‘Arkham Asylum’ (TBD)

Just before ‘The Batman’ came out, a word about a potential spin-off based on the Gotham PD came out as well. It was supposed to be based on Sidney Lumet’s ‘Prince of the City’ storyline that talks about Bruce Wayne’s first year as the ‘Caped Crusader.’

The project would focus on a corrupt cop in the Gotham PD, as well as the life inside the Arkham Asylum. However, the Gotham PD project was shelved, but another series that is actually in development is a series completely focusing on Arkham.

“It’s like a horror movie or a haunted house that is Arkham.” – said Matt Reeves, the director, and producer of ‘The Batman’ and its upcoming spin-offs, and we’re all in for it!

The unnamed Superman film, written by Ta-Nehisi Coates, will have a proud Black who is representing Superman, although still not definitely like Clark Kent. The film is a reboot that aims to resurrect the Superman mythos. The film will feature a Black Superman for the very first occasion on the giant screen; while Warner Bros decides the further update, let us sit back and wait!

The long, contentious history behind 2022’s The Batman didn’t leave much room for hope: As one of those movies that got bounced from team to team for years, changing shape at every bounce, it looked like a project that was destined to be driven more by market calculation than by a specific vision. But director and co-writer Matt Reeves found an effective take on the Dark Knight that resonated with audiences and landed solidly at the box office, and DC immediately greenlit a sequel, again with Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader. No plot details are clear yet, though Pattinson and Reeves have been blue-skying about a lot of things they’d like to do: The Court of Owls storyline, maybe? Mr. Freeze? Calendar Man, for god’s sake?

This particular film won’t be a part of the main DCU but rather one of the projects existing under the DC Elseworlds banner.

Filming was supposed to commence in July 2020 with Oscar-nominated Joker cinematographer Lawrence Sher working as the DP, but now everything appears hazy due to the COVID-19 pandemic situation.

‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ (TBD)

‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ is currently in development, and it’ll revolve around Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin who spent most of her life living on a fragment of Krypton that got separated from the rest of the planet as it was destroyed. She watched everything and everyone she knew and loved die while she remained alive.

“So she’s a much harsher and more f***ed up Supergirl that we’ve been used to this far.” – said Gunn when announcing the project. In January 2024, it was confirmed that Milly Alcock will be playing Supergirl in Gunn’s DCU.

As for the movie’s release date, Gunn said that the plan is to get Superman out, and then ‘two years later,’ Superwoman. We know that Supes is getting his movie in mid-2025, so we can expect this project to be delivered somewhere in 2027.

The Authority

The WildStorm imprint — founded as an independent company in 1992 and bought up by DC in 1999 — maintained its own superhero universe separate from DC’s, until DC shut it down in preparation for its characters to join the mainline DC Universe in the company’s 2011 reboot. In its day, Wildstorm published independent and creator-owned comics, alongside superhero series like Warren Ellis and Bryan Hitch’s The Authority, about a group of seven heroes with high-concept superpowers, like the Engineer, a woman with nanotech blood, and Jack Hawksmoor, a man who psychically bonds to cities. This will be the first appearance of WildStorm canon in live-action film.

A ‘Black Superman’ movie

DC announced in early 2021 that writer Ta-Nehisi Coates would reboot Superman with a movie that would put a Black man in the title role. Details have been thin regarding whether this film would tie into an existing DC comics story — for instance, whether this might be a movie outing for temporary Superman successor Steel or a complete reimagining of the character — but the film was meant to be produced by J.J. Abrams under his Bad Robot imprint. Reportedly the project is still going forward in the wake of Gunn and Safran’s new slate, but no release date has been announced.

‘The Authority’ (TBD)

James Gunn kind of made a name for himself by bringing out Marvel’s obscure group of characters – the Guardians of the Galaxy – to the forefront, making them exponentially more popular than they ever were in the comics.

I’m guessing they are ‘gunning’ (stupid pun intended) to do the same with The Authority – a group of misfit antiheroes who were actually a part of Wildstorm Comics before becoming a part of DC. Basically, they wanted to do the same thing as the Justice League – protect Earth and its people – but they never shied away from getting down and dirty to get their ‘justice.’

Honestly, this project excites me the most out of all others on this list, as I finally hope we’re getting something bloody and R-rated yet superhero-related in theaters.

Brave and the Bold

Taking its title from a silver age DC Comic, Brave and the Bold will introduce Batman’s biological son Damian to the DCU — he’s the fifth of Batman’s many Robins — with a story inspired by Grant Morrison’s interpretation of the character in the Batman and Son run of the Batman comic. This will be Damian’s first appearance in a live-action film, though the character has appeared in animated form in TV and movies. The continuity of this film will be separate from Matt Reeves’ planned The Batman trilogy; it’s meant to establish the new DCU continuity for Batman and Robin.

