How we meet an unseen Joker in The Batman

By the end of the film, Batman has captured the Riddler, though that was the Riddler’s plan all along. The Riddler is under the impression that he and Batman share the same goal: To team up and rid Gotham of corruption. But Batman sticks to his creed: He does not kill people.
He manages to figure out that The Riddler has taken to social media to amass a violent, fringe army of disempowered men who have armed themselves to attack a mayoral candidate who preaches hope, along with her followers. It’s not an accident that these radicalized men target a prominent Black woman.
The film’s parallels to the Jan. 6 Capitol attack are eerie—in the film, as in real life, a mob planned an attack on social media and armed themselves, and specifically targeted certain legislators, most of whom were women and women of color. Director Matt Reeves tells TIME that any parallels were accidental—the script was written in 2017.

Batman and Catwoman manage to foil the attack, to the Riddler’s dismay. He begins to lament his failure in his jail cell, attracting the attention of another prisoner, The Joker. The two talk about their similarities—they both like a good joke. And to plot vengeance.
The setup suggests that the Joker doesn’t plan on taking on Batman alone. He may recruit the Riddler, the Penguin (played by an unrecognizable Colin Farrell in this film), and a whole rogue’s gallery of heroes to battle the Caped Crusader.
What is Joker: Folie à Deux about?
The big question – What on earth is this film going to be about?
While no one is entering a superhero adaptation thinking the door is closed on sequels, 2019’s Joker set up a bleak future for Gotham that’s fallen into anarchic disrepair. With it still up in the air whether Todd Phillip’s world of The Joker is set to overlap with Matt Reeves’ The Batman (although, unlikely, seeing as Barry Keoghan nabbed that cameo as the psychotic clown), this next iteration seems to be about The Joker’s other great partner: Harley Quinn.
The drip feed of Joker 2 content has been sparse and intermittent since its first announcement, maybe a bit of guerilla marketing to make us all go insane with anticipation. Still, we’ve got another clue to add to our tiny stack of playing cards, as a picture of Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck out of his full clown glam has been released. It doesn’t give much away about the still-mysterious plot, however, given that Fleck was last seen locked up in Arkham Asylum, it does allude to him at least being freed at some point. Although maybe that’s all in his head – he does have a habit of doing that.
In the still, he’s surrounded by umbrellas looking up at the sky, eyes closed as rain pours down on him. Is it too much to hope this is the lead-up to a stunning rendition of co-star Lady Gaga’s song “Rain on Me”? This is a musical after all.

The caption along with the poster on Warner Bros India’s X handle revealed that the trailer of Joker 2 will be out on April 9. This would build enough excitement for the film release due on October 4. Interestingly, the first part, Joker, released around the same time on October 2, 2019.
The Green Knight (2021)
Here is yet another creeper in the Keoghan catalog. The actor’s unnamed “Scavenger” in David Lowery’s twisted Arthurian fantasy is a small part; a character who is just one of many people Dev Patel’s deeply flawed Gawain meets on his seemingly doomed quest to discover the Green Knight’s chapel. However, Keoghan’s episodic appearance in the film is also the first illuminating test of the hero’s character. When the man-who-would-be King Arthur’s heir meets Keoghan in the aftermath of a battlefield, the rich nephew of a king wears the airs of a knight, and yet is so uncharitable to the young serf who gives him direction as to have to be shamed into offering him recompense after supposedly losing a brother in that battle.

Yet Keoghan’s Scavenger shows up again shortly afterward, as we learn he directed Gawain into a highwayman’s trap where two accomplices, both women, easily best and disarm the faux-knight. Keoghan then personally lays claim to Gawain’s great magical axe—the measly prize the main character got by entering into a veritable suicide pact with the Green Knight one year prior. Now, Keoghan would’ve screwed over Gawain no matter what, but the way in which this meek character and his compatriots can so thoroughly humiliate the film’s protagonist, leaving him begging for his life barely a few miles outside of Camelot, is the first of many examples where we find Gawain’s chivalry left wanting. Nice find, Scavenger!
Eternals (2021)
Still, lest you think Keoghan is becoming typecast, particularly in the popular realm of superhero films, he also appeared in the competition across the street’s most ambitious superhero movie from last year, Eternals. Love it or hate it, this Chloé Zhao picture was a refreshing departure from Marvel Studios formula, and one which played fast and loose with the genre’s conventions. Take Keoghan’s character Druig. Likely introduced with the intention of being a red herring for untrustworthiness due to Keoghan’s unconventional appearance, Druig is an alien immortal who has the ability to control the minds of humans by the thousands. He’s also the one to break up the Eternals’ merry team by walking out on the other Eternals instead of cooly standing by to watch our species slaughter each other with rudimentary weapons.

