Is that a Hitachi Magic Wand, Or Are You Just Happy to See Me?

There’s an overarching question in the film in addition to “Is Frogman real?”: Does Frogman fuck? 

It’s a question that’s asked in the interviews with locals (they laughingly answer in the affirmative) and is present throughout the film. While filming, Dallas, Amy, and Scotty are told that Frogman carries a wand (a phallic symbol? A tool for magic? Maybe a Hitachi?), and has been known to have human lovers. When the trio searches the woods, they find slime on trees and on their tent (Frogman ejaculate, perhaps?). At the film’s climax, they discover further evidence of froggy fornication. 

“Does Frogman fuck?”, on a surface level, seems to be just a cheeky and deranged question, designed to elicit uncomfortable laughs from the audience. And it may be just that. But it can also lead the way to deeper conversations on topics such as paraphilias, consent, and the subgenre in erotic fiction known as “monster fucking.” The question “Does Frogman fuck?” may indeed make some people uncomfortable…but isn’t that discomfort worth interrogating? What is the purpose of the horror genre if not to provide an outlet to explore and analyze the human psyche and all of its kinks and deviances? The question isn’t just “Does Frogman fuck?”; we must also ask ourselves, “Why do we need to know if Frogman fucks?”

June 2023 Horror Streaming Cheat Sheet

• Here ye! There are a good handful of hangers-on from 1980s horror collection leaving The Criterion Channel at the end of the month. • If modern horror anthologies are your bag 2012’s The ABCs of Death and its 2014 sequel (as well as the first three entries in the V/H/S series) are leaving Hulu at the end of the month.

The streaming service champion of the month is Tubi, which is (1) free; (2) genre-film friendly, and (3) reliably good at acquisitions. The People’s Streaming Service prevails once again. The streaming service dunce of the month is once again Disney+, which has really cemented its status as an enemy to horror movies. It’s not all that surprising that the most straight-edge/capitalistic streamer would be the most antagonistic to a rebellious genre like horror. But I’m not going to pull punches! Up yours, D+!

Horror Streaming Highlights for June 2023

Pick of the Month: Infinity Pool (2023)

Neon

Synopsis: An all-inclusive vacation to an isolated island resort never leads to anything horrifying, right? Right? Well, failed novelist James and his heiress wife Em are about to find out! Will James’ writer’s block be cured by the island’s soothing surf and placid beaches? Or will the revelation that the island’s draconian laws are mere suggestions to a privileged few lead the writer down a darker path?

One of the only kinds of inflation I can abide is the career of Brendan Cronenberg (son of David), who has only become more interesting, polished, and self-assured over time. Flawed as it may be, Infinity Pool is a must-watch for anyone with, uh, my notes say “taste”?

Kinky and compelling in equal measure with some banger lead performances from known freaks Alexander Skarsgård and Mia Goth, dive on into the Infinity Pool!

Expect the unexpected with the most underrated entry in the ‘Child’s Play’ franchise!

Focus Features

Synopsis: The last time we saw Glen, they were naught but a tiny, sharp-toothed babe bursting from Tiffany’s plastic loins as the final jump scare in ‘The Bride of Chucky.’ Now, the tiny tot is all grown up, dying to know who their parents are and what their purpose is. Innocently, Glen manages to resurrect their parents, who proceed to bicker over everything from their kid’s gender to their innate talent for murder.

Seed of Chucky‘s reputation as the stinker of the franchise is inaccurate for two reasons. First, there are no “stinkers” in the Child’s Play franchise. Second, if the series does have a weak link, it’s Child’s Play 3.

While the Child’s Play films have never been shy about switching things up, for many, Seed of Chucky put a bit too much paprika on its slasher sandwich. These people are cowards. Leaning hard and unapologetically into queer paratext, Seed of Chucky is loud and campy in all the right places. The appearance of John Waters should tell you everything you need to know about what this film is trying to do.

Picking up the meta-fiction approach perfected by Wes Craven’s New Nightmare a decade earlier, Seed of Chucky is smarter and funnier than its reputation would suggest.

A girl’s best friend is her homicidal robot

Synopsis: After unexpectedly becoming the guardian of her orphaned 8-year-old niece, robotics engineer Gemma does what any loving aunt would do: she gives little, emotionally-shattered Cady an un-tested prototype of an AI doll companion. What could possibly go wrong?

Released to thunderous “hell yeahs” as a campy oasis in a sea of self-serious genre fare, 2022’s M3GAN took the internet by storm, as is her prerogative as our new robot overlord.

Directed by Gerard Johnstone (of Housebound fame) and with a screenplay by Malignant scribe Akela Cooper, M3GAN wasn’t the gay icon we expected, the gay icon we absolutely what we deserved. It’s Pride Month. If you can’t meet M3GAN from the comfort of your couch, you’re homophobic. I don’t make the rules (I do).

A new entry in everyone’s favorite “vampire fail-son” franchise

Synopsis: In this 500-year spanning prequel, we learn about the origins of Radu Vladislas, the sassy half-vampire, half-demon who went from a weapon of the Church to a horrible, long-fingered, blood-slurping goblin man.

