Фильм «Схватка»
Все эти три типа героев практически в рафинированном виде показаны в замечательном фильме «Схватка» 1995 года.
Здесь лейтенант полиции Винсент Ханна, возглавляющий отдел убийств, в исполнении Аль Пачино – это классический герой. Он стоит на службе государства, следит за порядком и следует букве закона.
Его противник, Нил Макколи, глава преступной группы, в исполнении Роберта де Ниро, хоть и является антагонистом, но его очень сложно назвать отрицательным героем, настолько он симпатичен зрителю. Хотя он и преступник, нарушающий законы государства, он подчиняется законам преступного мира и своим собственным жестким принципам, которым следует до самого конца, чем и заслуживает наше восхищение. К тому же, для членов своей банды он является чуть ли не отцом, решающим проблемы их личной жизни. То есть, хотя он и преследует свои личные интересы, ему не чужда и забота о своих соратниках.
Режиссер убедительно демонстрирует нам похожесть этих двух людей, находящихся по разные стороны баррикад. Их различает то, что один служит интересам общества, а другой – своим собственным интересам. Но их объединяет то, что в своем служении они руководствуются правилами.
Настоящим отрицательным персонажем в фильме является случайный член банды Макколи рецидивист Уэйнгро. Характерной особенностью этого персонажа является то, что он не подчиняется никаким законам и авторитетам. Это самый настоящий отморозок, которому чужды вообще любые представления о чести, гуманности и пр.
В «Схватке» он показан как однозначно отрицательный герой. Но по сути персонаж Уэйнгро — это зарождение постнеклассического героя. Пока в обществе еще сильны представления о традиционной морали и желание упорядочить жизнь с помощью четких правил, такой герой будет неизбежно видеться отрицательным. Однако со временем в кино будут появляться персонажи, в которых индивидуализм и пренебрежение правилами станут чем-то само собой разумеющимся.

Welcome to «Conscious Movie Reviews.» I’m your host Joy Davis and here to review «John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum» that is an action and adventure drama.
On the run for committing an unsanctioned killing of High Table member Santino D’Antonio within the Continental Hotel, a $14 million bounty was placed on John’s head. His «Ex-Communicado» status would go into effect in 20 minutes for assassins to take advantage of.
At the city’s public library, John retrieved a book called «Russian Folk Tale.» He grabbed for a marker medallion, coins, crucifix necklace, and photo of his wife within its secret compartment.
By going to the library, John relied on these valuables from former allies. Books can represent our acquired wisdom and life experiences. He chose an anthology of 600 fairy and folk tales — a form of escapism, similar to his need for immediate escape.
Ernest showed up to ignore John’s «grace period» of only a few minutes to stab him. John retaliated using the book’s binder to break Ernest’s jaw and neck. Just like a binder that gives support to a book, he broke all support from the High Table figuratively, and literally broke his attacker’s upper spine with the book’s spine.
Partly stitched up by his doctor, assassins arrived to fight John at an antique arms shop. He managed to fend off more attacks at a horse stall, then flee on horseback while being pursued by bikers along the highway.
Horses often symbolize freedom and the release of repressed energy. Seeing a horse in a stable can represent an inner fear of being constrained; riding on one relates to John’s control over his natural instincts because dogs and horses are domesticated animals, trained to reign in their powerful urges, like John has done by harnessing his ambitious drives to be masterful. This is also similar to the Sagittarius sign in astrology of the half-man, half-horse — a centaur being with high ideals, prophetic sight, and the power to overcome sin and death.
Did Winston Really Betray John Wick?
While we do know that Winston shot John Wicked and put to an end an alliance that only lasted a single night, one of the things that fans believe is that he never intended to actually betray his old friend. In fact, this was proven in John Wick: Chapter 4 when they formed an alliance once more after Winston was declared excomunicado by the High Table for his actions in the past.
The truth is that Winston only shot John at that moment because it was the only way out for both of them. Despite defeating Zero and his assassins, Winston and John understood that the full might of the High Table would be thrown at them, which meant that they wouldn’t have been able to survive. As such, Winston decided to shoot John instead of killing him, as it was clear that he aimed for Wick’s bulletproof suit instead of his head, which was the only part of his body vulnerable to bullets.
Winston’s actions mirrored what he did at the end of Chapter 2 when he allowed John a grace period of one hour instead of killing him on the spot. Of course, John understood as much that Winston did the only thing that he could do as he also knew that his old friend had no obligation to give up his title, position, and life for the sake of his alliance with a person that the High Table deemed an enemy.

Heckler & Koch P30L
Like in the two previous movies, John Wick (Keanu Reeves) uses a Heckler & Koch P30L, but this time without a compensator. He only uses it at the start of the film, when he takes it from an assassin in the stable. At least one Ruska Roma member is armed with the gun during the Zero’s attack on the Tarkovsky Theater. After the deconsecration of the NYC Continental, Charon (Lance Reddick) and some Continental guards use P30L pistols during the shootout.