That’s exactly five years after the Clown Prince of Crime first danced his way to the top of the box office in Joker. At the end of that film, Arthur Fleck landed himself in Arkham Asylum after sparking riots that swept the whole of Gotham – and according to The Wrap, the sequel musical will mostly take place in the infamous hospital. With the success of Joker, it’s likely the folks at DC are hedging their bets on its follow-up, what with the string of issues the studio has had lately including the axed Batgirl and The Flash stuck in limbo.
Nobody wanted a Joker sequel aside from those who inexplicably love it, but this is a Joker musical starring the biggest pop-come-movie star in the world, folks! If you thought Gaga’s capital-M Method press tour was unhinged while she embodied an Italian murderess in House of Gucci, just wait until she’s filling the squeaky shoes of a capricious comic book clown. Imagine the accent. The accent! Of all the products to emerge out of American cinema’s perpetual sequel churn, a zany Gaga-starring musical Joker is about the best we could’ve asked for. Song one: We Live In a Society (Harley’s Version). We’ll be first in line.

Warner Bros has dropped a new poster of Todd Phillips’ upcoming musical psychological thriller Joker 2 aka Joker: Folie à Deux. The film will see Joaquin Phoenix reprise his role from the first film that released in 2019, with popstar Lady Gaga joining the cast. The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
Here might be the first movie to make Reeves consider Keoghan for the role of Joker. In director Yorgos Lanthimos’ first full English-language horror movie, The Killing of a Sacred Deer, Keoghan at first glance appears to play a tragic but disturbed lad named Martin. See, Martin’s father died on an operating table beneath the knife of a well-meaning surgeon named Dr. Steven Murphy (Colin Farrell), and the good doctor feels some sympathy and pity for the kid.
But in trying to comfort and mentor the kid, dark secrets from Dr. Murphy’s past emerge, as does Martin’s literally cursed hatred for the man—a curse that very well could take the lives of Murphy’s family, including his wife Anna (Nicole Kidman). This is about as “elevated” as an A24 horror movie can get, with its origins lying in the Greek tragedy of Iphigenia in Aulis by Euripides. And at the heart of those scholarly pretensions is Keoghan’s smug, and ultimately terrifying, smirk.

Barry Keoghan is best known for playing another comic book character, Druig in The Eternals. Though that movie was stuffed with A-list talent (including Angelina Jolie, Salma Hayek, and Harry Styles), it failed to dazzle critics or make history at the box office. While The Eternals may or may not get a sequel, and Druig may or may not return to the big screen, Keoghan proved himself a compelling comic book anti-hero and will likely make a compelling villain.
The Irish actor has big clown shoes to fill—both Phoenix and Heath Ledger won Academy Awards for playing the Joker. And legends like Jack Nicholson have previously put their stamp on the crazed character.
American Animals (2018)
Bart Layton’s followup to his groundbreaking documentary The Imposter is a curious mix of truth and fiction, dramatizing a true crime case with actors as well as using the real people alongside them. It’s the story of a group of privileged college students who decide to rob a library. The plan is so wild that it’s fascinating they could possibly ever think it would work.
The film delves into the psychology of these otherwise squeaky clean young men and what drove them to the central event. Keoghan plays Spencer, one of the two who initially fantasize about the heist, with Evan Peters as Warren. Not playing a villain for a change (or certainly not a typical one), Keoghan’s picture of Spencer is of a young man craving drama caught up in a plan so dumb it barely even seems real. An ensemble piece where Keoghan once again shines.

How The Batman and the Joker fit into the DC Entertainment Universe

The DCEU has grown complicated in recent years. In order to sort through its many parallel universes, it’s helpful to compare Warner Bros.’ production of superhero movies with Disney’s Marvel Studios.
Marvel carefully laid the foundation for movies operating on parallel timelines within a multiverse introduced in Loki and expanded upon in Spider-Man: No Way Home. When three different Spider-Men swung into action in Spider-Man: No Way Home, we understood that each Peter Parker came from a different parallel world.

Warner Bros. by contrast, has produced superhero movies that seemingly exist in several different universes without any in-film explanation. Robert Pattinson’s Batman does not live on the same earth as Ben Affleck’s Batman. Nor does Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker seem to operate in the same universe of either of those Caped Crusaders. Logic would dictate that Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman and Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, who starred together in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, might pop up in each other’s movies but never interact with the Pattinson version of Bruce Wayne. And, by extension, Keoghan’s Joker is a wholly different person than Phoenix’s Joker.
Things get even more muddled when you consider the remakes and reboots. The first Suicide Squad movie involved a cameo from Affleck’s Batman and introduced Jared Leto’s Joker. But the reboot-slash-sequel that came out last year, The Suicide Squad (note the article), picked and chose what lore to carry on from the previous movie and what to abandon. So it could conceivably still exist in the land of Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Or not.
Warner Bros. executives have explained in interviews that these characters exist on separate, parallel universe planets, Earth 1, Earth 2, Earth 3, etc. The upcoming Flash movie will reportedly unite at least some of these universes. Both Affleck’s Batman and Michael Keaton’s Batman from the 1980s are set to appear in that film.
