Succession Season 4 Episode 4 Recap
The fourth episode, titled ‘Honeymoon States,’ opens in the aftermath of Logan Roy’s death as his friends and family deal with the loss. We follow Kendall as he recomposes himself, likely after a heavy crying session, grieving his father. Kendall gets ready and arrives at Logan’s apartment, where Roman and Shiv are already waiting for him. The Roys are holding a memorial service for Logan, and most of the executives from Waystar RoyCo are present to pay their respects. Kendall is surprised to see Marcia Roy at the house, as her marriage with Logan was on the rocks until Logan’s death. Nonetheless, Marcia assures him that she and Logan are close.

Kendall does not buy Marcia’s story and reunites with his siblings. They joke about Logan and Marcia’s marriage for a moment before checking up on each other. Kendall and Shiv are still experiencing stages of grief, while Roman states he thought about Logan’s death so much that he has practically pre-grieved. However, assuming Roman was closest to Logan, he is likely still in denial about his father’s death. Nonetheless, the siblings are forced to get their act together when Lukas Matsson calls to discuss the terms of Waystar’s sale to GoJo.
However, when the siblings drop the call, Matsson refuses to talk to them. Instead, they receive an ultimatum to choose an interim CEO so that the deal can be finalized soon. Elsewhere, the Old Guard, comprising Gerri, Frank, Tom, and Karl, discuss the choices for an interim CEO. They refuse to consider Logan’s children, and Gerri and Karl will likely be favorites among the board leaders. A meeting is scheduled for the board members to pick the CEO later in the day. However, matters become complicated after Frank discovers a letter Logan wrote that appoints Kendall as his successor.
Karl suggests destroying the letter, but Gerri wants to tell the children about it. Kendall, Shiv, and Roman are called into a room where they are told about the letter and Logan choosing Kendall. However, they speculate that the letter is from roughly four years ago, and Kendall’s name is either underlined or struck out. Moreover, the letter was never presented to Logan’s lawyers, making it non-legally binding. The revelation causes bickering among the siblings.
Elsewhere, Connor tries to buy Logan’s house from Marcia, who gladly sells it for the right price. On the other hand, Shiv and Roman are displeased with Kendall as he tries to pitch himself as the interim CEO. Meanwhile, Tom realizes that Logan’s death means he has no pull within the company and tries to suck up to Kendall, Roman, and Shiv despite his impending divorce from her. Meanwhile, Kendall convinces Stewy to back him during the board vote for the CEO. However, Kendall must convince his siblings to keep the company’s control in the family until the sale.

What Does the Future Hold for the Roys?
For his part, Armstrong has strong thoughts about what happens next for Roman, Shiv and Kendall, and the rest of the Succession cast.
“They don’t end,” he says about the characters and their stories. “They will carry on. But it’s where this show loses interest in them because they’ve lost what they wanted, which was to succeed, this prize their father held out.”
He says Roman’s final scene set in a bar speaks to how “he could have easily been a playboy jerk with some slightly nasty instincts and some quite funny jokes. He could’ve stayed in a bar, being that guy and this has been a bit of a detour in his life.”

For Shiv, Armstrong thinks she’s in “a rather terrifying, frozen, emotionally barren place,” following her big move to back Tom. Tom’s win was carved out long ago, according to Armstrong: “That’s something I thought was the right ending for quite a while now. Even though he’s not the most powerful monarch you’ll ever meet. His power comes from Matsson. Those figures who drift upward and make themselves amenable to powerful people are around.” Armstrong believes Tom and Shiv will struggle to progress given all the cards they’ve laid out on the table: “There’s a lot of that game to play out, but that’s where we leave it.”
And then there’s Ken, the number one boy. Is his final look out at the water and the setting sun a sign that he’s going to turn a new page, and start building his “own pile” separate from his father? That’s an optimistic way to look at things, and Armstrong’s not looking at Kendall’s ending optimistically.
“This will never stop being the central event of his life,” says the creator. “Maybe he could go on and start a company or do a thing, but the chances of him achieving the sort of corporate status his dad achieved are very low. I think that will mark his whole life.”
For his own part, Armstrong deeply feels Succession will mark his whole creative life. “I don’t think I’ll be able to write anything as good as this again,” he says. “It feels really scary and foolish, but with that sense that it must end, so that’s what I guess I cling onto.”

