When Evil Lurks is a 2023 Argentine supernatural psychological horror film, written and directed by Demián Rugna (Satanic Hispanics, Terrified).
An international co-production of Argentina and the United States, it is available to stream on Shudder from 27th October 2023.
“Uriel is dying! He is swollen, he is a puss ball. Bring the Mayor! Give me the phone, call him!”
In rural Argentina, brothers Pedro (Ezequiel Rodríguez – Legions, La Flor) and Jimi (Demián Salomón – Into the Abyss) hear gunshots coming from the forest and head out to investigate. They make a grisly discovery, a dismembered body, with a box of equipment and note indicating that his destination was their neighbour Maria Elena. 
When they head over there, they make a worse discovery, her son Uriel is a Rotten one, possessed by a demon looking to be born.
He must be killed by a professional, but unfortunately, he lies dead in the forest. They go to neighbour Ruiz (Luis Ziembrowski – The Rotten Link), who insists that they should move him, against the advice of pretty much everyone. With the help of the brothers, the body is moved 300km away, but they lose it somewhere along the way. Not their problem anymore, they head back to town.
The next morning, Jimena (Desirée Salgueiro – Still Life), the wife of Ruiz, discovers that one of their goats is possessed. When he shoots it against her advice, she takes an axe first to him and then to her own face. It looks like evil may be afoot. With no regard for the rules or common sense, Jimi and Pedro attempt to contain the situation, leaving a trail of chaos in their wake.
“Mr Ruiz, don’t shoot, please. You don’t kill the evil like that, it will be for worse…It will take our bodies. It will take our souls.”
When Evil Lurks is a very well executed horror film with a number of genuinely shocking moments. Some of them I could hardly believe I was seeing, even though you know where they are going with it.
It builds the tension very well, and the combination of an incessantly ringing phone and an autistic child drives you almost as insane as the poor hapless brothers. There is no shortage of blood and gore either, this one is definitely not for the faint hearted, it made me wince a few times and it’s very graphic.
Demián Rugna was going for the shock factor with this one and he landed it spot on. It’s brutal, it’s brilliant and just remember, if the Yazurlo brothers offer to help you with something, just say no.

What happens at the end?
When Evil Lurks isn’t your typical zombie movie. It’s more complex than that. People who are possessed need to have the entity inside them excised in a certain manner — simply shooting them in the head isn’t going to cut it. All of this leads Pedro and his family to a confrontation in a Children of the Corn-style school filled with silent, creepy kids, all of whom are being manipulated by the demon to help protect it from destruction.
Long story short? The monster wins. Despite the best efforts of Pedro and co., they fail to destroy the evil and a new demon is released into the world.
There’s something going on with Jair.

How Does Pedro Unintentionally Spread The Evil?
Among the many rules to avoid evil is also a specific one, which mentions that one must leave every possession of theirs behind when escaping from the infected place. Pedro and Jaime follow this, as they do not take anything from their house while leaving, but unbeknownst to them, the evil has already contaminated their clothes. Reaching the town, Pedro goes to his ex-wife Sabrina’s house in order to save her and their children. Although the woman is now married to a different man, Pedro wants to protect all of them from the spreading evil, so he urges them to leave the house and come with him. Sabrina and her husband are obviously shocked at this sudden emergence, especially when Pedro strips all his clothes and asks for some fresh ones.
Pedro suspects that his clothes are also dangerous, but before he destroys them, the family dog starts to smell them. Surely enough, the dog now gets possessed and attacks Sabrina’s daughter from her second marriage. In response, her husband shoots the dog with his gun, and like earlier, this easily makes the evil take him into possession. The husband runs his car into Sabrina and their daughter and kills them, along with ending his own life. Pedro witnesses all of this as he frantically takes his two sons, Santi and Jair, away from the place. Meeting up with Jaime, who has picked up their mother, Pedro intends to drive as far away from the town as they can. However, the mother soon receives a call from Sabrina’s number, and when Pedro picks it up, he is told by the possessed ex-wife that she will come to fetch her children by any means.
Some details about the family and their past are also revealed in this segment, starting with the fact that Pedro and Sabrina had gone through a messy separation. Their firstborn son, Jair, is autistic and had been born in this unfortunate state, following which Pedro had wanted to abandon and kill him. He had apparently once switched off the machinery that supported Jair’s life during his childhood, wanting to end his life, but this act had been caught by the rest of the family. It was also because of this reason that the man fell out with Sabrina, and the two ended their marriage. Both of them blamed the other for Jair’s condition, and Sabrina had started having affairs with other men. Towards the end of When Evil Lurks, it is also hinted that Sabrina even had an affair with her own brother-in-law, Jaime.

