Titans as the premiere superhero team for the DCU. Having Tom Taylor and Nicola Scott as the creative team was a big step in making that a reality. And thus far they have proven the Titans can be a Justice League-level team with their creative run thus far.
Now the Titans are taking another step to prove themselves as they lead their first big event titled “Beast World,” with its prelude taking place in Tales of the Titans #4. Beast World will have its own dedicated mini-series with Taylor and Ivan Reis as the creative team. Additional, for now, the Titans and Nightwing ongoing series will have tie-in issues to the series. We don’t know if other ongoing titles will be involved.
From all the information DC Comics released about “Beast World” it does sound like what you expect from big event. What makes this set-up work better than the current Knight Terrors event is that Taylor and others are actually doing a lot of build up for this event. Specifically, with this being a Beast Boy-led event we’ve already seen hints of why this story is happening in Nightwing, Titans, Action Comics, and Dark Crisis. Having that sort of build gives “Beast World” a sense that it will be a payoff to a story that’s been planned out.

Fans eagerly await this epic confrontation, which guarantees spectacular battles and moments of bravery. As the battle for humanity’s survival against legendary monsters commences, the world remains on the edge of its seat, wondering how the Justice League will measure up against Godzilla and Kong.

When DC Comics Collides with the Monsterverse
The Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong storyline was unveiled at Comic-Con, leaving fans of comics and Kaijus in awe. The story revolves around an invasion of the legendary monsters from the Monsterverse—Godzilla and King Kong—into the DC Comics universe of superheroes. Faced with a rupture in the worlds caused by the actions of the Legion of Doom, the members of the Justice League must confront an unprecedented challenge. In this miniseries, Titans and other legendary monsters are not heroes or villains but rather natural forces striving to restore order. Brian Buccellato, the screenwriter, promises an incredible cast including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Hawkgirl, and Supergirl fighting alongside the heroes of Gotham and Titans. However, Godzilla and Kong will not be the only colossal monsters the Justice League will have to face!

The ‘Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong’ brings together writer Brian Buccellato (The Flash), artist Christian Duce (Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point), and colorist Luis Guerrero. In the exclusive art from Duce, even Superman looks tiny compared to Godzilla. Check out the image below.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Lee said, “When you have a story where the characters are this big, there’s a size disparity.” Lee added, “From an artist’s point of view, it is a challenge to compose the shots in a way that you’re able to show the drama through the faces while at the same time clearly conveying what’s happening in terms of the action. But Christian just brought it home and has done a fabulous job.”
Superman vs. Godzilla – Who Would Win?

The ultimate battle between Superman and Godzilla shakes the very foundations of the Earth. The skies darken as the two colossal forces collide, their immense powers on full display. Buildings crumble, and the ground trembles with each thunderous blow exchanged. In the midst of the chaos, Superman’s unwavering determination and sense of justice shine through. With strategic brilliance, he outmaneuvers the mighty Godzilla, landing precise blows that gradually weaken the seemingly invulnerable behemoth. As the battle reaches its climax, Superman musters all his strength, delivering a decisive blow that leaves Godzilla subdued but not defeated. Instead of claiming victory through dominance, Superman chooses a path of compassion, seeking to heal the wounded creature and find a way for them to coexist peacefully. Their epic encounter becomes a legend, a testament to the power of empathy and the potential for even the mightiest adversaries to embrace a better future together.