Fans got to see Logan Roy’s Hamptons home in the beginning of season two. The actual home is the 1960 Henry Ford Estate in Mecox Bay, Southampton, chosen to signify Logan’s «new money» sensibilities, reports The show’s production designer Stephen Carter told the outlet: “Given the age of the character, he would have been forming his impressions of what trendy style would be in the sixties.”

New Mexico
The season one episode «Austerlitz» sees the whole Roy clan head to Connor Roy’s sprawling New Mexico estate for a publicized family therapy session. Playing the part of the southwestern home is Rancho Alegre, a Santa Fe private house/museum with panoramic views of the Ortiz and Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
The Succession New Mexico ranch has 11 bedrooms, a wine cellar, a media room, and is sat on 190 acres—and amazingly, you can actually stay there yourself (if you’ve got the cash, of course). The home can be booked for private stays—with seven nights minimum booking preferred), or private events.
Kendall Is Alive
When Kendall did resurface onscreen, audiences were treated to perhaps the most brittle iteration of Kendall in the history of Succession. Pale and limping along the Tuscan gravel, Kendall rejoined his siblings and downplayed his near-drowning the morning after, blaming it on “one too many limoncellos.” Despite the Roy siblings’ constant, knife-twisting bickering, Shiv (Sarah Snook), Roman (Kieran Culkin), and Connor (Alan Ruck) still made an attempt to appeal to Kendall’s vulnerability in the form of an intervention. Unsurprisingly, Kendall shut down his siblings’ shaky attempts at earnest concern. “I feel like everything I’ve done has been with good intentions,” he said. “I do feel like this is about all of your sh*t more than me.”

The Deal With Lukas Mattson
Logan’s heart gave out when the team was heading to Sweden to meet Lukas Mattson to discuss the terms of the Waystar sale, and now the question is, will the Swedish genius be interested in buying such a haphazard company with its captain gone? Of course, Waystar’s content streaming app had amazing content to offer, which might be a motivation for Mattson to take over the failing organization, and he might actually get it for a bargain. With the collapsing rate of shares and no absolute leader to guide Waystar through such a situation, the scraps Mattson throws in to purchase the organization might be the only saving grace the dying company might hope for. As bad as Logan was as a father or a husband, he was a shrewd businessman with tremendous market acumen. His children, Ken and Shiv in particular, become such fragile messes upon hearing about their dad’s death that they can’t make a single straight decision. Giving them the reins of this suffering organization can only mean even further humiliation for the children as well as Waystar. Unless Mattson steps in now, Waystar might become non-functional within the year.
Just two episodes ago, Ken, Shiv, and Rome had presented a united front and planned to buy their father’s biggest object of desire, Pierce Media, and were ready to use the money they’d receive from Waystar’s sale. With Logan dead, if Mattson backs out of his decision to buy the organization, not only will the children not get the billions they were promised for their shares, but also their plans to purchase PGM will have to be bade farewell for good. Thus, it’s extremely necessary that the younger Roys convince Mattson to purchase the dying company if they want to have a payday at the end of this fiasco. The trailer for next week’s episode shows Mattson will be present with the children, and the group will be partying, but it can’t be said for certain what plans the Swede might be devising behind his cold eyes.

