Strength
Shazam gets his immense god-like strength from the demigod Hercules who is widely known for his numerous feats of strength. By invoking Hercules’s power, Shazam can lift over 100 tons. At one point in time, he could also juggle planets, but his powers were reduced, and nowadays, he could still probably juggle meteors.
Shazam’s incredible strength has seen him perform some extraordinary feats of strength, including knocking out Superman with one blow, stalemating Superman in an arm wrestle, and overpowering Wonder Woman. This means Shazam is one of the strongest beings in the DC Universe since he’s able to keep up with these powerhouses.
By comparison, Black Adam gets his otherworldly strength from Amon, one of the most powerful of all Egyptian gods. This allows him to lift close to 100,000 tons without much effort. It’s believed his flesh and bone are about thrice as dense as a normal human’s, which also contributes to his god-like strength.
Black Adam is famously referred to as the strongest super-powered being on Earth. Black Adam has performed some extreme feats to back up this claim. These include defeating the entire Shazam family, battling the entire Justice Society of America, and keeping up with the supremely strong Superman.
At first glance, one would say neither Shazam nor Black Adam is stronger. However, I’m inclined to believe that Black Adam is stronger because he gets his superhuman strength from one of the most powerful Egyptian gods, while Shazam gets his from a demigod. For this reason, Black Adam is the victor in this round.

Why does Black Adam hate Shazam?
As it turns out, Black Adam has been terrorizing the Shazam-ily before the characters were owned by DC. While the character isn’t always villainous, recently, he’s become a prominent villain in the DC Universe, going toe-to-toe with Superman and Shazam (then called Captain Marvel). Black Adam first appeared in Fawcett Comics’ The Marvel Family comic book in 1945. DC Comics later licensed and acquired all of Fawcett’s characters in the 1970s.
Originally, Black Adam was depicted as a villain and ancient Egyptian predecessor to Shazam the superhero, who fought his way to modern times, intent on challenging Shazam over their shared power source. However, more recently, writers such as Jerry Ordway, Geoff Johns, and David S. Goyer have reinvented the character into an anti-hero who is intent on clearing his name.

DC Comics has revised Black Adam’s origin story twice: once in 1994 and again in 2011 with the launch of the New 52. In both versions, Black Adam is a former slave and human defender of the fictional country Kahndaq, who is awarded powers by the wizard Shazam. However, he is also violent and vengeful, leading to his eventual imprisonment and Shazam’s choosing new champions on Earth.

Black Adam
Black Adam is an ancient Egyptian corrupted anti-hero attempting to clear his name. Due to the tragedies he has faced, he turned on to a villainous path. He is extremely powerful. He was an ancient Egyptian named Teth-Adam (Mighty Human), who was chosen by the wizard Shazam to be his successor due to his presumed moral purity. But, the power he got made him a little vicious and he decided to overthrow the old king Pharoah, and he has fought his way to the modern times since then.
His powers include the powers of the six ancient Egyptian deities. When Teth Adam says the magic word “Shazam,” he is transformed into Black Adam and granted the powers of these 6 deities – the stamina of Shu, which allows him to withstand and survive most types of extreme physical assaults. Additionally, he does not need to eat, sleep, or breathe and can survive unaided in space and this makes him an immortal God, the swiftness of Heru, which allows him to fly and run at speeds up to Mach 500, the strength of Amon which gives him super strength, the wisdom of Zehuti which makes him vastly knowledgeable, the power of Aton, which gives him the lightning and magical powers and the courage of Mehen which makes him psychologically and spiritually unbeatable.