Buccellato said, “It’s definitely the classic characters. You’ve got a Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Hawkgirl — and also Supergirl!” Buccellato added, “A conceit from the beginning of the first issue is that Superman is about to go on his first vacation ever, so to make sure that they have their resident superpowered Kryptonian, Supergirl steps in to temporarily join the Justice League. She was probably my favorite add out of all of them. But you’re gonna see people from Gotham, you’ll see some Titans, you’ll see auxiliary Justice League members. The cast is pretty big.”
Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong #1 is scheduled to be released in stores on October 17, 2023.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE 2021 BOX OFFICE?
Godzilla vs. Kong is clearly on track to become the biggest box office hit since the COVID-19 pandemic struck last March. It’s now been over a year of theaters opening and closing their doors on repeat around the world, making it impossible for any major blockbusters to reach their full potential.
The mild success of the latest Monsterverse film demonstrates clear signs of recovery in the film industry, aided by the ongoing vaccine rollout. However, box office enthusiasts shouldn’t expect to see any billion-dollar-outings for some time to come still. Many theaters are operating at limited capacity, moviegoers remain cautious to enter packed screens, and many significant markets are still operating under restrictions — including the majority of Europe.
With the virus unlikely to disappear anytime soon, the box office numbers of Godzilla vs. Kong could indicate what Marvel fans should expect when Black Widow releases in July. Disney has been understandably hesitant to release its MCU prequel throughout the pandemic, given the film’s previous billion-dollar club potential, and the company will want to capture as much of that as possible.
The second half of 2021 has a packed film slate of the first MCU theatrical runs since 2019 joining the likes of James Gunn’s highly-anticipated The Suicide Squad and 007’s latest mission in No Time to Die. Assuming no more significant shifts in the global climate, the film industry could be in for a big comeback this year with over a year’s worth of delayed films finally dropping in theaters.
The Suicide Squad will be DC’s next film to hit HBO Max, as it drops on the service and in theaters on August 6.
Is there a Godzilla vs Kong end credits scene?
Legendary hasn’t indicated it might continue Godzilla vs Kong into a sequel, so there’s no end credits scene to tease a future film. However, the ending is left open, so it’s possible the two titans could meet again.
“The MonsterVerse is at a crossroads now,” director Adam Wingard told . “It’s really at the point where audiences have to kind of step forward and vote for more of these things. If this movie is a success obviously they will continue forward. But I actually think it’s good that there’s not a post-credit scene because, you know, the MonsterVerse is different from the Marvel universe. Just because you have a universe it doesn’t mean you have to do all the things that Marvel does. And ultimately I think it’s better with sequels to not pigeonhole yourself.»

Does Kong die?
At that point, it sure looks like Kong is a goner. However, Dr. Lind who uses one of Apex’s machines to jumpstart Kong’s heart. When he gets back up, Jia convinces him that Godzilla isn’t the true enemy.
Kong actually teams up with Godzilla to take on Mechagodzilla, the metal monster built by Apex using the Hollow Earth power source. Godzilla fires up the axe, which Kong uses on Mechagodzilla before ripping its head off.
After the two titans defeat Mechagodzilla, they form a wary truce toward each other. Godzilla returns to the ocean and Kong journeys to his new home in Hollow Earth.
So, while Godzilla did win in his head-to-head bouts with Kong, both live to fight another day — and perhaps each other, because who knows how long this peace will last.

Warner Bros.

IS THE DCEU FAILING?
It’s hardly a surprise to see the long-awaited Snyder Cut of Justice League lagging behind a major film like Godzilla vs. Kong, and there are a number of key factors attached to this.
The casual fans who haven’t closely followed the story behind the DC re-cut may confuse it for its original 2017 version, failing to realize it’s a new piece of work altogether. Additionally, Snyder’s vision of the superhero team-up is a four-hour R-Rated film, with an odd 4:3 aspect ratio that will prove jarring to many.
Meanwhile, the latest film in the Monsterverse is a brand-new family-friendly blockbuster that puts two iconic beings toe-to-toe in the biggest on-screen face-off in years. Naturally, it makes sense that the release would attract more viewers, even with a theatrical run taking away many viewers from its HBO Max viewership.
Forssell’s comments have revealed that many fans are watching the film multiple times, while statistics released for the Snyder Cut confirmed many were failing to even finish one viewing. The long runtime and slow first act of Snyder’s film may have held it back among general audiences, potentially being more tailored to hardcore viewers.
Given Wonder Woman 1984 launched in December as a simultaneous theatrical and HBO Max release, that film is far more comparable to Godzilla vs. Kong. Some may speculate from this that interest in the world of DC simply isn’t that high, but successes like Aquaman prove that under the right circumstances, the fans will be there.
James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad broke records upon its trailer debut, fetching immense viewership. With the director’s insane popularity following his work on the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, the villainous team-up could be the film Warner Bros. needs to reinvigorate interest in the franchise.
AMAZONS ATTACK EXPAND WONDER WOMAN FRANCHISE
Trial Of The Amazons cover by Jen Bartel. Credit: DC Comics
With the relaunch of the Wonder Woman series by Tom King and Daniel Sampere it created a lot of questions around what’s going on with the rest of the franchise. Now we know that there are some plans for other Wonder Woman characters in the form of Amazons Attack written by Josie Campbell and artwork by Vasco Georgiev. Amazons Attack appears to be a team book with Queen Nubia, Wonder Girl Yara Flor, Faruka, and Mary Marvel as the roster.
In terms of creative team Campbell proved she does have a good handle of the DCU with New Champions of Shazam. It being a mini-series also makes it a good proving ground if Wonder Woman can handle having more than one series, something the franchise hasn’t had much success with. We’ve seen that if a mini-series is successful, like G. Willow Wilson’s Poison Ivy, DC will not hesitate to greenlight it as an ongoing series. With that in mind it’ll not only be a test for Campbell and Georgiev as a creative but also provide an idea of the results of the creative investment in Nubia, Yara Flor, and Mary Marvel the last few years.
Though the way DC Comics announced it does not give much confidence in how much they believe in Amazons Attack. That’s because Amazons Attack appeared to just be an off-hand announcement during the Knight Terrors panel when they briefly spoke about possible spinoffs. Add in the lack of official artwork shown off, where as DC was happy to share art from Titans: Beast World and Justice League vs. Godzilla vs. Kong, it does not seem as though Amazons Attack is seen as a high-priority project. If it was SDCC 2023 would’ve been the perfect place to start building hype for Amazons Attack ahead of its release.

