When the PS5 design was revealed it proved divisive. Even on the TechRadar team, there were those who loved the PS5 design it and those that hated the PS5 design . This is partly because it’s such a departure from Sony’s usual approach, with its two-tone color scheme and its curved futuristic shape. However, Sony has since released colored PS5 covers with 5 different options.
The PS5 is also the biggest console Sony has ever made. The PS4 Pro, on the other hand, looks more like a traditional console and sits unobtrusively within any entertainment set up. It’s slim, light at 3.3 kg, and not in the least controversial. The same can’t be said about the PlayStation 5.
The PS5’s gargantuan size does give it one significant advantage over the PS4 Pro, though: it’s practically silent and produces a minimal amount of heat. The PS4 Pro, meanwhile, can kick up a fuss when playing certain games, and it’s also guilty of spitting out significant heat.

Actually, PS5 is more energy-efficient than some PS4 models. For instance, PS5 consumes less power for media, suspend and home screen than PS4 and PS4 Pro. Besides, playing PS4 games on PS5 saves more power than on PS4 Pro. The PS5 only uses more electricity than PS4 when you’re gaming. It’s the same with the PS4 Pro. PS4 Pro is more energy efficient than PS4 when using streaming apps.

Price is an important factor when deciding whether or not to upgrade to a new system. You should compare the prices on the battle of PS4 Pro vs. PS5. Just look at how a high price tag impacted sales of the PS3 in 2006, which infamously cost consumers about $600. In 2006, that was a huge detour and would probably still alienate potential buyers today. Without going any further in time, in 2013 the Xbox One suffered a similar fate due to its price of $499, $100 more than the PS4. There are many factors that can affect the overall success of a console, but starting on the right foot at a consumer friendly price will undoubtedly make a big difference.
As it stands, we don’t know how much the PS5 will cost, but analysts estimate it will be around $499. Earlier this year, a report from BloombergHe explained that it costs about $450 to make the PS5 system, which seems to give credit to the estimated price of $499. However, as we recently discovered, there will actually be two SKUs of the console: a standard version with a disk drive, as well as the all-digital edition, with no integrated disk drive. It’s unclear how the Bloomberg report relates to the two versions, and if the console’s production cost is really what they point to. In addition, there is a question if this value refers to the standard or digital edition. It is logical that the digital edition is less expensive, but by how much, it still remains a mystery.
If one of the models costs $499, it wouldn’t be the end of the world. Taking inflation into account, if the $399 PS4 were to launch in 2020, it would cost around $440, which is not too far from the estimated price on the PS5. Given the improvements that the new console offers over the previous one, the estimated value seems fair. Even the $399 price tag of the PS4 Pro when it launched in 2016 would cost about $430 in today’s money, adjusted for inflation and currency rates in each country.
On the other hand, it is not surprising that a console manufacturer loses money with each system – at least – in the beginning. Sony took a huge loss on every PS3 sold in 2006, with the $599 model costing the company around $840 each to produce. The idea is to make money with the software and accessories, recovering the money lost over time, as the system becomes less expensive to produce. Given the history, it may be well within the realm of possibility to expect a $399 system, even if it costs $450 to produce. However, it could be difficult to sell a console for hundreds of dollars later this year, due to the financial crisis caused by the global COVID-19 pandemic.
Right now, you can get a PS4 Pro for around $399, although constant sales have caused it to hit $299. We imagine that by the time the PS5 comes out, a PS4 Pro will be relatively cheap to buy.
Speaking of which, we don’t know when we’ll get our hands on the PS5 as Sony has yet to announce a release date. The system is still scheduled, for a 2020 holiday launch, with many expecting it to launch around Black Friday. Assasin’s Creed Valhalla will be released on November 17, 2020, while the highly anticipated Cyberpunk 2077 will be released on November 19, two days later. Some speculate that the PS5 will launch near or on one of those dates. Looking at previous PlayStation systems, the PS3, PS4, and PS4 Pro were released in November of each year, so it’s a gamble that Sony will continue that time frame with the PS5 later this year.
Nikkei and Bloomberg report that Sony has doubled the number of PS5 systems to be produced in March 2021 to around 9 million units, due to high demand. Hopefully this will mitigate supply issues at launch.