Stables
The most self-aware scene of the film that fully embraces John Wick’s fantasy element is his brief trot through the horse stables. Unlike the library and knife museum, Wick has nothing he can physically wield as a temporary weapon, forcing him to weaponize his creativity.
As his assailants approach, Wick strafes around a nearby horse until his attacker is squared up with its hind hooves. Once the trap has been set, Wick slaps the horses rear, causing it to buck, kicking his attacker in the head and killing him. After doing this several times, Wick gallops out of the stables upon a trusted steed, but not before tying its reigns around an assassin’s neck, dragging him behind Wick’s horse.
This scene is indicative of director Chad Stahelski continually reinventing the John Wick experience. While he never allows it to devolve into a slapstick affair, scenes like this ensure it never takes itself too seriously either. The most humorously creative instanced of forcing the world’s deadliest assassin to use what is at his immediate disposal.
John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum succeeds in ways the other chapters of the series largely failed: presenting Wick with encounters he cannot simply shoot his way out of. While the series’ penchant for spectacular shootouts remains in Parabellum (all of which outdo its predecessors) it’s the sprinkling of environment specific The Raid-esque martial arts scenes which give the film its superior variety. Scenes where Wick is forced to weaponize his environment overshadow a majority of its shootouts, which I think will be the franchises saving grace moving forwards.

Glock 34 (TTI Combat Master Package)
At least one of the Casablanca mint guards is armed with the same gun during John and Sofia’s visit. At the Continental’s armory, John Wick (Keanu Reeves) initially picks up a Glock 34 customized with the Taran Tactical Innovations Combat Master Package, same as he used in the previous film. However, Charon then suggests him to use the TTI STI 2011 instead.

Winston’s Motives Explained
We often see John Wick’s character as a one-man army capable of bringing down an entire band of well-trained assassins on his own. However, while he usually fights his own battles, he has had a lot of help in the form of allies that have been around since the very first movie. One such ally is Winston, the manager of the New York Continental Hotel and has always been one of the people that provided services to John Wick.
Of course, in John Wick: Chapter 2, Winston had no choice but to break his reluctant alliance with John. That’s because Wick killed Santino D’Antonio, who he chased the entire movie, inside the Continental, which has always been a place where hitmen and assassins aren’t allowed to conduct their “business” unless the High Table allows it. In that regard, Winston proclaimed John excomunicado and placed a bounty on his head before allowing him to have a grace period of one hour before the hit would be officially placed on him.
But in John Wick: Chapter 3, it was clear that the High Table wasn’t exactly fond of what Winston did when the Adjudicator was sent to the Continental to adjudge his actions. That was when the Adjudicator claimed that Winston was more loyal to John than he was to the High Table because he allowed him to have one hour to live instead of killing him right away the moment that he broke the rules of the High Table. As such, Winston was treading shallow waters throughout the entire events of Parabellum.
John Wick was sent by the Elder, the only man above the High Table, to kill Winston due to the defiant actions of the manager of the Continental. His excommunication was even lifted by the Elder so that he could kill Winston. Nevertheless, after meeting up with Winston, John is offered the chance to either kill him or join him in his war with the High Table.
When the Adjudicator came, Winston told her that he had no intentions of stepping down from his position as the manager of the Continental. That was when the High Table deconsecrated the New York Continental and allowed the business to be conducted inside the hotel. John joined forces with Winston and defeated Zero, the assassin hired by the High Table.
Wick met up with Winston and the Adjudicator on the roof of the Continental. The Adjudicator changed her mind by telling Winston that his defiance of the High Table symbolized his strength and that they were willing to take him back in as long as he stayed loyal to them. As a sign of his loyalty, Winston shot John Wick, who fell off the roof but still survived.
In the eyes of a lot of people, Winston betrayed John Wick by choosing to side with the High Table instead of defying them. Nevertheless, there was a really good reason why Winston shot John instead of siding with him.
As the manager of the Continental, Winston was always a man that placed his interests above any other person, even though he helped John many times during the four-part movie series. Nevertheless, throughout the four movies, he always respects John, who has known Winston for a very long time. In fact, had Winston not been there since the first movie, Wick wouldn’t have survived the army of assassins that his enemies sent after him.
But the fact that Winston changed his mind by shooting John instead of going to war with the High Table was a sign that he was more interested in holding on to his power. And he must have understood that this was the only way for him and John to continue living, knowing well enough that they wouldn’t have survived a war with the High Table.
Time Out for Parley
The Adjudicator ended the shootout to call for parley — a time out to negotiate. Winston’s act of rebellion was considered fealty for standing his ground, demanding that his managerial position be reinstated. And to prove his loyalty to the High Table, he shot John several times, causing him to fall down the alley below. The hotel was re-consecrated.
When the Adjudicator was about to leave, she checked the site where John’s dead body should have been, but is gone. She demanded that Winston take care of it.
This scene can relate in a religious way to a resurrection when a dead body has disappeared. It was really Tick Tock, the hobo, that ferried John away to be with the Bowery King. As allies, they declared Parabellum against the High Table. A storm is coming.

