Behind the camera
For Marvel fans, Waititi’s return as director is welcome news. Thor: Ragnarok, Thor’s third solo adventure, charmed audiences with its unique mix of humor and action and its colorful, Jack Kirby-inspired production design. Thor: Ragnarok earned $854 million at the global box office, and helped pave the way for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, in which the beer-guzzling, pot-bellied “Bro Thor” quickly became a fan favorite.

Waititi’s Thor encore comes with at least one casualty. Warner Bros.’ live-action take on Akira, Katsuhiro Otomo’s seminal manga and anime film, has been put on hold. Previously, Waititi was expected to direct the adaptation, but delays stemming from script problems pushed Akira‘s production date too close to Love and Thunder, forcing Waititi to leave the project.
Love and Thunder isn’t the only big project on Waititi’s plate, either. The small-screen adaptation of Waititi’s What We Do in the Shadows, which Waititi both produces and occasionally directs, has already been renewed for a second season. Waititi will also be directing an episode of the Disney+ Star Wars spinoff The Mandalorian and will play one of its supporting characters, the assassin droid IG-11.

Bale the God Butcher
At Disney’s 2020 Investor Day, the studio confirmed previous reports that Christian Bale has joined the cast. And they told us who he’s playing: Gorr the God Butcher.
Who is Gorr? Growing up on a nameless barren planet, Gorr lost his faith in gods after his family died, becoming an outcast from his tribe. When he discovered the existence of gods, he vowed to kill them all, including Thor, Odinson. Gorr is empowered by All-Black the Necrosword, a mystical weapon that allows its users to fly at extreme speeds and fight with extreme strength. In the comics, the sword is the catalyst that sends Gorr on a massive celestial killing spree and pitting him against Thor.
Thor and Gorr meet numerous times throughout the comics, often with time travel and Gorr’s army of berserkers involved. Still no word on how exactly Gorr will be weaved into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
If I had a hammer
Last frame, Disney and Marvel Studios’ superhero sequel Thor: Love and Thunder began with $144.1M, the #30 opening weekend of all time.
This frame, it falls -68% to $46.0M, the #75 second weekend of all time.
That’s a sharper drop than any other pandemic-era MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) title to receive theatrical exclusivity:
- May’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (-67%)
- 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home (also -67%), though its second weekend fell during arguably the single worst week of Covid-19’s Omicron wave.
- Eternals (-62%)
- Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (-54%)
- It also ties the second-weekend drop of Black Widow (-68%), though that film was released day-and-date simultaneously in cinemas and Disney+.
It’s also a steeper drop than any of Chris Hemsworth’s title character’s five prior installments:
- 2011’s Thor (-47%)
- 2013’s Thor: The Dark World (-57%)
- 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok (-53%)
- 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War (-55%)
- 2019’s Avengers: Endgame (-59%)

Hercules in Marvel’s TV and Games
Though Hercules is just now making his live-action Marvel debut, he has appeared in a number of Marvel’s animated and video game projects.
TV: Hercules first appeared in 1966’s The Marvel Super Heroes, where he was voiced by Len Birman and played a recurring part in the show’s «Mighty Thor» segments. He then had silent cameos in Fox’s X-Men and Fantastic Four animated series in the ’90s and larger roles in Hulk and the Agents of SMASH (voiced by Townsend Coleman) and Avengers: Secret Wars (voiced by Matthew Mercer).
Games: Hercules is a boss character in 2009’s Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2, which is heavily based on Marvel’s Civil War comics. He’s also a playable character in the Facebook game Marvel: Avengers Alliance and has appearances in Marvel Super Hero Squad: Infinity Gauntlet and the now-defunct Marvel heroes.

The story
We last saw Thor at the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame, when the thunder god headed into space alongside the Guardians of the Galaxy, his shiny new ax in hand. Right now, it’s not clear if the highly anticipated “Asgardians of the Galaxy” team-up will continue, or if Thor and the Guardians will go their separate ways for their respective sequels.
Reports so far suggest that Thor: Love and Thunder might actually shift its focus to the characters around Hemsworth’s Thor, with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) inheriting the “Mighty Thor” mantle and Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) serving as the ruler of Asgard.
Still, as one of the few founding Avengers still standing, Thor is poised to play a major role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s fourth phase. With Tony Stark and Black Widow gone, the Hulk injured, and both Captain America and Hawkeye retired, it’s up to Thor to bridge the gap between the members of the old-school MCU and newcomers like the Eternals and Shang-Chi.