How Strong is Shazam?
Captain Marvel, who is also referred to as Shazam, is one of the most powerful characters in the DC Universe, even though he is often underrated. His power puts him in the class of superheroes such as Superman, the most powerful superhero in DC, and Wonder Woman.
Shazam has the strength that makes it possible for him to catch an aircraft carrier that was thrown at him by Superman. In the comics, it is not a surprise that Superman once submitted to Shazam after he had the chance to be Shazam for a brief period, as he considered them to be of equal power.
Shazam has been hit with a lot of things including a bomb, but because of his powers which are limitless, he walks away without as much as an injury. Even when he gets injured, it is instantly healed and he does not ever get exhausted. No matter the magical powers that are sent against him, the powers that Shazam has been able to keep him immune.
One more thing that makes him powerful is the speed that he has which he got from Mercury. In the DC comics, this is something that came in handy for him when he needed to stop Flash the fastest man alive.
Needless to say, what makes Shazam exceedingly powerful is not only his physical powers but also his inner strength which is easy to recognize even by other superheroes including Superman. Billy’s inner strength is clear in his decisions and the choices he makes in very difficult situations.
He also has what makes him weak just as Black Adam. Shazam is so when he gets hit with a high velocity of electricity, he loses his powers and turns back to Billy and not Shazam.
Power
The modern Black Adam made his debut in Jerry Ordway’s The Power of Shazam which establishes that Teth-Adam was one of the greatest warriors serving Pharaoh Rameses II, catching the eye of the Wizard who grants him powers. Adam serves as Egypt’s guardian for centuries until he is corrupted by a demonic entity known as Blaze. The Wizard strips Adam of his power after the whole “seduced by a demonic succubus” thing and places the Black Adam power in a scarab (as one does).
The big takeaway here, other than the fact Ordway’s Shazam was beyond awesome, is that the writer/artist was the first to establish Black Adam as a once noble soul. Black Adam was Egypt’s greatest champion, and until he was corrupted by Blaze, he was the model of heroism in the early days of the DCU. The tale of Black Adam is almost biblical in scope as he rises a champion and falls a corrupted soul that murders the family of a boy destined to be a hero. It’s a different take than the one we see in the movie, but it’s nonetheless an important milestone for the character.

About Black Adam
Black Adam is an upcoming American superhero film based on the DC Comics fictional supervillain, directed by Jaume Collett-Serra. It is a spinoff of the 2019 movie Shazam!, and the 11th film in the DCEU franchise.
Black Adam is the antihero to Shazam and possesses the same powers as the white-caped superhero. But after being imprisoned for 5000 years, he is finally free, and now, the Justice Society of America, a team of superheroes, must stop him before he fulfills his mission to wreak havoc on the world that rejected him.
The film stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as Black Adam, and joining him are cast members Noah Centineo, Aldis Hodge, Sarah Shahi, Marwan Kenzari, Quintessa Swindell, Pierce Brosnan, and Viola Davis.
The Black Adam Family
While Billy Batson has long had his own Shazam family, in the series 52 (2006) by Grant Morrison, Geoff Johns, Greg Rucka, Mark Waid, and Keith Giffen, Black Adam gains a family of his own. But like many parts of the Black Adam story, boy, does it end tragically.
52 introduced Adrianna Tomaz, an enslaved woman who is offered to Black Adam, the ruler of Kahndaq, by a group of criminals known as Intergang. Black Adam doesn’t take kindly to slavery and violently murders the gang. He falls in love with Tomaz and even shares his powers, transforming her into the hero known as Isis (a nod to Saturday mornings of yore as the character Isis used to share a live action programming block with Shazam back in the 1970s).
Eventually, the lovers find Tomaz’s brother Amon dying from injuries suffered from a horrific beating. Black Adam shares his powers with the young boy who becomes Kid Osiris. This all sounds great until Kid Osiris is eaten by a talking, bipedal crocodile (comics are amazing). Later, Isis is also killed, telling Adam in her dying breath that she was wrong for trying to soften him and that he should avenge her. And he does just that, going on a rampage around the world, killing a number of international heroes, until the mystic heroes of the DCU drain Adam of his powers as Billy changes the magic word that grants Black Adam his mystic might.