No one is safe in Rugna’s world
The tale that follows is anything but predictable. The film’s pulse is intense and relentless, with every frame meticulously designed to suffocate the audience with a palpable sense of unease, only to then pull the rug with utter absurdity. There are clear parallels to the pandemic; when Pedro rounds up his family to run for the hills, we repeatedly hear how these incidents tend to spread “in the city.” But the allegory is so subtle that it doesn’t feel overbearing or patronizing.
Though it takes a minute to heat up, this time is needed to deliver its mythology and establish the characters’ fear, which in turn establishes our own fear. We know something bad is coming before it’s even happened, and when it gets going, it doesn’t let up. There’s festering evil at every corner, and unlike mainstream horror that might treat its most vulnerable with some sympathy, in Rugna’s sick and twisted universe, no one is safe.
This is one of many reasons When Evil Lurks is not for the faint-hearted. Barring a few moments where VFX slightly mars the authenticity, visually, the gore is perfect, delivering a visceral experience and a few sequences where even the most hardened horror fans’ jaws will be on the floor. There are also moments of genuine beauty, particularly between Pedro and Jimmy, as well as their affection towards Pedro’s autistic son. They’re not often, but enough to raise the stakes and for audiences to understand their motivations.
Rugna doesn’t patronize the audience. There are definite ground rules in this new form of possession, but these are drip-fed through various characters, allowing them to land naturally. The same goes for the trauma of Pedro’s past. The only criticism is that the crescendo takes a turn for the baffling and it gets a bit incoherent. But that’s okay. Sometimes horror isn’t about wrapping up every loose end neatly; it’s about the lingering sense of unease, and an experience that will ignite fervent debates and contemplation long after the credits roll.

участники событий — погибли. Не исключено, что их души попали в те самые темные
другие измерения. В частности Розенток стал призраком и сразу же явился в наш
мир, поглазеть, что же произошло. Фунес же сделал единственно верное, что можно
было сделать вообще. Сжег дома, а сам, видимо, скрылся. Как объяснить свой
поступок и пропажу трех людей начальству?

при этом вряд ли закрылся, но хотя бы людей поблизости не будет. Остался только
один вопрос — почему переход между мирами вдруг открылся? На это, увы, ответа
нет
Да собственно, это и не важно. Если мы толком не понимаем механизм
происходящего, как понять, что именно запустило это механизм?
Хотя в фильме есть такой крохотный намек, что может быть, всего этого не было, а Хуан сам убил свою жену? Но нет, летящий стул вполне развенчивает эти подозрения. Ну что сказать, иногда люди становятся невольными участниками таких необъяснимых событий. А так как все, что связано с иномирьем, совершенно не изучено, то получается вот такое вот кино, которое я с удовольствием всем рекомендую смотреть.

Later on, Jaime hits a possessed Sabrina with his car.

- Children Are Innocent: Played With, as Mirta explains that «Evil is drawn to children, and children are drawn to evil.»
- Corrupt Politician: The reason for the the police being useless is chalked up to the Mayor wanting a way to drive Ruiz and the residents of his farmland away, so that he could sell it off to the highest bidder afterward. It’s also hinted that he may have some involvement with the murder of the Cleaner sent to deal with Uriel in furtherance of this goal.
- Creepy Child: Little Vicky stands out. After becoming possessed, she gleefully tells her mother that her father is about to drive into them.
- Death of a Child: All of the children we see either die or are possessed.
- Definitely Just a Cold: Mirta, an expert in possession, tries to warn Jaime that Jair is possessed. Jaime dismisses it as symptoms of Jair’s autism — until he realizes that Jair’s wrists are bent painfully out of shape.
- Demonic Possession: This flavour of it acts like an infection, and is dubbed «The Rotten». The setting hints at this being a rare but well-established phenomena, as towns have strict protocols on what to do in the event of a Rotten appearing.
- Devil, but No God: Demons appear to be free to rampage with no fear of divine intervention. It’s indicated the church’s influence has collapsed as a result of its impotence in the face of the demonic threat.
- Disability Immunity: For some reason the demons have great trouble with autistic individuals. Jair spends hours possessed before the demon works out how to control his body, and when it does, it can’t act like him at all and gives the game away instantly.
- Does This Remind You of Anything?: The contaminated brothers leaving their land against advice and bringing their family members into contact with the demonic infection might bring to mind the people who broke lockdown restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Downer Ending:
- Failure Hero: While neither of the brothers are successful Pedro stands out for
- Foreshadowing: The possessed Jair drapes a lambskin rug over himself
- Gruesome Goat: One of Ruiz’ goats becomes infected, and taunts him into shooting it to spread the infection further.
- Hellhound: Sabrina’s family dog, Roger, becomes this after sniffing around Pedro’s contaminated clothes.
- I’m a Humanitarian: Being possessed seems to cause a hankering for human flesh, among other symptoms.
- Mister Seahorse: The possessed Uriel is spoken of as being pregnant with a demon child.
- Offing the Offspring: The possessed Sabrina kidnaps her youngest son, Santino,
- Papa Wolf: Pedro’s first priority once it is clear the demons have been let loose is to save his children.
- Police Are Useless: The Yazurlo brothers appeal to the local police for help, but they dismiss it as «not their problem.» They don’t even seem to care about an unexplained dismembered body on the possessed man’s land, nor the unexplained gunshots heard the night before. As mentioned above, it’s likely the mayor is paying them off to ignore the problem until the locals are driven out.
- Strike Me Down with All of Your Hatred!: The demons repeatedly goad people into killing them, as this only kills one host but lets them spread more easily. .
- Trauma Conga Line: Pedro has to deal with losing his ex-wife,
- Would Hurt a Child: The demons have no qualms about possessing or harming children.
What Will Happen Next in the Movie?
Evil Lurks is a horror movie about a group of friends who go on a camping trip in the woods, unaware that a serial killer is on the loose. The killer wears a human skin mask and uses various weapons to torture and murder his victims. The friends soon realize that they are not alone and that they have to fight for their survival.
The movie is a tribute to the slasher genre, referencing classics like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween, and Friday the 13th. It also explores themes of fear, trust, and betrayal among the friends as they discover that one may be working with the killer. - После просмотра вы начнете бояться собственной раковины, а также соседей, делающих ремонт (шучу!).
Наконец, есть и мораль: пользуйтесь бутилированной водой! Так как диарея – далеко не худшее, что можно подхватить, попив воды из-под крана. По крайней мере, в Аргентине. Надеюсь, у нас с этим получше.