The god herself?
In one of the biggest announcements to come out of Marvel’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the studio revealed that actress Natalie Portman will not only reprise her role as Jane Foster in Love and Thunder but will also become a new, female Thor.
Portman made a surprise appearance onstage during the event to announce her return to the role — a character she hasn’t portrayed in a featured role since 2013’s Thor: The Dark World.
How Portman’s new God of Thunder will be integrated into the MCU remains a mystery, one that’s already generating quite a bit of buzz.
Speaking with Serena Williams on Instagram Live in July, Portman expressed her excitement to reprise the role. “She’s actually The Mighty Thor. The comics had the female Thor when Jane becomes Thor, and she’s The Mighty Thor,” she said. “We haven’t started . More time to get jacked. Which I have not. I’ve got the carbo-loading down, but not the exercise part! Obviously, everything is weird because of pandemic time, who knows what’s happening. It will be exciting and I’m interested to see if I can gain muscle.”
While Portman is back, she’ll likely be the only major cast member from the two early Thor films. Speaking with ET, Kat Dennings, who played Darcy in the first two films, said she has not been asked to return for Thor: Love and Thunder. “I don’t think I’m in it,” she said. “I feel like I would have heard by now.”
Brett Goldstein’s Hercules in the MCU
Thor: Love and Thunder follows the example of most MCU movies by teasing a major, upcoming conflict in its mid-credits scene. There, we see Russell Crowe’s Zeus (wounded, but not dead), lamenting that humanity no longer respects and fears the gods of Olympus. Instead, all they care about are their costumed superheroes. With the help of his super-strong son Hercules — played by none other than Ted Lasso’s Brett Goldstein — Zeus aims to remind humans why they once feared the gods.
The obvious takeaway here is that Zeus and Hercules will return in a fifth Thor movie, with Thor and his fellow Asgardians forced to intervene in a war between Olympus and Midgard. Though it’s also possible Marvel Studios is teasing a standalone Hercules movie instead, or possibly setting up a conflict for a team movie like The Thunderbolts or The Avengers 5.
Marvel Cinematic Universe: Every Upcoming Movie and TV Show
Either way, we can expect Hercules to play a more antagonistic role in the MCU when he first resurfaces. This is clearly a god who’s lost touch with his human side and lives only for war and the thrill of battle. But if the comics are any indication, Herc will surely mellow out with time. He may come to realize Zeus is wrong about humanity. Maybe he’ll borrow a page or two from Thor’s own history and become the defender of the mortal realm rather than its destroyer.
Goldstein’s Hercules may start out as a villain in Thor 5, but we suspect by the end he and Thor will be knocking back flagons of mead and swapping stories. After that, we can only hope an Incredible Hercules series is in the cards on Disney+.

Does Thor 4 have any post-credits scenes?
As I just said, there’s no question that Love and Thunder will feature post-credits scenes once the movie ends. That’s a tentpole feature of MCU projects, whether they’re movies or TV shows. It’s very rare for Marvel to avoid post-credits. Avengers: Endgame is the only recent example that comes to mind.
Love and Thunder isn’t as big of a movie as Endgame, however. And it’s not as pivotal. Therefore, we do expect post-credits scenes from Thor 4. Leaving the theater when the credits start rolling would be a bad idea.
We have no idea how many post-credits scenes Marvel planned for Love and Thunder, but a Twitter account called Marvel Updates claims we can look forward to two post-credits scenes in the film.
Mind you, this is not an official Marvel account. And we can’t verify the claims just yet. But it makes sense to expect anywhere between one and three post-credits scenes for MCU movies like Love and Thunder.

Guardians return
Given that Thor spent so much time with the Guardians of the Galaxy in Avengers: Infinity War, it was fair to wonder if we may see another crossover in Thor: Love and Thunder. And while we can’t speak for the whole gang, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed in November that at least Star-Lord would return in the upcoming film. Then, in a December Instagram post, Pom Klementieff revealed she’s in Sydney shooting Thor: Love and Thunder, reprising her role as Mantis.
Last we saw them, Thor and the Guardians were leaving Earth together in Avengers: Endgame so it’s possible Thor: Love and Thunder is just picking up where Endgame left off. Only time will tell.

Asgardians assemble
Although Hemsworth is expected to reprise his role as Thor, he won’t be the only prominent Asgardian featured in the film.