Godzilla vs Kong: Who wins?
Seriously, we’re about to spoil the ending … so stop reading now if you don’t want to know what happens.
First, let’s talk about the Antarctica battle. Early in the film, Godzilla attacks a facility of Apex Cybernetics. The CEO, Walter Simmons (Demián Bichir), believes there is a power source in the Hollow Earth — the birthplace of all titans — could be used to create a weapon to defeat Godzilla.
Simmons recruits Dr Nathan Lind (Alexander Skarsgård), who in turn persuades Kong’s protector Dr Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall) to lead them to Hollow Earth. When they arrive at the entry point in Antarctica, Godzilla senses his old enemy and attacks.

In their brawl, Kong almost drowns but the Navy ships turn off all power to trick Godzilla into thinking it has won. Kong barely makes it back aboard a boat.
Round one: Godzilla.
In the final face-off in Hong Kong, Godzilla and Kong’s duel is more evenly matched, thanks to a Hollow Earth axe that the ape wields. But Godzilla still overpowers Kong, slashes his chest its claws and stomps on him. But he doesn’t finish him; instead, Godzilla leaves a dying Kong. The ape tries to stand up, but falls — making the film’s tagline come true.
Round two and overall: Godzilla.
Does Kong die?
At that point, it sure looks like Kong is a goner. However, Dr. Lind who uses one of Apex’s machines to jumpstart Kong’s heart. When he gets back up, Jia convinces him that Godzilla isn’t the true enemy.

DC Announces a Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong Crossover Event
DC Comics has announced a collaboration with Legendary Comics which will be produced in partnership with Toho International. The monstrous crossover titled Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong will be a seven-issue crossover event that sees DC‘s biggest team of superheroes squaring off against two of pop culture’s biggest monsters in both size and popularity. The series was revealed during San Diego Comic-Con and will break down the barriers between these universes combining Legendary‘s Monsterverse with the DCU.
The creative team that will bring this crossover event to fans will be writer Brian Buccellato, artists Christian Duce and Luis Guerrero with covers from a slate of superstar artists including Jim Lee, Scott Williams, Drew Johnson, Rafael Albuquerque, Dan Mora, Francesco Mattina, and Alan Quah.
The series will see the Justice League battling their longtime foes, Legion of Doom which will open the doors to the crossover as the battle will open a doorway to the Legendary Monsterverse which sees Godzilla, Kong, and other monsters spill into the DC Comics universe.
Lee shared his excitement for this crossover, saying:
“As a comics fan—there’s nothing more fun and exciting than exploring those amazing ‘What If’ situations that come up when fandoms cross streams!” He continues “In this case, it’s a matchup of the world’s greatest Super Heroes in the Justice League who take on not only the King of the Monsters—Godzilla—but the mighty Kong himself! It’s a crossover no-holds-barred battle, decades in the making, and no bona fide comics fan will want to miss it!”
Buccellato added:
“I’ve had the good fortune to write most of the legendary DC Super Heroes before—from my time on The Flash, Detective Comics, and Injustice.” He adds “This time I get to build something way larger-than-life using all the toys in two different sandboxes. It’s such a thrill to tear open both the DC Universe and Legendary’s Monsterverse for this dream project.”
Call this wishful thinking, but as James Gunn prepares to usher in his and Peter Safran’s new phase of the DCU and as exciting as the casting announcements for Superman: Legacy has been, there are now new possibilities. Gunn has mentioned that all mediums of DC will be connected from what appears on screen to video games, and even comics. Short of this crossover falling into an Elseworlds storyline, this could in fact make Legendary‘s Monsterverse canon in the DCU. The possibility of a crossover of this caliber spilling into the big or small screen is a very exciting thought and although this is likely just a geek’s dream, here’s hoping that the “Gods and Monsters” phase had some hidden meaning behind it until now!
Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong #1 will be available at your favorite local comic shop and digitally on October 17, 2023.

