History

Announcement and Crowdfunding

On January 16th, 2021, director Gavin J. Konop posted a video to YouTube announcing Spider-Man: Lotus and its IndieGoGo campaign (shown below). In the video, Konop says the film is inspired by the 1984 story from The Amazing Spider-Man comics «The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man.» In the comic, Spider-Man visits a kid with leukemia, Tim Harrison, who is Spider-Man’s biggest fan. Konop says the film is about «how we encounter loss, how we deal with it and how we grow from it.» The video gained over 121,000 views in a year. The IndieGoGo campaign surpassed its goal of $20,000 US, raising over $30,000 US by February 28th, 2021. As of June 2022, the film has raised over $112,000 US.

Production

Konop posted frequent updates about the project and its production over the following months. On March 25th, 2021, he posted a video to YouTube discussing the film’s cast (shown below, left). On June 9th he posted a video to YouTube showcasing the film’s theme song, gaining over 140,000 views in a year (shown below, right).

On July 16th, Konop posted a teaser for Spider-Man: Lotus to YouTube, gaining over 681,000 views in 11 months (shown below).

On October 28th, Konop posted a full trailer for the movie to YouTube, gaining over 1.7 million views in eight months (shown below). The trailer teases a release date of Summer 2022.

Spider-Man: Lotus provides examples of the following tropes:

• Adaptational Jerkass: While Peter Parker didn’t take Gwen’s death well in the comics, this version of Peter Parker is much, much worse in how he handles it: beyond lashing out at his friends like in the comics, he walks away from a terminally ill child after throwing a grief-induced fit at one point and uses several goons as human shields when fighting the Shocker, both of which are things canon Peter Parker, even at his lowest points, would never do.
• Author Tract: Peter’s «The Reason You Suck» Speech towards MJ, basically calling her a selfish narcissist, feels less like something Peter would say, and more like a hate-post from a Gwen Stacy fan.
• I Let Gwen Stacy Die: The Movie. Peter spends basically the entire plot mourning Gwen Stacy’s death and blaming himself for it.
• Littlest Cancer Patient: Tim, the little boy who idolizes Spider-Man and wants nothing more than to meet him in person one time before he dies. Though downplayed in that his exact diagnosis is never told to the viewer and he actually looks pretty healthy for a child diagnosed with «terminally ill».
• Moody Trailer Cover Song: Will Cookson’s Alone in the Dark is swapped out halfway through the trailer for an instrumental, orchestral cover which incorporates the main theme at the tail end.
• Mythology Gag:
  • The Spider-Man costume in this film is a near-perfect recreation of the 60s-era Lee-Ditko suit, swapping out the black highlights for dark blue fabric.
  • One of the Daily Bugle issues taped to Tim’s wall has the headline «Spider-Man No More?» in reference to the three-issue arc that Spider-Man 2 partially adapted.
• «The Reason You Suck» Speech:
  • Peter gives an extremely caustic one to Mary-Jane when she attempts to ask him out to a party, accusing her of being vapid and shallow and trying to make the aftermath of Gwen’s death all about herself. He even goes so far as to yell at her that she never cared about Gwen or him.
  • The Green Goblin gives one to Peter as Spider-Man in a guilt-induced nightmare, telling him that Gwen’s death was his fault and that he brings death everywhere he goes.
• With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility: In his «checking in» tape with the late Gwen, Peter states that he isn’t Spider-Man because he wants to be; he is Spider-Man because he feels like he has to be.
• Wham Line: Much like No Way Home, the Green Goblin’s involvement is revealed by having him let out a malicious cackle in the final trailer.
• What the Hell, Hero?: Ms. Harrison gives Spider-Man an earful when he admits to basically crushing her terminally ill son’s ideal image of his hero simply because Peter thought the kid «needed to hear» that Spider-Man isn’t as perfect as he thinks. Ms. Harrison basically tells Peter to get his act together and that this visit isn’t about him and his baggage, it’s about her son and granting him his life-long wish before he passes away. It’s this and later Tim showing him how much Spider-Man has meant to him and the thousands of lives he saved that finally gets Peter out of his slump.

How is ‘Spider-Man: Lotus’ legal?

Fan-made films such as ‘Spider-Man: Lotus’ are essentially illegal, but they are crowdfunded and labeled as not-for-profit, so studios shy away from taking legal action. The only legal route is for the creators to seek approval from the studios such as Marvel and Sony.

Generally, fan movies are seen as harmless because the creators don’t make money from them, and the quality is rarely anything comparable to the studio versions. Since they are crowdfunded and made by fans, studios are generally reluctant to pursue legal action because suing your fans is bad for business.

In the case of ‘Spider-Man: Lotus,’ it is unclear if Gavin Konop sought the legal approval of Marvel and Disney. His crowdfunding campaign raised over $100,000 for the production. The trailer also had over 2.5 million views and received the approval of some previous Spider-Man creators and directors, including Jon Watts.

However, the approval came before the details of Konop and Wayne’s racist conversations were leaked online. The movie received a huge backlash when the controversial chats were released. Since the negative impact of the backlash affects the superhero directly, Marvel could be forced to intervene and pull it down.

Both ‘Superman: Solar’ and ‘Spider-Man: Lotus’ have become symbols of distortion of some of the most liked superhero characters in DC and Marvel. Being labeled as not-for-profit and crowdfunded could, therefore, not be a good enough excuse for the studios to refrain from pursuing legal action and pulling them down because these movies don’t even have the blessings of the fans.

Warden Wayne Leaked Messages

On June 18th, 2022, user @Thnnnder posted several screenshots showing Warden Wayne, the actor playing Spider-Man, using the N-word over DM, writing, «Is this your Spider-Man?? Warden Wayne is so gross, hoping Lotus recasts him,» gaining over 850 likes and 400 retweets in three days (shown below).