Tessa Thompson, who made her debut as Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok (see above) and reprised the role in Avengers: Endgame, will also return to play a key role in Love and Thunder. Additionally, Jaimie Alexander has also confirmed via Instagram that she will reprise her role as Asgardian warrior Sif.
The film will reportedly feature Valkyrie’s search for a partner to rule Asgard beside her, after having been given the throne in Endgame. Valkyrie will become the first official LGBTQIA+ character in the MCU.
Loki, Silver Surfer, and … Iron Man?
Taika Waititi hosted a live watch-along event for Thor: Ragnarok on Thursday (aka “Thor’s day”) via Instagram, and along with featuring virtual visits from Ragnarok actors Tessa Thompson and Mark Ruffalo, the session also included some interesting details shared by the filmmaker.
Although Waititi would neither confirm nor deny the presence of rumored cast member Christian Bale or the potential return of Tom Hiddleston as Loki, he did indicate that one character definitely won’t be appearing in the film, contrary to recent rumors: The cosmic hero known as Silver Surfer.
Waititi described Thor: Love and Thunder as “like 10-year-olds told us what should be in a movie and we said yes to every single thing.”
The event eventually transformed into an impromptu question-and-answer session with Waititi, and the filmmaker pranked viewers with what is certainly a joke script from Thor: Love and Thunder.

The script revealed the return of Tony Stark — with “Science” being the only explanation for his resurrection — and had him utter the line, “Wazzuuuuurrp!” The fake script also indicated that Thanos was back, and the team would be renamed “The Avengererers” in Thor: Love and Thunder.
Although this fake script was good fun, speaking with the BBC, Waititi did describe the actual script for Thor: Love & Thunder as “insane” and “romantic.
“I think it’s going to be really good,” he said. “We’ve finished, we’ve been writing the script off and on for over a year and I’m just, actually this week, doing another pass on it. It is so insane and also very romantic. I’m into romances now. I just want to make a romance. I want to make something that I’ve never done or never cared for. I would like to attack something like that.”
So while Stark probably isn’t coming back from the dead to fall in love with Thor, some other crazy romance may be in store.

It stands to reason that a film with Gorr the God Butcher as the primary villain would have more than just one god (Thor) to butcher. Sure enough, during a recent interview with the Australian radio station Joy 94.9, Russell Crowe revealed he’s playing Zeus in Thor: Love and Thunder.
Marvel’s version of the Olympian pantheon, as you might expect, isn’t exactly like Greek mythology. In the comics, Olympians are extradimensional beings that hail from Olympus, an adjacent dimension to Earth. There has been a lot of buzz about the multiverse in the next phase of the MCU and this continues to add gas to that fire.
Hercules’ History in the Marvel Universe
Hercules is among the many iconic Marvel heroes created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. His first official Marvel appearance came in 1965’s Journey Into Mystery Annual #1. Another version of Hercules appeared the previous year in The Avengers #10, but that character has since been revealed to be an impostor.
Marvel’s version of Hercules sticks fairly closely to the popular Greek myths. Arguably closer than Thor, who’s kind of a jerk in most Norse tales. Hercules is the son of Zeus and a mortal woman named Alcmena. He was originally raised by his human parents under the name Alcaeus, before becoming aware of his divine heritage and taking the name Herakles. But because Zeus’ wife Hera often made Herakles the target of her wrath, he eventually changed his name to Hercules instead.

Herc’s formative years were filled with many exploits that have since become the stuff of legend. He teamed up with Jason and the Argonauts to find the fabled Golden Fleece. He undertook his Twelve Labors in order to prove himself worthy of immortality. But though he enjoys the fame that comes with these accomplishments, Hercules is all too aware of the fact that reality and myth don’t always line up.
Hercules first surfaces in the modern Marvel era as an enemy to Thor, but the two quickly put aside their differences, and Thor helps save Herc from spending an eternity stuck ruling over the realm Hades. Hercules later joins the Avengers and also serves as a member of the Champions, regularly proving his valor alongside Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
Though Marvel published a handful of Hercules-centric miniseries in the ’80s, he didn’t truly come into his own as a solo lead until the 2007 series The Incredible Hercules. That book pairs Herc with teen genius Amadeus Cho, as both become fugitives thanks to the events of the World War Hulk crossover. It’s also the comic that spawned a very popular Internet meme.

Over the course of that series, Herc and Amadeus battle enemies like the Skrull gods, Hera and the Japanese god Amatsu Mikaboshi, with Herc eventually sacrificing his godly power to rebuild the universe. Herc has since regained his strength and continues to fight in defense of humanity. Though lately, his adventures have taken him away from Earth as a member of the newest incarnation of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
