Sometimes the characters are more important than the story, and when showrunners can blend those two necessities together, magic is made. The Marvels is in a position to take the Captain Marvel franchise and give it a boost similar to what the Captain America franchise saw in 2014’s Winter Soldier. Here is the checklist of things that The Marvels will be doing that gave Winter Soldier such a high-ranking spot in the Infinity Saga run:
- Bring in fan-favorite characters from across the universe (Monica Rambeau and Kamala Khan)
- Be directly involved with a larger threat, and Nick Fury
- Starring a character that is on an upward trajectory after an Avengers movie (Carol Danvers)
Kang will win in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty
We already saw a big Kang Dynasty plot leak that indicated plenty of Avengers will face the evil Kang (Jonathan Majors) in Avengers 5, detailing the various teams that will emerge to fight the terrifying villain.
The new leak indicates that the Kang in Avengers 5 will be the same character from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Just as we suspected. Kang has been stuck in the Quantum Realm and will escape by the time Quantumania ends.
Kang will move between timelines to conquer them, supposedly leaving Earth-616 for last. Kang Dynasty will be a movie about Kang, in the same way Infinity War was about Thanos. But this villain won’t be alone. Kang will recruit Kang variants from other realities to help him fight the Avengers.
We’ll meet Nathanial Richards, who is one version of Kang, and we’ll watch Kang The Conqueror beat the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Just like we saw with Thanos in Infinity War, the Avengers will lose once again.
The plot leak says that the first wave of Avengers will include the expected characters. Captain America (Anthony Mackie), Shang-Chi (Sim Liu), Black Panther (Letitia Wright), and others. But Kang will defeat them all by the end of Kang Dynasty. This will force the Avengers to recruit other heroes for the fight in Secret Wars.

The Ultimates
Talk about batting practice, this is an easy one for Feige and the crew. They can’t possibly drop the ball here. Then again, there was Thor: Love and Thunder, so scratch that last part. Maybe they won’t drop the ball.
The easiest solution for anything is the Multiverse. Marvel could create a simple dimension plotline that snatches the original Avengers from another reality. No fuss, no muss, just grab up Black Widow, Iron Man, and Cap from another world, and boom! we’re in business. Actually, if Marvel were to do that, there’s a name for that specific group that would perfectly align with Secret Wars: the Ultimates.
Created for Marvel’s Ultimate line of comics from the early 2000s, these were the Avengers from Earth-1610. In its infant stages, the Ultimate Universe was intended to be a little more gritty and grounded than its Marvel-616 counterparts. The Ultimates were a government-sponsored black ops team of superheroes. For the most part, they’re the same classic Avengers, but with more attitude. This Captain America has no problem using a gun, which was something rarely seen from the Marvel-616 comics.
Where they fit into Secret Wars is interesting. During the 2015 SW revival, the Ultimate Universe and the Marvel Universe were undergoing an incursion, and the two worlds collided. That’s how Miles Morales ended up in the Marvel-616 in the first place. The Ultimates, however, did not survive the trip, and they were lost to the void of space. It just so happens that Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness introduced the incursion concept, which has raised a few eyebrows in light of the Secret Wars title reveal.
Could the incursion be an indication to where Avengers: Secret Wars is headed? That could be one way Marvel Studios brings its original Avengers squad back into the fold, possibly as the Ultimates. It also would allow for some alternate casting choices, like the much-rumored Tom Cruise Iron Man variant. As much fun as that would be, I don’t see Feige going that route, at least not at first. That’s where Kang fits into the puzzle.

Potential Recasting and Storyline Changes
Marvel could opt to recast the role of Kang, introducing a new actor to take on the mantle. The MCU has previously seen major characters recast, such as Bruce Banner/The Hulk and Rhodey/War Machine. Given the nature of Kang’s character, who exists in multiple variants across the multiverse, a recasting could be seamlessly integrated into the storyline.
Exploring Alternative Villains
Alternatively, Marvel might choose to introduce a new primary antagonist for the upcoming Avengers film. Rumours suggest that the studio might lean towards Doctor Doom as the next significant villain. This shift would not only refresh the MCU’s narrative but also excite fans eager to see a cinematic rendition of Doctor Doom done justice.
Captain America: New World Order

Much like The Marvels, Captain America: New World Order is the highlight project for what many assume will be one of the faces of the franchise moving forward, Sam Wilson’s Captain America. «Who are the Avengers?» is one of the main themes of Phase 4. New World Order could be in a great spot to answer that question.
After the in-depth character study that is The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Sam Wilson is ready to hit the ground running in his big screen leading man debut and build a new team of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Cap 4 could play as another Avengers-lite movie with a ton of crossover, while also establishing the new leader of Marvel’s main supergroup.