Who Is Still With Waystar Royco After Succession’s Ending
With Tom and Lukas Matsson in control of Waystar Royco, some serious shakeups are expected after Succession‘s ending. Tom tells Greg that Frank and Karl are out, meaning that their time at Waystar Royco is short. Tom is also incredibly dismissive of Hugo, potentially firing him due to his collusion with Kendall.
Tom clearly states that Greg is safe at the company, as well as Shiv Roy. On top of that, Tom says that he wants to talk with Gerri and Karolina, meaning that they have a good chance of sticking around. Kendall and Roman will probably have the chance to stay at Waystar in smaller roles, but it isn’t known if they will accept. Much like Lukas Matsson planned at the beginning of Succession season 4, it seems that most of Waystar’s legacy staff is out while the younger staff will remain in.

The most obvious choice, at least for the time being, is Logan himself, who still seems to be his same snarky and arrogant self despite all of his health issues. Ruthless and guided by ego, his incessant desire to win makes him the most driven and determined of the bunch. He accepts that the world is changing from print newspapers and local news stations to mobile apps and streaming, yet he believes Waystar Royco can and will be the last man standing in traditional media. Nevertheless, Logan will still need fresh, young eyes in his corner, whether he’s at the helm or not.

Tom’s Big Betrayal
One question remained however: just how did Logan know to rework the supermajority clause ahead of his children’s arrival? Enter Tom Wambsgans (Matthew Macfadyen), the man who shivved his wife. Tom spent most of Season 3 fretting about a possible stint in prison, only to have covertly spent the final third of the season sidling up to Logan. The clues were all there: His deteriorating relationship with Shiv, their loveless, sexless marriage, and Shiv revealing her master contingency plans to Tom just before an unfortunate foray into pillowtalk. Tom’s motivation to turn on his wife and brothers-in-law serves as the cherry atop the sickening sundae that was the Season 3 finale. Tom even looped Greg (Nicholas Braun) in on his master plan, promising an escape from the “neverending middle.” Ultimately Tom’s retelling of the Nero and Sporus fable from Episode 4 proved to be foreshadowing, given that Tom did figuratively murder his wife and abscond with his neutered underling. We’ll see how all this turns out in Season 4!

Why Shiv Really Voted For The Deal (& Against Kendall)
After finding out that she was being replaced, Shiv almost turned on Matsson and voted against the deal. However, she voted for the deal in the end, meaning that she also voted against Kendall controlling the company. Shiv knew that Kendall couldn’t handle Waystar Royco, with him clearly not being suited for the job. Shiv also knew that, due to their past conflicts, Kendall probably would have pushed her out of the company at their first impasse. Shiv also selfishly knew that, since Tom was set to be the CEO, she would still have a major hand in Waystar Royco if the deal went through, leading to her vote.
“It’s Always Been a Tragedy”
In the official “Succession: Controlling the Narrative” feature after the episode, Armstrong and Mylod spoke more about ending the show the way they did, and ending the show, full stop.
“It feels very perverse to end it,” says Armstrong. “I love this cast, I love working with the crew, my fellow writers, I’ve had some of the happiest times of my career in this writers room, working with them. I’m quite a sort of softie really. I like the family vibe we have on this show and the relationships.”
With that said, he adds: “One of the few things I’m able to be really tough about is protecting the show and its integrity. The more and more we discussed it in the room, the more and more clear it became to me that this sequence of Logan’s death, the competition over whether to sell or not, intersecting with an election, and his funeral ended with the show ending. Once that became clear, I didn’t really have any doubts. I had lots of emotional sadness, but it felt like, ‘OK, this is how this show goes.’”
According to Mylod, Succession has “always been a tragedy,” a notion he hoped to highlight in the portion of the finale set in Barbados, which is where production ended. He points to the scene in which the siblings pour a celebratory smoothie crown on Kendall’s head the night before his alleged appointment. Mylod says the scene has “a sense of recaptured innocence, kids being kids.
“Every moment of hope like that is so cruel,” he adds, “because you’re just waiting for that shoe to drop and waiting for their essential natures to be exposed and to break your heart again.”