The PS5 is a powerhouse of a console so it commands top dollar. Prices start at £449 ($499, AU$749) for a PS5, and £359 ($399, AU$599) for the PS5 Digital Edition. The latter is identical to the standard PS5 in terms of performance and specs, but lacks an optical disc drive. Both models come with 825GB of SSD storage.
The original PS4 has long disappeared from shelves, having been replaced by the PS4 Slim (referred to from here on in as simply ‘PS4’) in 2016. You can pick up the 500GB PS4 for £259 ($299, AU$440). There’s also the 4K-capable PS4 Pro, which hit shelves at £349 ($399, AU$559) in 2016.
The good news for those buying a PS4 or PS4 Pro is that both have plunged in price during the seasonal sales – here’s today’s best PS4 deals. The less-good news is that Sony plans to axe most PS4 models, though it will continue to support the PS4 family in terms of games and features for years to come.
Ultimately, if you’re looking for a bargain the PS4 wins hands down – it’s almost half the price of the PS5.

During system architect Mark Cerny’s “The Road to PS5” speech, we got our first look at the PS5’s specs. Like the PS4 Pro, the PS5 uses a custom AMD Radeon chip, but as you’d expect, the newer system is more powerful. The PS5 has more than double the number of CUs than on the PS4 Pro, but the main thing that makes a world of difference is the teraflops. TFLOPs is a term you might have heard a lot recently when discussing the new systems. It’s sort of a buzzword, but it does matter a great deal.
In essence, a TFLOP is a direct measurement of the computer’s (or in this case, the console’s) performance. The term refers to the system’s ability to calculate one trillion floating-point operations per second. The PS4 Pro includes 4.2 TFLOPs, which means it can handle 4.2 trillion floating-point calculations per second. The PS5, on the other hand, will double that and then some, offering 10.3 TFLOPs.
Thanks to the PS5’s 36 CUs and clock speed, it’s able to achieve a lot more from a graphical standpoint than any other PlayStation system before it. The PS5’s 2.23GHz is, again, over double that of the PS4 Pro, which comes in at 911Mhz. This measurement refers to the rate at which the system can perform internal operations, and it’s measured by cycles per second. With the PS5, its clock speed will vary based on the game and how much is required of the GPU.
When comparing the PS5 to a machine that’s four years older than it, even more can be said about the power of the new machine. As pointed out during Cerny’s discussion, the PS5 can do what the PS4 Pro can do, but with much less effort, due to its modern architecture. So when simply comparing numbers, it’s important to take into consideration that the new system will feature newer parts.
PS5 vs PS4: Price and Where to Buy
How much is a PS4 or PS5? Generally, PS5 is more expensive than PS4. A 1TB PS4 Slime model costs about $299.99 and a PS4 Pro console costs about $399.99. If you want a PS5 Digital Edition, you need to pay around $399.99. And for the Standard Edition, it’s about $499.99 (in the USA).
For now, it might be hard to buy a PS5. Although Sony’s PlayStation Direct has been holding restock events almost weekly, you might still find it out of stock when you plan to buy one. You need to wait for some time and you can check the retailers like Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy frequently for the latest updates.

In nearly every regard, the PS5 is a better machine than the PS4 Pro. The one thing that — at first glance — might seem off is the PS5’s smaller hard drive size, which comes in at 825GB of memory. We’ll cover the system’s internal memory in more detail below, but for now, it’s important to distinguish the PS5’s solid-state drive (SSD) from the PS4 Pro’s hard disk drive (HDD). The PS5’s SSD is one of its shining factors, which bolsters the machine and makes the user experience better, thanks to its faster load times and an upgrade in overall performance. So that 825GB isn’t as much of a hindrance as it may seem, even if we are losing 175GB of storage space.
Aside from that, you can clearly see the improvements the PS5 has over the PS4 Pro, from its 10.3 TFLOPs to its 16GB GDDR6 memory, and the ability to accept Ultra HD Blu-ray disks. The only downside we know of when it comes to its specs is its weight and overall size. The PS5 comes in at 9.9 pounds — nearly 3 more pounds than the PS4 Pro — and is 15.4 by 10.24 by 4.09 inches, making it an absolute beast of a console. But when you factor in what the system can do, a heavier machine isn’t so bad.

Будущее удешевление
Обычная практика для Sony. Удешевлять консоли к концу года. К концу 2021, новая консоль Sony обойдется в 432 и 345 долларов за версию с дисководом и без него соответственно. Практически все игры 2021 года выходят и на PS4 и на PS5
Многие проекты, будут выходить и на старое поколение ещё как минимум полгода. К примеру, Horizon Forbidden West точно появится на PS4. Многие продолжения будут доступны для обеих консолей, если же брать новые проекты. Они рассчитаны на PS5. Такие, как GhostWire: Tokyo, Final Fantasy 16, Gothic Remake, Deathloop и другие. Но всё же этих проектов пока меньшинство, да и ближе к концу года ситуация резко не поменяется. Ведь прошлое поколение ещё не пришло в непригодность и тянет сиквелы, ремейки. Это не особо портит настроение обладателям PS4.