Shazam is one of the most indestructible forces in the entire DC Universe, thanks to the Courage of Achilles, which grants him superhuman invulnerability. Conventional weapons do not affect Shazam; only the universe’s most powerful beings can topple him. He’s so invulnerable to physical damage that he was able to tank hits from an enraged Superman, which is no mean feat.
Black Adam is also quite invulnerable, thanks to the Courage of Mehen. Conventional weapons like guns and missiles do not affect whatsoever on him. Only an injury that is so great it dispersed most of his bodily molecules would be enough to cause Black Adam’s physical death.
Arguably, both Shazam and Black Adam are equally as invulnerable as each other. However, in my opinion, the differing source of their powers of invulnerability would make one of them more invulnerable to physical damage.
Shazam gets his power of invulnerability from the demigod Achilles while Black Adam gets him from Mehen, a deity. So, it only makes sense that Black Adam is a bit more invulnerable than Shazam.

Billy vs Teth
While both these individuals have powers based upon thunder attacks, we have to admit that their attacks are going to be pretty similar using thunderbolts. But since they are powered with the abilities given to them by 6 different Deities/Gods, their other range of abilities do differ.
Both of them can fight for as long as the fight goes on due to their vast durability, stamina, and unlimited strengths. Both of them can match each other shot for shot. But every time these two gladiators have fought in the comics, Black Adam has shown levels of strength that are much greater than Shazam.
It is because Shazam fights for what’s right and is generally a good guy, he finds a way to turn the fights to his advantage. More often than not, he gets assistance from the likes of Superman to beat Adam, so if Black Adam can hold his own against Shazam and Superman together even for a short while, we have the answer to who is stronger among Adam and Shazam. So, I just cannot wait for the Rock to kick Shazam’s ass on the big screen until Shazam obviously finds a way to win.
Plot[]
- Flashback scene from 10 years ago: archaeologists Theo Adam and C.C. Batson (Billy’s father) work for Sivana Industries and are excavating the tomb of Ramses II. Adam finds Khem-Adam’s scarab nearby. He becomes obsessed with it and kills Batson to steal it. The Wizard learns of this and begins to narrow his search of the chosen one to Batson’s son. Doctor Sivana learns of this and studies Theo Adam for years.
- In present day, Billy Batson is talking with his Shazam! family about how cool it was to help defend Earth in The Justice League III’s finale. The Shazam family are on a trip to Metropolis. Billy wants to approach Superman to ask about any more adventures, but doesn’t know where to find him. He has taken an indefinite absence from the Justice League. He meets with Red Tornado in the Hall of Justice.
- Meanwhile, Mister Mind releases Doctor Sivana from prison. With the 7 Deadly Sins defeated in Shazam!, his last hope for the Wizard’s powers lie with Theo Adam’s scarab. He manipulates Theo Adam to use the scarab, by saying Shazam! and he turns into Black Adam, the Ancient Egyptian legend. Sivana tells him that the Wizard, who took his powers in Black Adam is dead, and he lent his powers to Billy Batson. Sivana hopes that Black Adam and Shazam! destroy each other, in order for him to obtain the power from both the Shazam staff and Black Adam scarab.
- Doctor Fate makes his DCCU debut, and talks to Black Adam. Nabu has ties to Teth-Adam from Black Adam. He tells him to use his powers for good, however Black Adam fights back. After the clash, Doctor Fate leaves and warns Shazam!
- While in Metropolis, Theo Adam finds Billy and threatens his foster parents in front of him, forcing him to reveal to them that he is Shazam!
- Black Adam fights Shazam! while the Shazam family is manipulated by Doctor Sivana and Mister Mind.
- Black Adam is defeating Shazam until Superman shows up and tries to break them up, not knowing what is going on.
- Sivana temporarily retakes the powers from some of the Shazam family. Mister Mind then grows large and kills Sivana, taking the powers. Mary and Freddie fight him.
- Meanwhile, Superman and Shazam are able to contain Black Adam. Mister Mind is defeated and the Shazam family gets their powers back.
- Doctor Fate appears, and reveals that he is there to talk to a subdued Black Adam that his host, Theo Adam, is evil and was manipulated by Doctor Sivana. Fate was sent by Nabu, a wise being from Black Adam. They remove the scarab from Theo Adam, who is then arrested. Shazam holds onto the scarab.