Pilgrimage to See the Elder
John got dropped off at the desert. Sofia provided him with some leftover water that she swilled in her mouth and spat back in the bottle. He followed the stars as directed through the dunes to eventually collapse from heat exhaustion, then carried away by the Elder’s men.
The scene resembles a religious pilgrimage that requires a fast for clarity of intent. It was fortuitous that John would be guided again by a small dog; this time, the two bright stars of the constellation Canis Minor at night. And he needed a pardon, equivalent to asking for one from the Pope.
John woke up face-to-face with the Elder to ask that his sentence of «Ex-Communicado» be reversed to keep the memories about his wife alive. John would have to kill Winston for the request to be honored. He cut off a finger with ring attached as an offering to re-affirm his fealty to the High Table.
Their agreement is similar to an arranged marriage with a wedding ring. Like the Catholic Church, there’s no tolerance for divorce by the High Table, so John’s commitment to them is permanent.
The Master in Motion
In a fight, John was outnumbered by Zero and his men within a glass room that displayed crystal skulls and a video mural of artwork on the walls. He used his belt for defense against them.
The battle was a show of precision fighting as an art form, punctuated by wavy art and a clock to represent fluidity and precision of their moves. Crystal skulls encased in glass revealed the High Table’s fine artistic taste in acquiring excellence, including the best assassins.
John was also a work of art. He embodied an ideal that life is suffering and art is pain. He fought with an exacting, purposeful style that’s backed by strong, clear intent. This was from repeatedly conforming his will through the body with weapons to be a creative expression of his Soul’s signature. True masters in battle can go beyond the mind to be purely in the moment, referred to as a Zen mind, for their Life Force to flow through them so that their moves appear effortless in an instinctive way.
John did not disappoint his fan boys; they were honored to go against a true master. With a sword to his chest, Zero lost his life.

Seeing The Director
John hurried into a theater to see The Director, a former ally and head of the Ruska Roma society. He found her demanding perfection from a ballerina who kept making mistakes.
John was an unwelcome sight because she knew that talking with him would bring «death to her door.» They headed for the back room, past the young wrestlers in training.
In private, The Director had refused John’s plea for help, then changed her mind to honor his ticket by breaking the crucifix necklace for safe passage to Casablanca. She warned that the path to paradise begins in hell. He was branded with a hot poker stick to seal their deal.
Using the theater as a strict training site, The Director upholds the belief that life is suffering and art is pain to have excellence.
A highly-trained ballerina symbolizes a situation that demands perfection under circumstances requiring total dedication to confront an unforgiving problem — the same way John must be exacting in his moves for survival.
Presenting a crucifix to The Director relates in a biblical sense to sacrificial death at the cross for true liberation. John must allow his former self, a property of the High Table, to die first.

Parabellum Isn’t Just a Latin Phrase

In “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum,” audiences see more than John’s weapon of choice (a fucking pencil). Antiques play a big role in one of the more finger-digging fight scenes on cinema, featuring axes, hatchets, tomahawks, spaghetti western handguns . . . the bad guys get killed in so many creative ways and whatever John can get his hands on.
And one of the many, many — many guns John uses in the movie is the TTI STI Combat Master pistol in a 9mm Major. That cartridge is basically a 9mm Luger round loaded to Major, creating high muzzle velocity with a soft shooting cartridge.
The 9mm Luger is also called a parabellum by ballistic pros. It’s a semi-automatic weapon produced in several models, from 1848 to 1948. The Luger was developed by Austrian designer George Luger. If you remember “John Wick: Chapter 2,” the sommelier was singing praises about Austrian handguns, recommending the firearm during John’s “shopping spree” in Italy.
The Austrian designed pistol can be considered a collector’s item; auction houses may even have rare pieces in their inventory. It’s also featured in other action-adventure movies, like “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and ”The Great Escape.”
So in chapter 3 of John Wick as the baba yaga of the underworld, parabellum is a Latin maxim and a weapon. Will “John Wick: Chapter 4” contain another Latin phrase that’ll describe the story in a nutshell? We’ll have to wait in 2022.
Knife Museum
The most refined instance of Wick weaponizing his environment is a foray through a knife museum, which, in all fairness, is as ripe of a location as any for violence to unfold in. After realizing that attempting to use the array of antique firearms is far too problematic, Wick and his assailants engage in fisticuffs. During the brawl, both parties begin smashing cabinets that line the walls, all filled with antique knives and swords to maim one another with. What unfolds is a gruesome slash fest that sees Wick unload a handful throwing knives into one assassin, only to be outdone by launching a tomahawk into another’s skull as they struggle to stand.
This scene could have very easily been a CQC fight unfolding in a nondescript warehouse, and I’m sure It would have still abided by the series standard of top tier elegant brutality. But by placing the Baba Yaga into a unique set-piece that dictates the parameters and flow of the fight, it’s not only a highlight of Parabellum but also of the entire series.