DC COMICS WINS BIG AT EISNER AWARDS
Nightwing creative team wins several Eisner Awards at SDCC 2023. Credit: DC Comics
The Eisner Awards is one of the most, if the most, prestigious award in the comic book industry. At this year’s awards, when it comes to brands, DC Comics was the biggest winner of the night. Creators working on their titles won six awards with two additional creators winning awards with their project list including several DC Comics titles. The eight Eisner Awards won by DC Comics are:
- Best Single Issue/One-Shot – Batman: One Bad Day: The Riddler, by Tom King and Mitch Gerads (DC)
- Best Continuing Series – Nightwing, by Tom Taylor and Bruno Redondo (DC)
- Best Limited Series – The Human Target, by Tom King and Greg Smallwood (DC)
- Best Short Story – “Finding Batman” by Kevin Conroy and J. Bone in DC Pride 2022 (DC)
- Best Penciller/Inker or Penciller/Inker Team – Greg Smallwood, The Human Target (DC)
- Best Cover Artist – Bruno Redondo, Nightwing (DC)
- Best Writer – James Tynion IV, House of Slaughter, Something Is Killing the Children, Wynd (BOOM! Studios); The Nice House on the Lake, The Sandman Universe: Nightmare Country (DC), The Closet, The Department of Truth (Image Comics)
- Best Coloring – Jordie Bellaire, The Nice House on the Lake, Suicide Squad: Blaze (DC); Antman, Miracleman by Gaiman & Buckingham: The Silver Age (Marvel)
A huge congratulations to all the creators who won Eisner Awards. It is a major accomplishment, specifically showing the investment with the Batman Family is working as four of the six individual awards for that franchise while Human Target got the other two. Now DC Comics needs to take the success of the Batman Family and give the same creative investment to their other franchises.

Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong: A Surprising and Much-Anticipated Crossover
Prior to the commencement of San Diego Comic-Con, a major leak had already sent shockwaves through the comic world. DC Comics had planned to unveil an extraordinary crossover at the convention, but the surprise was somewhat spoiled. The project in question is the astonishing crossover of Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong, which combines our favorite superheroes with legendary monsters. Following the success of recent Warner films featuring these iconic creatures, this comic book miniseries will unite DC heroes with the creatures from the Monsterverse. If successful, it could become the start of a series of comics merging these two worlds. The screenplay will be written by Brian Buccellato, while Christian Duce will handle the artwork. This crossover is set for release on November 14, 2023, promising an epic battle that will captivate comic book enthusiasts.
GODZILLA VS. KONG LEAPS OVER DC BLOCKBUSTERS
Warner Bros.
According to HBO Max, Godzilla vs. Kong totaled more viewers in its first four days than any other film or show since the service released last May. Warner Bros. didn’t provide any specific viewing figures but confirmed the simultaneous streaming and theatrical release fetched the record-breaking drop.
The newly-established record means the film has surpassed the debuts of DC’s most recent releases on the service, Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Wonder Woman 1984.
Meanwhile, in theaters, the latest Monsterverse epic has lined itself up to take the crown as the biggest release since the pandemic began with $285.4 million at the global box office, including $48.5 million domestically.
By comparison, the previous pandemic hit Tenet ended its entire domestic run at $57.9 million, a number Godzilla vs. Kong will likely eclipse next week to become the biggest theatrical run in over a year.
WarnerMedia Direct-Consumer exec Andy Forssell commented on the success, saying that the fans have “spoken very clearly and loudly,” going on to claim many are “watching it more than once”:
