Zombie for Sale

A family observes a zombie from a safe distance in «Zombie for Sale.»

What if zombie bites weren’t all bad? More specifically, what if a nip from the undead would give the impotent new life below the belt? That’s the preposterous premise that kicks off this gleefully bonkers South Korean comedy. The Park family is scraping by running a battered gas station when their fortunes are turned by a zombie (Jung Ga-ram) with a rejuvenating bite. That’s just the first act of director Lee Min-jae’s playful horror-comedy. Family hijinks, ghoulish action, gross-out gags, and absurdly earnest romance also pop up, making for a movie that is chaotically charming and pleasantly unpredictable.

Different approaches

Differing from past V/H/S movies, all of these segments have supernatural themes. Bruckner’s short – or rather what he labels the ‘wraparound’ – Total Copy, is presented as a made-for-TV documentary following a group of scientists studying an unusual slime-covered entity named Rory. This chapter acts as the glue holding the whole movie together, with small clips playing in between the other shorts. The storyline was dreamed up by Bruckner and writer Evan Dickson whilst binging ’80s horror movies in a cabin in the woods. The pair watched Joseph Ruben’s Dreamscape, Stuart Gordan’s From Beyond, and David Cronenberg’s Videodrome for inspiration, then as Bruckner explains «jammed on some ideas until we landed on something that was alien but also, whether we wanted to or not, AI».

Meanwhile Doctor Strange director Derrickson’s short, Dreamkill, is not overtly sci-fi but in a Sixth Sense fashion uses the supernatural to guide the story. Dreamkill follows a teenager named Gunther, played by Derrickson’s son, Dashiell, as he starts to dream up horrific murders that tape themselves onto a VCR, then later coming true. Mixing gore with the paranormal is common practice for Derrickson, who tells GamesRadar+ that his V/H/S short was inspired by his recent movie The Black Phone, and even takes place in the same timeline.

Nelson, director of the 2021 reboot Wrong Turn , took a slightly different approach to making his short, that is actually split into two separate parts. Nelson’s two-for-one starts with a group of teens heading to the lake, but it’s not Jason they meet at the camp, but a seemingly harmless assailant. Due to unnatural forces, the murders don’t go to plan and in the second act, Ambrosia, the victims seek revenge. As the filmmaker told GamesRadar+, he felt he had permission to go wild with this final act:  «The supernatural element was something that I wanted to incorporate already. For the most part with all the directors, we’re usually working in a bubble — we pitch a story, we write a script, and then we get handed the keys to go nuts.»

Rift

Want something uniquely chilling? Then check out this 2017 Icelandic thriller set in a frigid and frightful landscape. Written and directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen, Rift follows a man (Björn Stefánsson) to a remote cabin, where he hopes to help his distraught ex-boyfriend (Sigurður Þór Óskarsson) and maybe find some closure over their breakup. However, their reunion is rattled by a series of strange events that suggest they aren’t alone. Something is in the darkness, watching and waiting. This fantastic film lures you in with beautiful vistas and a slow-burn pace, then spirals into scares sure to linger like a cold shiver down your spine.

10 Guinea Pig Franchise

Guinea Pig: Devil’s Experiment (1985) – Trailer (HQ)

Watch this video on YouTube

Director Satoru Ogura’s 1985 Japanese horror movie Guinea Pig: Devil’s Experiment, which showcases the torture of a kidnapped woman, launched the Guinea Pig franchise, a total of six brutal films replete with blood, guts, and gore. According to the horror movie magazine Fangoria, the second installment of the franchise, Guinea Pig 2: Flower of Flesh and Blood (1985), also launched a probe by the U.S. FBI.

Horrified by what he saw and certain that the movie was a genuine snuff film, which shows actual murder, actor Charlie Sheen not only notified the FBI but also gave agents the copy he’d viewed. Both the FBI and the Japanese police had already begun an investigation. At the end of their inquiry, they concluded that Guinea Pig 2 was not the real deal but a simulation of a snuff film, featuring “a guy dressed as a samurai dismembering and disemboweling a young woman.” A British court made the same finding during the trial of a defendant caught importing a copy of the film.

Subsequent films in the series depict similar heinous acts of sadism and murder. Attempted suicide, mutilation, and decapitation are depicted in Guinea Pig 3: Shudder! The Man Who Never Dies (1986). Murder and dismemberment are pictured in Guinea Pig 4: Mermaid in a Manhole (1988). Mutilation, exploding heads, perspiring blood, and the slicing of flesh are on display in Guinea Pig 5: Devil Woman Doctor (1990).

8 Men Behind the Sun & Its Three Sequels

Watch this video on YouTube

Men Behind the Sun (1988), directed by T. F. Mou, is about violence, not sex. A TV Tropes review of the film calls it disturbing in its depiction of the Imperial Japanese Army’s Unit 731, which during World War II conducted “medical research and biological/chemical weapon experiments on captive human subjects,” often in nauseating detail. However, the movie’s scenes are not based on historical accounts of the atrocities. Its basis is a serialized novel that ran in a Japanese Communist Party newspaper of “questionable” reliability, and its reputed facts are “dubious.”

Although the picture may not be based on facts, it prompted three others, Laboratory of the Devil, Narrow Escape, and Black Sun: The Nanking Massacre, each of which portrays additional atrocities and Japanese war crimes, including the removal of a well-developed fetus from the belly of a pregnant woman, the beheading of a man, and a number of bloody, disgusting experiments.

The Queen of Black Magic

Something wicked this way comes in «The Queen of Black Magic» (2020).
Credit: sHudder

It’s a rare thing for a remake to outdo the original. Yet Kimo Stamboel’s gruesome 2019 offering does just that by upping the ante on body-horror with frightfully realistic gore. Deep in rural Indonesia, a humble orphanage is supposed to be the site of a warm reunion between three friends (Ario Bayu, Tanta Gintin, and Miller Khan), who long ago spent their boyhoods there. But in the past and in this place, they buried a terrible secret. Now, something horrid has risen to claim vengeance on them and their families. With creeping dread, stomach-churning scares, and ruthless supernatural twists, this one is not for the faint of heart.

Parts of ‘Dreamkill’ Strike Deep in ‘V/H/S/85’

Image through Shudder

Though the concept that it’s related to The Black Phone makes it much less fascinating reasonably than extra compelling, Scott Derrickson’s “Dreamkill” has a few of the most putting visuals because it drags us right into a nightmare. Although every thing else round it’s much less mesmerizing and extra clunky, the best way we’re pulled into this extra unsettling strategy does handle to get at one thing higher. Did it make me simply want I used to be re-watching Skinamarink? Yes, however the small moments of brilliance listed below are magnificent. Had the collection had the boldness to truly settle into this and never simply dance round it, then it actually might have been one thing particular. That is itself a great way of summing up the expertise of V/H/S/85 writ giant. There are moments of bolder visions at play, however this isn’t sufficient to make up for the components which might be far much less so. The finest two shorts, which find yourself collapsing into basically one, nonetheless depart a bloody affect. The relaxation are sporadically fascinating although largely disposable, making for a hit-or-miss expertise each general and inside every quick.

While this collection has all the time struggled in some respect, there may be nonetheless motive to be glad that it’s persevering with on with new entries. Providing a chance for particular person administrators to attempt issues out can result in some good things, particularly in a horror panorama that may usually really feel too outlined by soulless sequels reasonably than recent takes. When inventive administrators are given the possibility to take huge swings and truly achieve this, the consequence can result in nightmarish experiences not like something on the market. The glimpses of this in V/H/S/85 function a reminder of the worth of the collection and the visions it could possibly in the end present a house for.

1 Nekromantic and Nekromantic 2

Nekromantik (1987) Trailer

Watch this video on YouTube

Directed by Jörg Buttgereit, Nekromantic is about a woman who becomes smitten with a corpse her boyfriend Bob has brought home, preferring the cadaver to Bob himself. Ironically, Buttgereit made the movie to protest government censorship. However, it was the sequel, Nekromantic 2 (1991), that German authorities banned, confiscating it in a Munich theater, before raiding Buttgereit’s home, trying to destroy the negative and seeking to charge him with glorifying violence, a very serious allegation.

Buttgereit believes that the authorities took such actions against the sequel rather than the first film because, when he released Nekromantic in 1987, they had no idea who he was. However, when they saw that he intended to persist in making controversial movies, they decided to take these actions. Fortunately for the director, an art historian interpreted Nekromantic 2 as “a metaphor for East Germany,” and a judge who’d viewed the movie accepted this view, lifting the ban.

Speak No Evil

Year: 2022Runtime: 1h 37mDirector: Christian Tafdrup

Stop being so nice to people. That’s arguably the theme of this shocking 2022 genre hit, now exclusively on Shudder. Two couples who became friends on vacation meet up again and discover they have less in common than they first thought. As micro-aggressions become macro-aggressions, this Haneke-inspired film seems to be encouraging people to stand up when they sense something is wrong, or risk never being able to stand again. The final scenes are so shocking that viewers should be warned that this is not for the faint of heart.

Speak No Evil

What Is the Best Short in ‘V/H/S/85’?

Image through Shudder

The spotlight of the expertise is Mike P. Nelson’s quick the place a gaggle of associates goes on a visit to a lake. They crack jokes, drink, and usually appear to be having a superb time. However, after they exit on a ship, every thing turns into a nightmare after they begin getting shot at by a sniper they can’t see. It is a random and unbroken act of grotesque violence the place the phobia comes from how little they’ll see the place it’s coming from. Though it solely performs out over a couple of minutes, it feels prefer it goes on for a lifetime because the mangled our bodies surrounding the survivors function a reminder of what is going to occur in the event that they poke their heads up too far. There is a extra reserved and gritty strategy to the way it all unfolds that ensures every gunshot cuts that a lot deeper. You have the sense which might be really there with the characters, unable to flee and unable to remain. The subsequent means this finally ends up coming into play later provides an additional layer to it, leading to one of many extra nice surprises of the package deal. The remainder of the movie is much less profitable than this, making this robust begin the top.