If Charles Band‘s Full Moon Entertainment likes one thing, it’s sequels. So a new entry in the Subspecies franchise is less of a surprise than a fun treat. At the risk of showing my hand, my entry point into the multi-film soap opera that is Subspecies was Allison Pregler’s video essay series. You can (and should) watch the first of their videos here. Pregler makes plain what makes the series a fan favorite. Namely that it is very, very silly.

Tubi, bless their hearts, is bringing the entire Subspecies franchise to their library this month. So whether you’re an initiate or an old hat, you can get acquainted with horror’s biggest vampire drama queen: Radu (played in every single film in the franchise by Anders Hove, who more “culturally elevated” readers might recognize from a handful of Lars von Trier films).

Location, Location, Location.

One of the most compelling aspects of all Subspecies entries are the locations. Early films shot extensively in the city of Bucharest; the Corvin Castle in Hunedoara, Romania; and the rough terrain surrounding the area’s ruins. Subspecies V: Blood Rise was filmed in Serbia, and the characters similarly find obstacles to make them question their footing. Director of photography Vladimir Ilich and production designer Ivan Cirovic make artful use of the Belgrade fortress, including underground rooms with ancient storage. The production design makes it feel like a Hammer horror feature shot in its historic origins. This brings an authenticity to the Gothic surroundings and a tangible sense of foreboding while maintaining the unique feel of Subspecies.

Subspecies V: Blood Rise has come a long way since the Jason and the Argonauts-style animation that propelled the red demons in the first films. As a general rule, there is usually less blood wasted in Subspecies features. Performed in a more stage-informed theatrical way, it always appears the vampires are drinking their fill while dribbling every drop of rancid-colored-corn syrup onto prone flesh. The norm of modern vampire entertainment is to pour blood all over the place, which may look good on camera, but is not very nutritious. 

Judicious as the blood use may be, there are, however, a few overused effects in Subspecies V. Much of these are attempts to improve on sequences from previous films but even some of the effects within the film itself begin to grow long in the tooth.

While shadows still play out multiple roles in Subspecies V, the overt nods to F. W. Murnau’s 1929 impressionistic masterpiece Nosferatu are minimalized. As is the gore. This is not a slasher film. Most of the torture is on the audience, and is inflicted by way of disgust. I’m sorry, but how many creatures have licked that Bloodstone? It looks less and less appetizing and more horrific in the mind’s selective subconscious with every slurp.

Thankfully, some of the effects are still cheesy, allowing fans of contemporary horror to stretch the suspension of belief far enough to bridge the possible disappointment of practical effects. Imaginative as they are, they may not look as convincing as larger budgeted illusions. Even as there is a return to the sword fights of the first film, there is a lack of diversity in the gore. Nicolaou does nothing groundbreaking. It’s not entirely the director’s fault, Radu dies a lot. You really can’t end a Subspecies unless he’s on the mend from some dismemberment or another.

The Bloodiest Movies New to Screambox in June 2023

The Mangler (1995)

The Mangler was directed by Tobe Hooper, and it is inspired by the short story of the same name written by Stephen King.

Robert Englund camps it up as villainous laundry press owner Bill Gartly in The Mangler. The monster in the movie is a laundry press which is possessed by a demon. While that sounds fairly goofy (and it is), the movie itself is quite enjoyable. Also enjoyable is the gore caused by the possessed laundry press, which crushes and even burns a few people in gloriously bloody scenes.

Autopsy (1975)

Autopsy could be considered a giallo, though it is definitely an odd one.

Autopsy is only occasionally gory, but the strangeness of much of the gore is absolutely one of the highlights of the movie. Mimsy Farmer plays Simona Sanna, a young doctor interning at a morgue in Rome. A rash of suicides in the area are being attributed to the effects of sunspots, but Simona learns that there is more to the story. Autopsy is a murder mystery first and foremost, but the inclusion of scenes like Simona hallucinating dead bodies with gory wounds getting up and walking around make watching the movie quite an odd experience.

Day of the Dead (1985)

Day of the Dead was originally supposed to be a much more expansive movie, with George Romero being quoted as saying he wanted to make “the Gone with the Wind of zombie films.”

Day of the Dead is easily one of George Romero’s bloodiest movies. As the second sequel to the zombie classic Night of the Living Dead (1968), Day of the Dead has plenty of guts spilling and flesh tearing. It’s even more grotesque when you learn that real pig guts were used in some of the film’s most iconic scenes, and that the guts were rotten by the time they were needed for use.

Deathcember (2019)

Deathcember is made up of 24 shorts from 24 different directors.

Your enjoyment of this low-budget horror anthology film may vary from segment to segment, but there is some good fun to be had here. There is also some good/funny gore if you’re patient. There are intestines falling out of people, a closeup of someone getting stabbed in the nose, and a Christmas-shopping brawl that leads to battered bodies and pools of blood.

