A Spiderverse?

Molina addressed the key question of how Otto is alive again and how his appearance works when the Sony Spider-Man movies are a separate continuity from the MCU.
He asked No Way Home’s director, John Watts, and got an intriguing answer: “In this universe, no one really dies.”
It’s stated Otto’s story picks up right where it left off with him in the river. This combines with word that Jamie Foxx will be reprising his role of Electro from 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
This fuels the long-standing fan theory that the movie will involve a live-action “Spider-Verse” somehow connecting the three separate Spider-Man movie continuities. This could also be a tie-in for the coming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness film.
2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse used the concept of different Spider-Men (and one Woman) meeting up. A fun bit was an alternate version of Doctor Octopus, only this one called Olivia and voiced by WandaVision star Kathryn Hahn.
Notably, Tom Holland has repeatedly told interviewers that the film will not have either Tobey Maguire or Andrew Garfield appearing. Yet Molina’s appearance does make it hard to believe such an epic meeting will not take place.
While much of the story remains under wraps, Molina will finally get his dream of once more donning Doc Ock’s metallic arms on the big screen.
Spider-Man: No Way Home premieres in theaters December 17.
Where Doc Ock’s Story Picks Up In No Way Home
With Doctor Octopus looking like he did in 2004, Molina revealed Spider-Man: No Way Home will pick up in Otto’s final moment in Spider-Man 2. When Molina’s return came out, many wondered how it would be possible since Doc Ock dies in a redeeming sacrifice during Spider-Man 2’s climax. In the final scene between Otto and Peter, the antagonist takes Spider-Man’s words into account about how he can still walk away from the darkness. Instead of destroying New York, Doctor Octopus sacrifices himself to stop the reactor by drowning himself with it. However, with the nature of comic book storytelling, the dead don’t always stay dead.
With the existence of Multiverses and time-travel, deceased characters always have ways of returning to superhero stories. Molina reveals that Watts had pitched him the idea that Spider-Man: No Way Home will pick up right at that crucial moment in Spider-Man 2’s climax. Rather than somehow undoing his death and following Otto over a decade later, the MCU’s third Spider-Man installment will get to revisit that colossal moment. With the combination of being de-aged through CGI and getting to go back to that timeline, Molina was open about it being a fun opportunity to revisit that character.
Who is Doctor Octopus?
One of Spider-Man’s oldest and most iconic enemies, Doc Ock first appeared in Amazing Spider-Man #3 in 1962.
Otto Octavius was a brilliant (and arrogant) scientist who utilized mentally-controlled extending metal arms in his lab work. An explosion caused the arms to fuse to Octavius’ body and also drove him mad.
Turning to crime, Doctor Octopus would battle Spider-Man constantly throughout the years, either alone or with the Sinister Six. He was briefly killed off in 1994 but returned.