In specific, the shorts a few technological efficiency artwork present gone awry and the tv broadcast that will get disrupted by an earthquake are a lot much less fascinating. The former is a bit sillier, concluding with a terrific punchline, however nonetheless stands out for a way stiff it’s. There is a part to this that will have been intentional, with the awkwardness of efficiency artwork being one thing it desires to skewer, nevertheless it’s an instantly perceptible ingredient that does not add far more to the narrative. The earthquake story is way much less fascinating, carrying on and on to the purpose that the eventual revelation about what it has uncovered comes far too late. It can be the one the place the constant use of the digital camera appears the least natural, making it exhausting to get invested within the twists and turns it takes whenever you’re held at a distance. Found footage could be a powerful factor to drag off, with even nice movies like this yr’s The Outwaters having points that drag, and that’s positively the case right here. The wraparound sequence doesn’t actually assist to carry this collectively, however there may be one different second that does stand out.

6 Angel Guts Franchise

ANGEL GUTS: HIGH SCHOOL CO-ED (1978) | DISTURBING BREAKDOWNS

Watch this video on YouTube

Roman porno, or “romance porno,” saved Nikkatsu when Japan’s oldest film studio faced financial ruin, says Jim McLennan, in his Film Blitz review of the five-film franchise produced between 1978 and 1994. Inspired by Takashii Ishii’s manga comic book Tenshi No Harawata (also known as Angel Guts), the series involves a woman, Nami, who, despite sharing the name with the series’ later films, “is not the same character in each film.” A victim both of physical violence and rape, she suffers the consequences of the crimes throughout the films.

The differences in the character seem to stem from the fact that four directors were involved in the making of the five films. If the disturbing series can be said to have a theme, McLennan agrees with Artmagic’s contention that the Angel Guts series can be seen as “a tribute to the courage of violated woman in a world of male violence.”

Сезон 2

Эпизод 1 («Show for children»)

V/H/S/85: A Nostalgic Journey into ’80s Horror

V/H/S/85 marks the sixth installment of the anthology franchise that started in 2012, known for its gritty violence and found-footage horror style. Check out the trailer for this eagerly anticipated shocker.

Following its world premiere at the Fantastic Fest in Austin, V/H/S/85 is set to debut in North America on October 6, 2023, exclusively on Shudder, the streaming service specializing in horror content. Unfortunately, details about the film’s release in Germany are yet to be disclosed.

Early reviews in the United States are already highly positive. Some critics are even comparing V/H/S/85 favorably to the franchise’s most popular entry, the second film. The film’s authentic 1980s atmosphere receives consistent praise. There are no notable missteps, and the overarching storyline reportedly delivers a highly satisfying conclusion. So, anticipation is building.

This time, genre luminaries such as David Bruckner (Hellraiser: Hellworld), Scott Derrickson (The Black Phone, Doctor Strange), Gigi Saul Guerrero (Bingo Hell), Natasha Kermani (Lucky), and Mike P. Nelson (Wrong Turn: The Foundation) took the helm.

Producers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, known for their work on Scream 6, once again oversaw the production. The cast features notable names including Freddy Rodriguez from TV hits like Six Feet Under and Bull, Dani Deetté (The Falcon And The Winter Soldier), and James Ransone (Sinister).

Re-Animator

Year: 1985Runtime: 1h 25mDirector: Stuart Gordon

A lot of filmmakers have tried to incorporate H.P. Lovecraft into their work either as an influence or direct adaptation, but Stuart Gordon’s 1985 cult hit remains arguably the best. Adapting Lovecraft’s Herbert West—Reanimator into a feature film, Gordon is fearless, making a movie that contains some of the most memorably twisted images and ideas of its era. Originally X-rated for its overall insanity, this is a riff on the classic tale of medical science gone malevolent as a doctor starts re-animating dead bodies. Never a good idea.

9 Entrails of a Virgin, Entrails of a Beautiful Woman, and Female Inquisitor

Entrails of a Virgin movie reaction and review UW+R

Watch this video on YouTube

Reviewer James Mudge regards director Kazuo “Gaira” Komizu’s 1986 film Entrails of a Virgin as a misogynistic mix of softcore pornography. It focuses on violence against women and heaping helpings of sex in which female characters are subjected “to awful acts of perversion before they die” at the hands of a thoughtful swamp creature resembling “a guy covered in mud and a little white face paint” who spouts “hilarious and incomprehensible philosophies.”

Despite such unintentional comedy, Entrails makes an effort, at least, to have a plot: after getting lost in the fog-shrouded forest where they’d been shooting a pornographic movie, a film crew holes up in an abandoned building to party and engage in “kinky sex games, humiliation, and a lot of wrestling” before the swamp monster interrupts, killing victims one by one.

Mudge also reviews Entrails of a Beautiful Woman (1986), which, he says, is another slice of softcore sex, misogyny, and violence, “with a penis-headed monster thrown in for good measure.” According to a Horror News review, the franchise’s third installment, Female Inquisitor (1987), also known as Rusted Body: Guts of a Virgin, subjects its female characters to the torturous examinations of an “oversexed female interrogator with a penchant for sadomasochism and torture” who is bent on extorting money from an embezzler.
