Notes

  • Every TV series produced by DC Studios was only produced by them from 2022 onward.
  • A number of films initially announced by DC Studios to be set in the DC Extended Universe were cancelled or reworked into other projects over the years, including Harley Quinn vs. The Joker, The Trench, The New Gods, Wonder Twins, Green Lantern Corps, and sequels to Man of Steel and Black Adam.
  • Gunn has stated that DC Studios will produce video games that will tie into the DC Universe, but none have been announced.
  • Gunn and Safran have assembled several writers to work on DCU projects, including Drew Goddard, Jeremy Slater, Christina Hodson, Tom King, Christal Henry, Jeremy Carver, Ana Nogueira, and Matt Reeves, all led by Gunn.

History

Early History

DC Studios was founded through Warner Bros. under the name DC Films in 2016 by Geoff Johns and Jon Berg to attempt to structure the DC Extended Universe, which had been struggling critically and financially. Their first produced film, Suicide Squad, was heavily reshot and edited down in an attempt to make it less grim and more lighthearted, resulting in a film that was almost universally hated by audiences and critics. Eventually, Walter Hamada became president of the studio, and began editing down other films like Justice League, and releasing films across the DCEU that were hit and miss with critics. Many complained were inconsistent in style and tone from one another and didn’t seem to connect much.

Even after releasing director Zack Snyder’s original version of Justice League in 2021, DC Films still lacked direction and consistency in their films, even beginning to produce content outside of the main DCEU such as Joker and The Batman, which proved widely successful, arguably more so than their DCEU projects. They even cancelled the film Batgirl to get money from a tax write-off, despite the film being in post-production.

Beginning of the DCU

DC Studios creative head James Gunn

Eventually in late 2022, James Gunn and Peter Safran were named co-CEOs of DC Films, now renamed DC Studios, and set about restructuring the DCEU, eventually deciding to simply reboot it into the DC Universe, a new world with some projects from the DCEU integrated into the timeline.

Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters

The first wave of projects in this new franchise is entitled «Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters», and will begin with the upcoming TV series Creature Commandos and upcoming film Superman: Legacy. Gunn and Safran’s plan for this universe will span 8 to 10 years covering as much of DC lore as they can in that time through film and television. Meanwhile, all projects not set in the main DCU will be labelled as «DC Elseworlds», including projects set in the world of The Batman and animated films set in the Tomorrowverse.

Upcoming New DC Movies

The Batman (Warner Bros.)

Now that James Gunn and Peter Safran are building out a new slate of DC movies, the interconnected DCEU is about to get even more complicated, with a handful of films that were greenlit under the previous regime still rolling out in 2023 and Gunn and Safran launching their new vision for the DCU — titled “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.”

All of this to say, here’s a list of the DC movies currently in the works that are set for release:

  • Joker: Folie a Deux – Oct. 4, 2024
  • Superman: Legacy – July 11, 2025
  • The Batman II – Oct. 3, 2025

DC Movies in Chronological Order

Warner Bros.

The DC Extended Universe

When trying to watch the DC movies in chronological order, most people are talking about the interconnected universe of films that kicked off with Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot “Man of Steel.” From then on, a universe was constructed in which characters crossed over from one film to the next, only to be somewhat abandoned after the release of “Justice League.”

The theatrical cut of “Justice League” was finished off by Joss Whedon after Snyder left during post-production and after hefty reshoots that largely abandon teases for future DC films. “Zack Snyder’s Justice League,” meanwhile, is Snyder’s epic four-hour version of the story that teases grand DCEU plans that will not be coming to fruition following his departure.

After either version of “Justice League,” you’ll find DC connectivity is more sparse.

“Black Adam” takes place after the events of “The Suicide Squad,” “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” takes place after “Black Adam” and the multiverse-traversing “The Flash” takes place all over the place — but is chronologically set around the same time as “Shazam! Fury of the Gods.”

“Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom,” the final film in the DCEU, ostensibly takes place furthest in the timeline but includes few connections to the overall continuity.