The Collector (2009)

The Collection (2012) is a sequel to The Collector (2009). A third film, The Collection, began production but was shut down after filming began in 2019. Director Marcus Dunstan has said he doesn’t know why production stopped.

The Collector is an underseen horror film that is clearly inspired by the Saw movies. In fact, an early version of the script (written by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan) was pitched as an origin story for John Kramer, aka the Jigsaw Killer from the Saw franchise. The final version of the story is quite different from Saw though, with the story involving a burglar who breaks into a house that has already been broken into by a sadistic killer. Still, fans of Saw will enjoy The Collector thanks to it being set in a house filled with traps that lead to gruesome results for anyone unfortunate enough to blunder into them.

Rabid (2019)

Jen and Sylvia Soska made a name for themselves as horror directors with American Mary (2012) starring Katharine Isabelle. (pictured: Laura Vandervoort in Rabid)

Though the Soska sisters’ 2019 remake of Rabid isn’t quite as good as David Cronenberg’s body horror classic from 1977, it is more bloody. Laura Vandervoort stars as Rose, a woman who undergoes an experimental treatment after an accident leaves her disfigured. Rose develops a craving for blood, and her uncontrollable binges lead her surviving victims to become raging blood-seekers as well.

Война единорогов — прекрасный и страшный фильм. Он смешной и тревожный. Милый и жестокий. Использование конфетной анимации для рассказа о фашизме, религиозном фанатизме, глубоких семейных травмах и других связанных с ними темах — смелое решение, и оно фантастически работает. В Unicorn Wars происходит много событий, но основная линия повествования проходит через двух братьев-медвежат: Блюи (или Азулин) и Табби (или Горди). Братья — новобранцы в армии плюшевых медведей, ведущей войну с ненавистным врагом — единорогами — на протяжении многих поколений.

Война, основанная на лжи и религиозных доктринах, приводит к тому, что Блюи начинает совершать все более садистские поступки, а добродушный Табби с ужасом наблюдает за происходящим. Фильм «Война единорогов», отличающийся крайней жестокостью и зрелой тематикой, пройдет испытание временем как один из самых уникальных и интригующих фильмов ужасов о войне.

Фильм «С детьми что-то не так» — это как «Дурная кровь» (1956), скрещенное с фантастическим фильмом о монстрах. По сюжету две супружеские пары отдыхают в соседних домиках в лесу. У одной пары есть дети, девочка и мальчик, а другая пара бездетна. После посещения странной ямы в лесу дети начинают вести себя странно, и четверых взрослых ожидает день и ночь ужаса, поскольку дети становятся все более опасными.

По ходу развития сюжета в фильм добавляется немного психологического ужаса, но в итоге «С детьми что-то не так» оказывается хорошим фильмом о монстрах с несколькими очень приятными поворотами.

Location, Location, Location.

One of the most compelling aspects of all Subspecies entries are the locations. Early films shot extensively in the city of Bucharest; the Corvin Castle in Hunedoara, Romania; and the rough terrain surrounding the area’s ruins. Subspecies V: Blood Rise was filmed in Serbia, and the characters similarly find obstacles to make them question their footing. Director of photography Vladimir Ilich and production designer Ivan Cirovic make artful use of the Belgrade fortress, including underground rooms with ancient storage. The production design makes it feel like a Hammer horror feature shot in its historic origins. This brings an authenticity to the Gothic surroundings and a tangible sense of foreboding while maintaining the unique feel of Subspecies.

Subspecies V: Blood Rise has come a long way since the Jason and the Argonauts-style animation that propelled the red demons in the first films. As a general rule, there is usually less blood wasted in Subspecies features. Performed in a more stage-informed theatrical way, it always appears the vampires are drinking their fill while dribbling every drop of rancid-colored-corn syrup onto prone flesh. The norm of modern vampire entertainment is to pour blood all over the place, which may look good on camera, but is not very nutritious. 

Judicious as the blood use may be, there are, however, a few overused effects in Subspecies V. Much of these are attempts to improve on sequences from previous films but even some of the effects within the film itself begin to grow long in the tooth.

While shadows still play out multiple roles in Subspecies V, the overt nods to F. W. Murnau’s 1929 impressionistic masterpiece Nosferatu are minimalized. As is the gore. This is not a slasher film. Most of the torture is on the audience, and is inflicted by way of disgust. I’m sorry, but how many creatures have licked that Bloodstone? It looks less and less appetizing and more horrific in the mind’s selective subconscious with every slurp.

Thankfully, some of the effects are still cheesy, allowing fans of contemporary horror to stretch the suspension of belief far enough to bridge the possible disappointment of practical effects. Imaginative as they are, they may not look as convincing as larger budgeted illusions. Even as there is a return to the sword fights of the first film, there is a lack of diversity in the gore. Nicolaou does nothing groundbreaking. It’s not entirely the director’s fault, Radu dies a lot. You really can’t end a Subspecies unless he’s on the mend from some dismemberment or another.