Black Adam

Black Adam is a film eight years in the making, and now the Rock will introduce movie audiences to the most electrifying anti-hero in blockbuster entertainment. Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson) is the dark counterpart to Shazam in the comics, but he’s making his solo movie debut with the tragic origin story of this incredibly powerful and dangerous being. Black Adam is on the same power level as Superman, so when this ancient warrior awakens in the present angry and overflowing with magical lightning, it’s the Justice Society that answers the call and tries to help him. But will Doctor Fate (Pierce Brosnan), Hawkman (Aldis Hodge), Cyclone (Quintessa Swindell), and Atom Smasher (Noah Centineo) be able to reform Black Adam, or will he convert them to dishing out his own personal brand of brutal justice?

“One of the things with the DCU is it isn’t just a story of heroes and villains and not every movie and TV show is going to be about good guy versus bad guy, giant thing from the sky comes and good guy wins,” Gunn explained. “There are black hats, white hats and gray hats. There are people that are anti-heroes, and there are people that are very questionable, like The Authority, who basically believe that you can’t fix the world in an easy manner, and they sort of take things into their own hands.”

The first DC movie release of 2022 is one of the most anticipated superhero movies in years: The Batman. Given that Ben Affleck’s Caped Crusader film never materialized, it has been about a decade since the last solo Batman flick (2012’s The Dark Knight Rises), and now hype is at an all-time high for the debut of Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne/Batman in what looks like a gritty, intense take on the Dark Knight from director Matt Reeves. Rounding out the star-studded cast is Zoe Kravitz’s Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Paul Dano’s Edward Nash/Riddler, Colin Farrel’s Oz/Penguin, Jeffrey Wright’s James Gordon, John Turturro’s Carmine Falcone, and Andy Serkis’ Alfred Pennyworth. The plot sees Batman honing his detective skills as he tries to figure out why the Riddler is targeting Gotham City’s elite, and he’s shocked to find out his personal connection to the mystery.

Todd Phillips never saw his Joker movie as anything but a singular film. But over a billion dollars at the box office and an Oscar for Best Actor (for star Joaquin Phoenix) obviously changed things. We have a few nuggets of info so far: the title is Joker: Folie à Deux (French for “shared madness”), Phoenix is returning and will co-star with Lady Gaga (who’s playing Harley Quinn), Zazie Beetz is probably returning as Arthur Fleck’s neighbor, and… it’s likely going to be a musical? Filming wrapped in early April 2023.

Waller

Gunn’s hilarious, heartfelt Suicide Squad spinoff series Peacemaker was greenlit for a second season in February 2022, but Gunn has now said he’s going to have to put that project on hold for a bit to concentrate on other things — including Waller, the previously untitled Peacemaker spinoff centered on Viola Davis as no-nonsense supervillain resource broker Amanda Waller. The character, introduced to DC’s movie continuity in David Ayer’s little-loved 2016 version of Suicide Squad (though she’s been part of the comics continuity since 1986), is one of the few elements of Ayer’s movie that was held over in Gunn’s 2021 reboot/reshuffle movie, called The Suicide Squad. She also turned up for a quick cameo in Black Adam. Now she’s getting her own show — which “features Team Peacemaker,” so it may feel like a stealth season 2, depending on who from the team winds up on the series.

‘The Batman Part II’ (October 3, 2025)

Much like ‘Joker’ (2019), ‘The Batman’ wasn’t supposed to have a sequel. However, Robert Pattinson as Batman kind of worked, and the movie was rather successful, so Matt Reeves and the team are gearing up to helm another movie – a direct sequel to 2022’s ‘The Batman.’

Much like the first film, the sequel won’t be a part of the official DCU, as the main DCU continuity is getting its own new Bruce Wayne. Still, this DC Elseworlds story will surely be a hit, bringing us something different and more psychological to the Caped Crusader. Some might find that a bit slow and boring, but it’ll undoubtedly hold quality.

The actual title for the second of Reeves’ two HBO Max The Batman spinoffs hasn’t been revealed yet, but this one is meant to be a prequel to the movie. Previously planned as a series about the workings of the Gotham police department, the series mutated in the development stage, and Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter, originally in charge of the series, departed the project. Reeves has described this series as an origin story for characters seen in Arkham in The Batman, with more of a horror movie or “haunted house” feel. The Staircase’s Antonio Campos is now the showrunner for the series.

Netflix announced in November 2022 that its live-action series Sandman, based on Neil Gaiman’s seminal horror-fantasy comic, had been greenlit for a second season. No date has been announced yet, and given the scale of the visual effects involved in the first season, it’s a fair bet that we won’t see the second season until late 2024 or early 2025 at the earliest. Given that the first season covered the arcs of the first two Sandman graphic novels, Preludes and Nocturnes and The Doll’s House (with side stories from the third volume, Dream Country), it’s a fair bet that season 2 will continue with book four, Season of Mists, the heavily foreshadowed confrontation between Morpheus (Tom Sturridge) and Lucifer (Gwendoline Christie).