A horror film with relatable fallibility
One of the aspects that makes When Evil Lurks as effective as it is is the realism of its lead characters. Pedro, no matter what, seeks to protect his family unit. His wife has a restraining order against him for his erratic behavior, but he still attempts to rescue everyone from the encroaching shadow that looms. In another film, this might be frustrating. Ezequiel Rodríguez radiates such a sense of urgency that one can’t even be bothered to question his motives. We have seen the evil that Pedro has seen, and we know what it can do.
On the other hand, Demián Salomón as Jimmy is a twitchy, ready-to-pull-the-trigger type who jumps at the latest sign of unease. He’s like if you handed a nervous person who’s seen way too many horror films a gun. In another film, these two characters would be incredibly frustrating, but due to the “all is lost, save what you can” atmosphere of When Evil Lurks, it’s almost impossible not to just go ahead for the ride, never questioning for a second if you’d act any differently than these characters.
When Evil Lurks gives us grim overload
It must be pointed out that When Evil Lurks isn’t for everyone. Demián Rugna maintains an atmosphere that is downright oppressive. Several taboos are broken. Men, women, children, and animals are all free game here, dispatched with reckless abandon. It’s entirely fair to hear that, get disgusted, and not be remotely interested in checking out the film.
For those who feel they’re equipped for it When Evil Lurks defiantly brings to life a vision of pure evil unlike any other seen before. It never stops, features full commitment from everyone involved, and keeps coming up with new ways to mess with the sanity of the audience. Not in a long time has horror felt so dangerous.
If you’re looking for an unrelenting descent into Hell, then beware of the temptation of seeing When Evil Lurks this Friday in limited theatrical release or later this month on Shudder. It’s an experience you can’t take back.

женщина моет на кухне посуду и вдруг слышит из раковины какие-то звуки и даже
голоса. Когда муж возвращается домой, она рассказывает об этом странном
происшествии. Но Хуан утверждает, что это просто старые трубы, а может сосед
Вальтер, который в последнее время постоянно что-то ремонтирует. Жена с ним не
соглашается, но Клара дико напугана, ведь голоса говорили, что убьют ее.
Посреди ночи, а точнее в 5 утра женщина идет в туалет, а уже сам герой просыпается от приглушенных звуков. Он идет к соседу разбираться, но тот даже не открывает двери. Когда же Хуан возвращается домой, то обнаруживает ужасную картину. Его жену Клару некая невидимая сила бросает в ванной комнате как куклу об стены. На мольбу и просьбы остановиться Клара не реагирует и, естественно, она погибает.

Сразу первая
странность — он что совсем слепой и не понимал, что она делает это с собой не
сама? Зачем ее-то просить остановиться? Ну да ладно, проехали. Увы, мужчину задерживают
по подозрению в убийстве собственной жены. Держат в заключении, но пока не
осуждают.
В то же время на встречу с Хуаном приходят какие-то странные люди. Они утверждают, что верят ему. Ведь несколько лет назад нечто подобное уже произошло в Америке. Но чтобы доказать полную невиновность, Хуан должен вспомнить, что было странного в последние две недели. И мужчина вспоминает, что тот самый сосед Вальтер вел себя слишком странно, он постоянно что-то ремонтировал в своем доме.

Что для одного радость, для другого жуть
Самое смешное,
что Розенток увидев сущность совсем не пугается. Напротив, он приходит в
восторг, а Фунес, естественно, в панике бежит. Почему? Потому, что Розенток
искал это и как любой исследователь радуется своей находке.
Ведь он
нашел точку соприкосновения тьмы и света, точку соединения этого и другого
мира. Фунес же является просто сторонним наблюдателем, которому дела нет до
всяких там призраков. Потому для него совсем не радость, а это жуть жуткая.
После этого события Мора Албрек настоятельно советует перепуганному комиссару не верить всему, что он видит и вымыть, наконец, руки от крови, ибо она притягивает сущностей. Последнее совершенно правильно. Кровь – не совсем простая жидкость в нашем теле. Вот почему всего капля крови обычно запускает в кино какое-нибудь зло.