- Shazam asks Superman if he can be on the Justice League. Superman says he needs more time to develop as a hero. He then tells Wonder Woman, who is recruiting new Justice League members, that Shazam will be a good replacement for him.
- Black Adam’s return is teased in the first credits scene.
- Superman returns home to Lois Lane and the kids in the second credits scene, setting up The Last Son of Krypton.
Are Shazam and Black Adam The Same and Are They Related?
No, Shazam and Black Adam are not the same but they are related. As indicated, they are two different characters who have many differences. They are referred to as two sides of the same coin.
One of the first points of being related to each other is that both Shazam and Black Adam are linked to the same council of wizards. It is because of this that they use the same word, SHAZAM, to access the power of the Gods. Whenever they scream the word, they both are struck by lightning and that is how they access the godly abilities. What this means is that they have similar abilities, strength, wisdom, and courage.
It is important to note that even though they are linked to the same council of wizards, the gods from which they draw power are different, as indicated.
Why Does Black Adam Say Shazam?
Black Adam always says Shazam because it is the name through which he gets to access godly abilities. When he calls out the name, he is not referring to his rival Billy, but rather, it is an acronym for the gods that give him his powers.
While S stands for the Shu, H links him to Heru or Horus, and A ties him to the Amon. The letter Z is for Zehuti while A is for Aton, and finally, M stands for Mehen.
All the letters of the word he yells stand for an Egyptian god from which he draws a certain power. Shu is the one who gives him his invulnerability and stamina while the god Horus gives him speed and ability to fly. He also gets balance from this god. Next is Amon who is also referred to as Amun-Ra, the ancient Egyptian god of the sun and air. Adam’s strength comes from this god and that is why he is among the strongest superheroes in the DC Universe.
The god of Zehuti who is in charge of wisdom, intelligence, and magic, is behind the the wisdom of Black Adam as well as his enhanced senses. He is gifted with senses of hearing, sight, and smell that supersede what can be gotten from any man. This is what makes it quite easy for him to find those who wrong him.
Aton is the next god from which Adam draws some strength. The sun god gives Black Adam his lighting abilities thanks to which he can cause thunder strikes and lightning bolts. Mehen, the Egyptian Snake God, also empowers Adam with the ability to carry out magical spells.
Shazam Also Says The Word Shazam For A Similar Reason
Even though it is his name, Billy also says Shazam in order to activate certain powers and tap from god-like abilities. Just as it is with Black Adam, each alphabet of the word is an acronym to the name of a god from whom he draws power.
As indicated, his name is a representation of the Greek gods and mythological beings; Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles, and Mercury. Billy Batson gets his Wisdom from Solomon and it is from ercules that he draws his strength when he says the word. Atlas grants his stamina, Zeus makes him powerful while his courage is drawn from Achilles, and Mercury is the one who gives him speed.
Black Adam Versus Shazam: Who Would Win?

Black Adam and Shazam have the same source of their powers which makes it a little tricky to determine who is more powerful out of the two. However, there is one dissimilarity between Adam and Shazam; Adam has had his power for almost a hundred years while Shazam’s power is comparatively freshly acquired. Adam has had the time to explore and enhance each of his powers which Shazam hasn’t had. This gives Adam an upper hand over Shazam.
Another thing that sets the two superheroes apart is that Black Adam is more willing to kill than Shazam is. Adam is known for his earth-shattering rage and his capacity to kill someone with a single blow. At one point in the comics, Superman, Shazam, and Black Adam were locked in a face-off where Shazam and Superman had to combine their powers to defeat Adam. The only way Adam can be defeated is through a combined effort by all superheroes. This is a ready predicament of Black Adam’s powers thus clearly establishing that he is much more powerful than Shazam.