A major storyline in 2012 had a dying Ock manage to swap bodies with Peter Parker to become a “Superior Spider-Man.” After Peter got his body back, Otto acquired a new cloned body in prime physical health to continue as a hero.
To defeat a deadly threat, Otto made a deal with the demon Mephisto to return to his old body and give up his memories of Spider-Man’s true identity and his heroic crusade, thus returning to a pure villain.
Doctor Octopus’ Tentacles Are Used A Lot
One of Doctor Octopus’ most prominent aspects is the physicality that comes with Otto having four mechanical tentacle arms. In Spider-Man 2, Doc Ock was a challenging opponent for Peter because the tentacles were almost four separate threats of their own. It is not until Spider-Man 2’s ending where Otto gets a sense of control over them as he demanded they obey him. While Molina was reassured about Spider-Man: No Way Home utilizing de-aging CGI, he still had questions about Doc Ock’s physical activity. Even if he looks younger, Otto is still a very action-driven super-villain which will be the case for the upcoming MCU Phase 4 film.
Molina used The Irishman as an example where Robert De Niro’s character was de-aged. While he looked younger, but during fight scenes, the actor physically moved like he was older. That was important for Molina to see resolved before returning to the role, but luckily Doctor Octopus has not one but four solutions. While Molina doesn’t give away the context of the action scenes, he made it clear that the tentacles do the heavy work. During the interview, Molina had demonstrated during the Zoom chat the facial reactions he was doing as Doctor Octopus in fight scenes. With the combination of CGI de-aging and practical work, the tentacles will heavily factor once again when Otto returns in Spider-Man: No Way Home.
How Doc Ock Can Enter The MCU
The bigger mystery with Molina’s Doctor Octopus return in Spider-Man: No Way Home is how he enters the MCU. Even though Doctor Strange connects to the Multiverse, it is hard to picture the Avenger somehow pulling in a super-villain from another reality. Since there is so much secrecy around the Spider-Man trilogy’s finale, could there be another character in the film that somehow brings Molina’s Doc Ock into the MCU? Since the story will pick up right at the end of Spider-Man 2, it will also include a sense of time travel. He may be specifically pulled out of that moment in time and potentially transported to the Earth of the MCU. Even though it risks ruining the 2004 film’s ending, there are ways where they can still maintain his conclusion he had.
With the concept of time travel, there could be a timeline in Spider-Man 2 where Otto still has his redeemable arc. Simultaneously, another timeline gets created when Doctor Octopus gets included for whatever storyline Spider-Man: No Way Home is doing with him. There is also the potential that Otto’s MCU arc ends with him returning to his Earth and placed back in that Spider-Man 2 moment where he still sacrifices himself to save New York City. By having Molina de-aged through CGI in Spider-Man: No Way Home, there is also the chance that they may include flashbacks as well. It seems fair to determine that Molina will have a significant role in the film rather than being a simple cameo, which is why they could be doing flashbacks for Doc Ock too.
In conclusion, since Molinas’ original Doctor Octopus is the one Spider-Man: No Way Home is using, that surely means Foxx’s Electro will be the same character from The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Even if Max Dillon isn’t blue this time around, it would be easy to explain that Electro evolved his look after the battle against Garfield’s Spider-Man. Even if Marvel and Sony won’t confirm it, at least for now, it is looking more likely that Maguire and Garfield will join Holland in some capacity as their Spider-Men. While it is not shocking that Molina will play his Doctor Octopus, it is still fun to have that confirmed, while it also raises a lot of new mysteries for Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Doctor Octopus Will Be De-Aged
It has been 17 years since the release of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 that brought Doctor Octopus to the big screen for the first time. As Peter Parker struggled with his powers, the plot also saw Otto’s transformation into the iconic Marvel villain. When Molina initially portrayed Doctor Octopus, he was in his late 40s during principal photography of Spider-Man 2. When Molina was approached about reprising his character, the actor was concerned that he doesn’t look like he did in Spider-Man 2. But Spider-Man: No Way Home director Jon Watts quickly assuaged Molina’s concerns.
Molina recapped the conversation he had with Watts where he asked about how they would deal with him now being in his late 60s. Watts had brought up the de-aging effects with examples like Captain America: Civil War for Robert Downey Jr. and Captain Marvel, where Samuel L. Jackson played a young Nick Fury in a ’90s setting. It’s becoming a more frequent trait in big-budget films to help actors look several years younger, with another key example being most of the principal cast in Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman. With Molina confirming that his Doctor Octopus will look like he did in Spider-Man 2, that in itself confirms an even more significant plot point for his return in Spider-Man: No Way Home.

2004’s Spider-Man 2 had Otto starting out as a well-mannered scientist who was a mentor to Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire). When an experiment went wrong, it caused Otto to have the arms fused to him and killed his wife.
Mentally shaken and blaming Spider-Man for it, Otto went on the attack as Doctor Octopus in some thrilling fights.
The movie’s ending had Peter defeat Otto just as a powerful reactor he was building was about to explode. Realizing how wrong he’d been, Otto sacrificed himself to crash the reactor into the New York river, seemingly drowning.
When revealing the news of his casting to Variety, Molina addressed the secrecy around the role, which he laughed wasn’t that secret.
“When we were shooting it, we were all under orders not to talk about it, because it was supposed to be some great big secret. But, you know, it’s all over the internet. I actually described myself as the worst kept secret in Hollywood!”
Molina also brought up his concern to No Way Home director John Watts on how he’s nearly two decades older than he was when he played Otto in Spider-Man 2. Watts responded by pointing out the deaging CGI used on Robert Downey Jr for Civil War and Samuel L. Jackson for Captain Marvel.
Molina is the second actor to reprise a role from the Raimi trilogy in the MCU. The post-credits scene for Spider-Man: Far From Home had J.K. Simmons returning as J. Jonah Jameson, helping to expose Peter’s true identity to the world.