Loki Season 2

Loki Season 2 is in an interesting spot. Season 1 arguably did more than any Phase 4 project to set up what will eventually be the climax of the Multiverse Saga. After the events of WandaVision, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, Season 2 is in a similar position in Phase 5 as it is being looked at to explain even more about Kang.
Loki is the character that has the hardest time fitting in with Earth-616, but that does not mean he isn’t in line to play a huge role. The biggest question ahead of Season 2 is how much of Jonathan Major’s Kang can be expected. If Kang is running his own TVA, controlling the flow of time, and is front and center in the series, Loki Season 2 is certainly one of the most crucial pieces of the Multiverse Saga’s puzzle.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

Importance can be defined in a number of ways and virtually every one of them applies to the Black Panther sequel, Wakanda Forever. While the characters in the movie will be dealing with the loss of their King T’Challa, fans will be sharing in that grief and celebration of life with the loss of Chadwick Boseman. Along with that emotional weight, director Ryan Coogler and his team are rumored to also be contributing to the overarching MCU in a major way.
It is being rumored that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever could introduce Doctor Victor Von Doom, one of the most impactful villains in the Marvel Universe. While Doom’s role in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty is yet to be determined, his role in the next Avengers film, Secret Wars, is all but a lock to be vital. If Doom appears in Wakanda Forever, it could retroactively be the debut of the REAL big bad of The Multiverse Saga.

Time travel and the Multiverse
Although the full schedule for the remainder of Phase Four and all of Phase Five were revealed at SDCC, the only Phase Six projects made public are the upcoming Avengers films. Both slated for 2025, Marvel has three years to lead fans into The Multiverse Saga’s epic finales, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars, and there will be more tie-in movies and series announced long before we get there.
By way of the single most convenient plot device ever created, the Multiverse, positively anything can happen in the MCU. Any character, any plotline, and any alternate reality to ever grace the pages of a Marvel comic are fair game. That also gives the Marvel Studios braintrust a seemingly bottomless well of ideas from which to dip its creative bucket. More importantly, it means that no character is truly gone.
If there is one unofficial rule in superhero comics, it’s that death means nothing. It’s more like a vacation than the actual end, at least for major characters. Over the past six decades of Marvel Comics, two of the most resonating death scenes remain those of Gwen Stacy and the X-Men’s Jean Grey. Famously, Gwen died in the Green Goblin’s most heinous plot back in 1973, causing Spider-Man to unintentionally kill her when the web recoil broke her neck. Seven years later, Chris Claremont wrote Jean off during the Phoenix Saga.
Despite those emotional and perfect death scenes, Marvel wouldn’t let them rest in peace. Jean returned six years later. Since then, she’s died and been reborn more times than that pesky weed in your rose bushes. Not even Gwen Stacy was immune as Marvel has resurrected her in multiple forms with increasingly complicated explanations.
The point is, Marvel Comics has never had an issue with pulling the Lazarus routine. At this point, virtually every major character in the publisher’s history has died and returned at least once if not several times. No matter who it is, whenever comic fans see the words “death of” in the headline, they know it won’t be permanent. Except for Uncle Ben and Gwen’s dad, Captain George Stacy, for some reason.
All that being said, it would be no stretch for Marvel Studios to crack open the comics’ playbook and write up an old fashioned triumphant resurrection storyline. Whether we all hear it coming a mile away or not, seeing RDJ and Johansson stand together one more time with that awe-inspiring Avengers theme playing? Get the tissues ready.

With a New Avengers team presumably on the way, there is also a team of rogues that could prove to be a great Phase-ending battle for them. Thunderbolts has been teased and sprinkled throughout Phase 4, with major players like Yelena Belova and John Walker stealing scenes of their respective projects. With Julia Louis-Dreyfus’s Valentina Allegra de Fontaine seemingly collecting villains, this is set to be the major crossover event of Phase 5.
Kang is shaping up to be a formidable foe all on his own, but what if he needs lackeys? Thunderbolts should pave the way for a lower-level threat for the new team of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to fend off against before their mettle is truly tested in Avengers: The Kang Dynasty.
Secret Invasion

Secret Invasion is the first-ever «crossover event» to take place on Disney+. That distinction alone is enough for this series to become one of the most important pieces in the MCU puzzle. While it will tackle one of the most impactful storylines in Marvel Comics history, the return of Nick Fury can’t be understated.
While Secret Invasion may not influence Avengers 5 directly, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are currently scattered to the winds, leaving Earth without a concrete team of supers. Nick Fury could be the key to assembling the MCU’s next supergroup as he did all the way back at the start of the Infinity Saga.