On the same day, Wayne apologized for his offensive remarks in a tweet, gaining over 4,800 likes and 330 retweets in three days (shown below). In the statement, he claims he used to use the word in high school as a joke but is now «ashamed» of it. He writes that he was «raised in a homeschool conservative environment in a small town in Arkansas» and added that his «ideas of right and wrong were skewed.» He also claims he’s grown and changed over the years as his bubble expanded.

On June 19th, Konop posted a statement to Twitter about Warden Wayne, writing that he was «disgusted» by the messages. He states that Wayne was open with him about his former ignorance in the past and also added that the film will still be released, writing, «These people have put themselves on the line to achieve the vision that I have set forth, and they don’t deserve to have their work diminished because of one person’s actions.» He then apologizes for the statements from Wayne.

Gavin J. Konop Leaked Messages

On June 20th, 2022, Twitter user @Berkmanboom posted, «Since Warden Wayne has been exposed, I think it’s a better time than ever to expose Gjkcentral aka Gavin Konop,» sharing several screenshots in which Konop purportedly writes the N-word and uses the contentious term «retard» (shown below). @Berkmanboom posted several other allegedly leaked tweets and messages showing similar behavior throughout the day.

On the same day, Konop then posted a tweet in response to the accusations, claiming some of the messages are photoshopped, some are «screenshots of things that old admins had sent from my account several years ago» and some are «old messages that do not need to be addressed.» In his response, he writes, «Be back with an in-depth response to it all, but for right now, I’m taking a step back from social media.»

In a Twitter post from the same day, the leaker @berkmanboom posted a statement explaining who he is. He writes that he is 15 and met Konop in 2017 and looked up to him. The two bonded over Spider-Man and Konop promised to help @berkmanboom make a Spider-Man film, but then started to distance himself from him. He writes that he didn’t understand how «toxic» Konop was at the time and wanted to expose him before, but was too scared.

Konop was also criticized by some for not adequately paying the film’s storyboard artists and purportedly treating the film’s VFX artists poorly. In one leaked DM posted to Twitter, Konop writes, «honestly I don’t understand why people were so upset over me not paying the storyboard artists.» On June 20th, Twitter user @low_res_jpg, who claims to have worked on the VFX team, described how the team eventually quit due to several problems with Konop (shown below).

Script and Footage Leaks

At the time of the controversy, script pages and footage from the film were also leaked online. On June 20th, 2022, Twitter user @hurglemorn leaked the first three pages of the script, gaining over 130 likes in a day.

Spider-Man: Lotus In Theaters

On August 6th, 2023, the movie received an official theater release in the United Kingdom. Twitter user @jayjjalen posted a picture of Spider-Man: Lotus actor Warden Wayne on the red carpet for the movie premiere (shown below), which garnered over 40,000 likes and 1,100 retweets in a day.

Online, the movie premiere became a trending topic on Twitter, with users commenting on the controversies surrounding actor Warden Wayne and the movie director Gavin J. Konop. For example, on August 6th, Twitter user @CastleDead posted a clip mocking the film’s fans (shown below), which received roughly 129,000 views and 5,100 likes in a day.

On the same day, Twitter user @TheRealTCU posted a video showing the inside audience of the movie premiere (shown below), which received over 4.8 million views and 3.700 likes in a day.

The feature-length Indie movie follows Peter Parker as he struggles with his alter ego, whom he blames for the death of his girlfriend Gwen Stacy. His inner struggles cause him to turn hostile to those around him and become insensitive even to those he cares about, including his friends.

Peter spends most of his time in the movie grieving his dead girlfriend as he hangs up his Spider-Man suit, opting instead to let the world burn. However, when a terminally ill boy requests to meet Spider-Man as his dying wish, Peter has a change of heart.

Giving the child his life’s wish transforms Peter as it makes him realize that losing his girlfriend doesn’t have to mean the end of the world. Peter starts to repair his relationships with his friends, encouraged by a parting message left for him on a flash drive by his dead girlfriend.

The movie ends with the friends back on good terms and having a party. Although Peter has repaired relationships, he has abandoned his alter ego for most of the movie when he hears police sirens while on his way to the party, he decides to save the world again.

The movie’s adherence to the character’s storyline in the comics was generally great, as well as the camera work and cinematography. VFX is also good, considering the fact that it is a homemade movie. However, the actors could have used more emotion, and the plot needed more action and speed.

Why is ‘Spider-Man: Lotus’ so controversial?

A Twitter user named @Thnnnder released a series of chats with racial slurs and abusive language on June 19, 2022, purportedly made by the ‘Spiderman: Lotus’ lead actor and co-writer Warden Wayne. Despite Wayne’s lengthy apology, blaming his wayward ways on his conservative upbringing and being homeschooled, many people condemned his actions and called for the role to be recast.

The movie’s creator, Gavin Konop, also wrote a lengthy statement defending the actor and calling for restraint. However, a short time later, Konop’s own dirty laundry on Twitter through screenshots of chats just as despicable as those made by his choice of lead actor. Konop released a video on his YouTube Channel addressing and apologizing for his behavior, but the movie’s reputation was already damaged.

Things went from bad to worse when the team of VFX artists hired for the project quit en masse. One team accused the creators of mistreating and underpaying them while another refused to be associated with the anti-Spider-Man-like sentiments used by Gavin Konop and his cowriter/lead actor.

Konop’s close links to Andrew List, who created ‘Superman: Solar,’ another movie linked to extreme right-wing views, essentially sealed ‘Spider-Man: Lotus’s’ fate. ‘Superman: Solar’s’ writer and directors were similarly linked to racist content, leading to fans dabbing both movies as the Racist Cinematic Universe.