Here’s where the PS4 comes into own. There are more than 4000 PS4 games available right now, and the discs are typically much cheaper than PS5 equivalents. Better still, Sony has confirmed that a number of top PS5 titles will be available for the PS4, so there’s no need to rush out and upgrade.
However, if you choose to splash out on a PS5 you’ll enjoy the best of both worlds. All but a tiny handful of PS4 games are playable on the PS5. Furthermore, a subscription to PlayStation Plus (£5/$5 per month) offers PS5 owners free access to 20 of the best-ever PS4 titles, including Uncharted 4 and God of War. Those with a PS4 and PlayStation Plus won’t be able to access the same perk.
The PS5 also boasts a few exclusive next-gen titles. Those with a PS4 Pro can grab a copy of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, but the brilliant Demon’s Souls and Astro’s Playroom (which comes pre-installed on the console) can only be played on PS5. Other PS5 exclusives are on the way, such as God of War: Ragnarok, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, Gran Turismo 7 and Returnal, and that list is only going to get longer as time goes on.
So, both machines boast an abundance of games, but while the PlayStation 4 offers more bang for your buck, if you want those games to look and play at their best and you don’t want to miss out on future blockbusters, you have to get a PlayStation 5.

Forget discs, Just beam it straight to my system
Digital downloads are becoming more and more prevalent but there’s no denying that people still like to have a physical disc. That being said, the concept is becoming more implemented. Even though games still come out on discs, they are also being offered as digital downloads. With the PS4, the entire games must be installed to the hard drive, and we’re talking up to fifty gigabytes per game. The storage of discs is only so large before it’s simply not logical to use discs anymore.
Part of the reason that downloads receive so much hate is that people don’t like waiting for their games to finish installing. PS4 implemented a feature where you can begin playing before it’s finished, but the PS5 will be released in the time of Light Peak technology, which promises download speeds of up to ten gigabytes per second. Waiting won’t be an issue. When the PS5 releases, discs will be a thing of the past, and Sony is already prepping consumers with this change by having the option to download every game you purchase.
It’s a smart move on their part to do it this way, as massive change is typically frowned upon. Gradual change however sneaks up and strikes before you know it, and therefore have time to complain about it. Ultimately though, this kind of change is good for the industry as it removes the barrier between the gamer and their games.

Слухи про поддержку разрешения 8K следует относить к маркетинговой шелухе. То есть, изображение на телевизор, конечно, может идти и в 8K, но ни о каком рендеринге в этом разрешении и речи быть не может. Даже топовые актуальные железки AMD не способны на такую производительность. В Sony выбрали в качестве основы пожалуй, самые лучшие решения своего партнера с учетом цены. Даже если в Sony не смогут удержать стоимость консолей в пределах 500 долларов США (а вероятно, что не смогут), то все равно Play Station 5 будет лучшим игровым устройством по соотношению цены и производительности в 2024 году.
Если информация об интеграции ИИ-чипа в процессор подтвердится, то мы наверняка услышим множество рекламной шумихи про невообразимые достоинства кремниевого искусственного интеллекта, как до этого слышали рассказы про волшебный SSD. Искусственный интеллект нынче в моде. Но будет ли использоваться этот чип в играх?
Если для обработки графики этим чипом не потребуется вносить существенные изменения в код игр, как это происходит с FSR, то игроки вправе рассчитывать на рост производительности и качества технологии масштабирования от AMD. В противном случае, сложно ожидать поддержки специального чипа от сторонних разработчиков игр. На консолях Xbox такой чип (пока!) отсутствует, да и в процессоры Ryzen массово не интегрирован.
В целом, консоль выглядит как добротный игровой ПК — коим она и фактически и является.
Сначала о самом девайсе
PS Portal предназначена лишь для одного — удалённого подключения к PS5, что даёт возможность переходить от игр на стационарной консоли к портативной. Девайс позволяет запускать тайтлы, которые установлены на PS5.
Выглядит PlayStation Portal неплохо, как и большинство устройств японской компании. В чём в чём, а в дизайне японцы разбираются. Контроллер практически такой же, как и DualSense, его половинки размещаются с обеих сторон консоли. Поддерживается как тактильная обратная связь, так и адаптивные триггеры. Это сделано для более глубокого погружения в геймплей.
Кроме того, консоль умеет воспроизводить видео и фотографии, но для этого требуется постоянное подключение к Wi-Fi. К сожалению, PlayStation Portal несовместима с облачными играми Sony для PS5, это существенный недостаток новинки. Ещё одна странная вещь — отсутствие Bluetooth, т. е. большое количество аксессуаров, включая Bluetooth-наушники, несовместимо с консолью.
